President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

"Per the scanners, Bulldog Six seems to think that the SD is under control now and they will begin evacuations again soon. By the way, for those that don't know, Six is usually the CO of that unit.

Sometimes "Six" is the RTO (radio guy), and "Six Actual" is the CO.

Well, first, make sure your local government decides to get satellite phones. IMHO, one of the main problems is lack of communication...nobody knows what anybody else is doing.

thank you again for your local updates.

On a good note - just received a FedEx package shipped yesterday from Jackson, Mississippi. Even the FedEx delivery guy was impressed to see the MS origin. Said he had heard FedEx moved all their trucks to safe locations prior to the storm.

An observation from the scanner - It's pretty obvious who the civilians are on this radio net... no radio discipline, no clues...

FEMA has suspended rescuse operations because it's dangerous for them to go out there.

If they'd just shoot to kill the thugs we wouldn't be dealing with the problems of going back in. PC-ness will be our undoing.

And, of course, just as MSM has been painfully slow to grasp the chaos and insanity for the last few days, they will also be way behind the curve in reporting the successes as the adults put things back under control.

I think it's probably just thugs shooting, but thugs do have a serious admiration thing going for Osama, AQ, etc. I remember a couple of very creepy Osama-exalting jackets on rap albums after 9/11 and even more recently.

Anyone watching the WH press conference, the blaming of GWB has begun!

Yes, President Bush is accused of not acting fast enough, even though it seems he was one of the first to declare an emergency before an incident happened.

Can't say I don't believe it.

Bears repeating:

And yes, the crime wave is spreading out of New Orleans. While it may seem trivial at first, I mentioned in an earlier post that someone broke into my car and stole my CD player and speakers during the early morning hours on Monday. However, as the days passed and I spoke to my landlord and other residents of Pineville, it has become apparent that the migration has brought a crime spree with it. The Pineville Civic Center at Kees Park is housing what has been described as a "rough crowd." My landlord does not believe it's a coincidence that the apartment complexes where the car stereos were boosted are not that far from that relief facility. And a concerted effort has been made to keep reports of these burglaries OUT of the local media, which I think is a disservice to everyone who is a potential target of these looters.

For anybody who is interested, I just talked to onyx and she has just spoken with Toby (gulfcoast6) and his family is fine; their house is still standing, but not habitable; they evidently went to a cinderblock church to ride out the storm.

True, but in today's unit organizations, increasingly there is no radio guy, as radios are much smaller now. Fewer units need to tote an RTO guy around.

From the current traffic, this seems to be the case - no radio guys.

Now they're asking about the security situation. McClellan told the reporterette ask that at the DHS briefing as they would have better info of operational matters. Now she's asking about federalizing the entire effort.

Next reporterette trying to justify looting shoes and food.

KATRINA: I called my US Congressman's staff just now. A bit defensive re: FEMA Director Mike Brown. A bit putting the blame on the people who didn't evacuate. Well, FEMA was too slow, Louisiana had a lousy plan compared to Florida and to Texas. I said all should have been READY the weekend before KATRINA. I was told that it was just a category 1 then. I said "we cannot make assumptions about cat ones any more." Further, stated that these were Americans on my tv who were starting to succumb to heat stroke, seniors especially. Was told that this would be sad no matter who it was, American or not.

I stated that we help everyone around the world and get there quickly. This was not fast enough IMO. It's not a democrat or GOP problem. It is a preparedness problem.

My heart goes out to the people who are stranded in NOLO.

If the Feds are touchy about FEMA, they must be getting a lot of calls. P.S. The people who are getting violent but don't have weapons are probably suffering from heatstroke and dehydration. They are being left on their roofs. Some of the violent outbursts can be due to exposure. Now, the guys with guns, they are thugs.
