The Vietnamese Cardinal interests me, as the Vietnamese have suffered great persecution since the arrival of the Catholic faith more than two to three centuries ago.

There is still a great battle going on with the Vietnamese government currently over the government seizing all Church property in Vietnam.

The short of it -- persecution helps one perfect their spiritual life (or at least it can!).

Just a question in this politically charged era we live in;

Can anything be done to or for the Catholic religion while there is no Pope?

I'm thinking about a recess type appointment or something

It just seems to me that some things that I might consider an immanent need isn't necesarilly so.

We rush to a crying baby that may have gas, but dote around when a nation or religion is leaderless.

Just wonderin'

In that case I predict that we're all going to have the opportunity ion the very near future to start perfecting our spiritual lives.

I understand that “All Roads Lead to Rome” but it does not mean that the cardinals must walk to Rome.

After all, they have known for a month that they would have to be at the Conclave.

Seems like they could have booked an airline flight in a more timely manner.

I think the Catholic Church has always moved at a pace of their own choosing...perhaps moved more by the power of the Holy Spirit, than of man. It's not that there aren't urgent needs within the Chuch, but there's nothing that important that outweighs the tradition of the conclave, and the selection of a new Pope.

I would also add that while I'm not naive enough to believe there aren't some politics involved, I believe the Church would say they are above that; picking a Pope is a spiritual exercise, not a democratic or political one.

I used the word 'politically' to reference the time we live in, not to infer politics was involved with the selection of a Pope.

Like the previous poster said, they've known a long time (and in MY opinion, it was a hell of a lot longer than a month), and arrangements could have been made earlier.

We all know politics moves at a snails pace so unless the crisis of a nation (or a church hierarchy) is artificial, action should be immediate.

Benghazi is an excellent example of an immediate need gone unanswered, while the passing of zero care is an excellent example of a casual situation termed immediate and in need of crisis management.

My question to this thread is ... is there anything that could be detrimental to the Catholic church while Pope-less ?

Nope. The Church is protected by the Holy Spirit. Popes come and go, but the Holy Spirit protects His Church

One thing that is disconcerting from the Bible is the "Angel of Wormwood" in the book of Revelation (or book of Apocalypse).

In the Ukrainian language wormwood literally means "chernobyl".

That was the place where a number reactor burned down, spreading radiation for hundreds of miles around that spot. [This nuclear reactor was located in the Ukraine.]

Also of interest is that there was not a word for nuclear radiation at the time of Jesus Christ and the Twelve Apostles.

So it is possible that that Angel of Wormwood refers to nuclear fallout/radiation. The book of Revelation refers to streams, rivers and lakes being contaminated by wormwood. [That does not make sense -- that a tree/plant would contaminate rivers/streasm/lakes.]
