I think human inclination is to close ranks around and insider during a time when the Church is facing growing criticism.
Time will tell.

As for the names being floated right now as potential candidates for the next Pope, the general feeling among Vatican analysts is that these are just “trial balloons” and that the curiali and shepherds from outside the Curia will go with someone not yet in the limelight.

Just make it Obama. He thinks that he is infallible already./sarc

I would not be surprised if an “outsider” is chosen in order to clean up the curia as well as take on a increasing attacks from the rest of the world.
