"I want my 'eGray' TV!" - FReeper help needed to promote Beverly Hilton "DumpDAVIS" FReep at noon
New strategy for "DumpDAVIS" FReeps: multiple "eGray in a garbage can" MOBILE STRIKE FORCE teams ^ | September 17, 2002 | RonDog

Posted on 09/17/2002 5:36:24 AM PDT by RonDog

"Dump DAVIS" FReep ALERT!!!

If you live in California, and can get away at noon.
we need your BODY
at the Beverly Hilton hotel.
(from noon to 2 pm - TODAY!!)

If you live somewhere else, or if you cannot be there in person,
we need your MOUTH.
(on the telephone)

We have some GREAT things planned for this FReep.

The TV cameras and the wire service photographers are going to LOVE what we do!
(see the rest of this thread)

But now we need to make sure that they show up!

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to create a BUZZ!!
Please CALL the local television stations in Los Angeles, southern California news radio hotlines, the national wire services, talk show hosts - ANYBODY and EVERYBODY - right now!!!
Your pitch should go something like THIS:
YOU: "Did you know that Bill Simon is going to debate that guy from the Green Party at the Beverly Hilton this afternoon?"
Them: "Yeah, we heard about it."

YOU: "Did you hear what the anti-Gray Davis protesters are doing - from noon to 2pm - outside the hotel?"
Them: "No. What are they doing?"

YOU: "They have a 'Gray Davis' impersonator - a big guy dressed up like a male prostitute.
You know, with fishnet stockings, and garter belts stuffed with dollar bills?
Them: "Yeah?"

YOU: "Yeah. And he has this REALLY big sign that says, "Will work... for BRIBES!"
Them: "Really?"

YOU: "Yes, and there's MORE!
Something about that new website that is a parody of eBay.
And, they have a bunch of L.A. Dodger signs that say, "Gray Davis: DEBATE Dodger" - I guess that's because Gray Davis was invited to this debate, but he didn't show up."
Them: "Is that it?"

YOU: "Yeah, I guess so.
Oh, except for one more thing.
I understand that Beverly White from NBC4 is going to be there for some kind of Awards ceremony, so she's probably out there interviewing these right-wing fanatics right now.
You probably ought to get a camera crew out there, too.
At LEAST, you ought to cover the debate, right?"

That's it.

Please repeat this about a dozen times - between now and noon California time. (3 pm East coast time)

We need to get this image EVERYWHERE!

California WILL "Dump DAVIS!" - with your help.

Thank you, RonDog

And what will **I** be doing while you are "dialing and smiling? You shall see... SOON!

Here is the press release that I e-mailed EVERYWHERE:
(for release on TUESDAY, September 17, 2002)
"eGray Hooker" at the Beverly Hilton
.......... The Beverly Hilton hotel will be the scene today for the first gubernatorial debate (at 2 pm) between the Republican Party challenger Bill Simon and Green Party candidate Peter Camejo.

.......... Since California governor Gray Davis has announced that he will NOT participate in any debate which also includes the feisty Latino activist, members of the conservative news forum www.FreeRepublic.com will be conducting "street theater" outside the hotel to protest Gray Davis by bringing the governor’s "evil twin" – a character they call the "eGray Hooker."

.......... Dressed in a Halloween costume of the transvestite star of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Frank N. Furter, and wearing a mask of the cartoon character "Beavis" (of "Beavis and Butthead"), this "eGray Hooker" will carry a sign, "Will Work for… BRIBE$!"

.......... Controversy surrounding Davis’s alleged "Pay for Play" policy of allowing campaign contributions to directly influence his major decisions has intensified with the recent launch of a parody of the well-known auction site eBay.com, called www.eGray.org.

.......... Despite complaints from eBay, the Simon camp refuses to take down their wildly popular spoof, citing the court decision which allowed former presidential candidate Ralph Nader to promote a similar parody using MasterCard’s "Priceless" ads.

.......... Information about today’s debate can be found at the website of the California Green Party, www.cagreens.org

"The

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Who ARE you guys?
A. Just a group of concerned citizens who are SICK and TIRED of seeing our state run by a crooked politician who is "for sale to the highest bidder."

Q. Are you employed by Bill Simon, or his campaign staff?
A. No. We are independent volunteers who act without his consent.

Q. Why does the "eGray Hooker" wear a "Beavis" mask?
A. We couldn’t find a "Gray Davis" mask, and "Butthead" is a brunette.

Q. Why doesn’t the REAL eBay force you to stop copying their logo?
A. Because they CANNOT. What we do is protected political speech, as in the case of MasterCard vs Ralph Nader, where he WON the use for parody.

