Oldest weapons ever discovered in North America uncovered in Texas

Ancient tools that may give historians a glimpse into America's history were recently discovered just feet below the surface in Texas. Researchers with Texas A&M University made the stunning discovery during a dig at the Debra L. Friedkin site, located just 40 miles northwest of Austin. Archaeologists have been searching for artifacts at the site near Buttermilk Creek for more than a decade — but this may be their most important find yet.

Michael Waters, professor of anthropology and director of the Center for the Study of the First Americans at Texas A&M, and staff from Baylor University and the University of Texas described the various ancient items they found in a study published in the latest issue of Science Advances. The team reveals they found 3 to 4-inch weapons, including spear points made of chert, under sediment they believe to be at least 15,500 years old.

As a knapper I might see things a little different than standard thinking. I’m not sure why some assume that certain cultures only made one style of point. I’ve worked material that is almost impossible to flute so instead make another style point, both being used for the same purpose. Here in west TX we see allot of Plainview, Yuma style points but from time to time fluted points are found. I really like the Hell Gap style point because it’s a great representation of a transition maybe not from a certain period but simply because of the material. With lets say gem quality chert I have a pretty good success ration with fluting points. Lower that quality of material and that ratio goes way down. So instead of coming from the end to thin the point down I have to come in from the sides creating a completely different style point. I know I’m not doing a good job of explaining myself here but I guess I’m trying to say that for one culture to make several style points just doesn’t sound unreasonable to me. The Clovis and the Solutreans made a wide variety of points and tools.

Holy cow... I was not aware that there were any “Acknowledged and accepted” Clovis finds in Europe!

Seriously? Would you happen to have any resources I can add to my resource bank?

So I would not be able to rightfully answer your curiosity (and now mine!) without doing some homework on this.

Absolutely... I have done a little playing at Knapping and understand completely what you are explaining with all this. And then there is the difference between stone that works better after heat treating and stone that will work well without heat treating. It all boils down to what is available and how it will work and shape has to be adapted to best use what is available.

Unfortunately, yes I have.

Here's one of the Laurel Leaf Solutrean style points, it's about 6 inches in length and I tried to keep the overshot style percussion. All of my work is done with stone, bone and antler. Solutrean photo DSCN1774_zpsugo8ugba.jpg

I'm watching the series on amazon right now. The man just to the left is Deaf Smith. The portrayals seem to jive well with what I have read.

Very nice work! I got confused because the image was taken out in the field. I am elated to see knappers who try to use primitive tools to knap with. Tell you what... If I understood you correctly... it is not at all easy to do overshot flakes by percussion like you did with that solutrean point.

I’m just glad it wasn’t California, my home state. They would have wanted to require the archeologist to get a Concealed Weapon Permit, have the ancient weapon banned near schools and government buildings, restrict the right to carry or display in public. etc.

I want to move to Texas, but only if Ted Cruz wins

No, Fauxcahontas’ people migrated from Mongolia and oppressed these people, the Anasazi who were there before them.
