Anti-war set given anti-Bush pep talk

CEDAR GROVE - More than three weeks have passed since the fall of Iraq, and the 400 peace activists who gathered at the Friar Tuck Inn on Sunday have the same concern as President Bush:

Where are Saddam Hussein's weapons of mass destruction?

The answer, as provided by Scott Ritter, a former chief weapons inspector in Iraq for the United Nations, is that there are none to be found - now, nor before the United States launched its invasion in March.

"A great lie has been told," Ritter said to the audience at NJ Peace Action's annual dinner. "There were no weapons of mass destruction, and Iraq never posed any threat."

To a large extent, Ritter was preaching to the converted on Sunday, as the audience, mostly filled with gray-haired activists, peppered his comments with applause. But as a Marine Corps veteran of the Persian Gulf war and the man responsible for ensuring that Iraq's biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons capabilities were destroyed, Ritter brought with him a measure of credibility.

Ritter said U.N. inspectors verified that 95 percent of Hussein's capability to produce biological, chemical, and nuclear weapons had been eliminated by 1998, the year inspectors left the country. He added that the United States had already destroyed his bomb-making facilities by then, and that it would be impossible for him to rebuild without the United States knowing about it.

Impeachment raised

"Inspections worked," Ritter said. "The fact is that the United Nations disarmed Iraq. The war was never about getting rid of weapons of mass destruction. It was about getting rid of Saddam Hussein."

As such, Ritter accused Bush of lying to Congress and said he should be impeached. Ritter said Bush violated the Constitution by failing to abide by the U.N. charter, which justifies going to war only in self-defense or if the U.N. Security Council gives its approval.

"He lied to send us to war," Ritter said. "His lie caused the death of over 130 American soldiers and thousands of Iraqis. He is a murderer."

Bush briefly met with reporters at his ranch in Texas on Saturday and said he is confident weapons of mass destruction will be found.

"Iraq is the size of the state of California," Bush said. "It's got tunnels, caves, all kinds of complexes. We'll find them, and it's just going to be a matter of time before we do so."

The whereabouts of Hussein and weapons of mass destruction have provided the peace movement a rallying cry as it prepares for Bush's expected reelection bid in 2004.

"Peace groups are moving from a negative position to a positive position," said Stuart Shaw of Fair Lawn. Shaw said that the movement has gone from being simply anti-war to being pro-democracy.

"We're going to focus on holding the president accountable for this war," Shaw said. "If there were any weapons of mass destruction, then show us the evidence."

Bakir Altai, an Iraqi emigrant who is a doctor in Wayne, said that Iraqis understand the concept of democracy, and will not support any government that appears to be handpicked by the United States.

"I think the best thing that could happen is for the United States to pull out and let the United Nations take the lead," Altai said. "If not, there will be more chaos and more trouble."

Notice how this Commie is equating the Constitution with the UN Charter, it's scary to think that people are actually talking like that and how it appears in the Newspapers which "most people" (Including Teachers, students and many politicians) think the written word in these liberal rags is the truth.

 

Where on earth is it written that the President of the USA must abide by the UN Charter? There is NO mention about the Stain Maker starting a war in Bosnia with no permission from any entity nor does he decry Clinton for lobbing a few bombs in Iraq with no provocation just before his impeachment proceedings.

 

Bakir Altai, the Iraqi physician from new Jersey is sadly mistaken when he said "I think the best thing that could happen is for the United States to pull out and let the United Nations take the lead" I guess he never heard of Katanga, The Congo and South Africa where the Communist UN terrorized and set fire to those who opposed the "new" UN-Backed Government.