Q. Where can I learn more?
A. The BEST place to start is on the website, www.eGray.org

Q. Did Free Republic INVENT the "eGray" website?
A. No. Members of the conservative news forum www.FreeRepublic.com just FOUND it, and helped to POPULARIZE this concept - which crystallizes
what many voters feel in their hearts and minds is wrong with Gray Davis.

Please help us "Dump DAVIS!"
Vote for Bill SIMON on November 5!

I plan to arrive at 11:30 am.
The debate between Bill Simon and Green Party candidate Peter Camejo starts at 2 pm, so that will be the END of the official FReep.
(Unless anyone wants to stay for the debate itself, from 2 pm to 3:30 pm. I will.)

Parking is expensive ($6/hr) but SAFE, in a covered, guarded facilities - at either the Hilton or the adjacent Robinsons/MAY department store paking lots.

I have checked out the venue, and suggest that we meet on the NORTH side of Wilshire, in a small park on either side of the intersection of Wilshire with Trenton Drive.

Heard you on the Hugh Hewitt show yesterday...keep up the good work. I'm getting out the Simon info in many ways and will continue working hard. Can't help on Monday but will in the future. The Davis rent-a-mob is everywhere so your efforts are great. One question: Did ONE newspaper print anything regardng the dismissal of Simon's lawsuit? Shouldn't we try to figure out a way to bombard the LATimes in mass?

Davis or no, first debate will be relevant

Mercury News

The first gubernatorial debate of the season will take place this afternoon, but it won't be the usual panel of what the public gently derides as ``talking heads'' from big newspapers and television stations.

It'll be editors from ethnic media publications and newscasts who are gathering at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, 3,000 strong, for the New California Media EXPO, one of the largest news media conferences that you'll see on this coast.

They're not as interested in the business fraud lawsuits that dogged Bill Simon or strong-arm campaign fundraising or some of the other headlines that we've seen.

They want to know how their readers' and audiences' everyday lives will be affected by the election of a Bill Simon or a Gray Davis or a Peter Camejo. They want to know about economic betterment of the state, affordable health care and good schools. They want to know where the candidates stand on issues involving trade with China or Mexico. About racial profiling, immigration and foreign student visas. In short, they want to know about the same things all Californians are interested in -- and then some.

Not into `political battles'

``We're not into the political battles over somebody's taxes . . . and who said what and what the ads mean,'' said Pilar Marrero, political editor of La Opinión, a Spanish-language paper that reaches half a million people. ``Most people don't care about the election because the information they get is not relevant to them.''

The debate opens the New California Media EXPO and Awards, a San Francisco-based organization, and is designed to broaden political discussion among the state's many ethnic communities through the media that serve them. New California Media (NCM) will present awards to outstanding work produced in publications serving 11 different communities, no fewer than eight of them coming from the Bay Area. (My colleague, Viet Mercury photographer Thu Hoang Ly, was runner-up for best photo essay.)

``We have the same dreams, the same fears, the same objectives in life,'' said W. Bruno Kalifa, editor-in-chief of An-Nahar and Eterna publishing, an Arabic-English weekly that takes its name from a well-respected newspaper in Lebanon. ``But I'm also going to talk about Hollywood, immigration, and profiling.''

As part of the four-person panel grilling the candidates, Dr. William Hanford Lee, publisher of the Sacramento Observer, thinks the issues of affordable housing and better access to health care resonate particularly with his audience but also to the broader California public.

It's too bad Gray Davis won't be there alongside Simon and Camejo.

Two debates scheduled

The only debate scheduled so far that Davis had definitely committed to is Oct. 7 in Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Times. Davis has tentatively agreed to one other, by Univision, the Spanish-language network. That's all Davis says he'll agree to because, after all, he's a busy, working governor with a state to run and bills to sign, said campaign strategist Garry South.

``We get dozens upon dozens of debate invitations; it's the governor's prerogative to accept them or not.''

For historical context, South said, Republican Gov. George Deukmejian allowed Democratic challenger Tom Bradley ``exactly no debates'' in 1986. Incumbent Republican Gov. Pete Wilson allowed Kathleen Brown one debate in 1994. There were six debates in 1996 throughout the open primary and the general election.

OK, OK, OK. Got it. But in many ways, it's Davis' loss.

We'll miss it live, but C-Span will be taping today, the CBS affiliate in Los Angeles is assigning a political analyst, and the ``NewsHour with Jim Lehrer'' has requested tape, said Sonny Le, from NCM. Davis can catch up.

``In this forum we have the opportunity to ask questions for Californians,'' said Lee. ``Emerging Californians.''
