President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

Many, many people who have lost homes and sources of employment are going to be turning to the government for temporary support. For those who can not reestablish a source of income, can they be offered work in place of the thousands of illegal migrant workers? Rather than just warehousing people in the Astrodome, etc. why not employ them helping with jobs that are being filled by illegals?

The nurses and Dr.s in NO hospitals need to be rescued soon. A Dr. on the radio said she and the staff are afraid for their lives. The thugs have looted the pharmacy and kitchen at the hospital. They have no water or food, patients are dying. She said they were told it would be 5-7 days before they would be rescued...Gangs with big weapons shot up their cars as they watched from the hospital, powerless to stop them. They stayed behind to help and now they have lost their vehicles and may lose their lives if not rescued soon....

My God. These people are animals. They're killing everyone who is there to help them! All I can do is to pray for their safety : (

Ever single pump failed. Every single one.

From what I heard, they could only pump a certain height (e.g. 70 inches) so once the lake filled up 5 feet above normal they were useless whether running or not.

FedEx has a lot of emergency equipment sitting at their Memphis hub to do pickups and deliveries with. Last I looked, they even had a tow plane and glider, used for deliveries when they couldn't get a truck in in time.

And I think the MSM is noting the
"slow response" of FEMA, compared with the quick response last year.

And last year there was quick response to the hurricanes by FEMA.

IMHO, neither FEMA, the Gov or LA, the Mayor of NO, and any number of other folks had any plan for a "worst case scenario" in NO, even though the possibility has been discussed for decades.

How about pa systems on big trucks? NOLO didn't have even one of those but they make nice floats there for the mardi gras. A PA speaker on a big truck would have been helpful.
