President Bush: "We are dealing with one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history." Push has appropriated vast federal resources to assist with the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

78,000 people are currently in shelters. New Orleans evacuation continues. 10,000 additional National Guard troops have been called to service.

Hospitals are running low on supplies, and public health concerns include water borne disease, poor sanitation, food and drinking water contamination and shortages, mosquitoes, carbon monixide poisoning from electricity generators, lack of childcare, and the special needs of the elderly.

WWL just showed a heavily armed Marine Cobra gunship heading for NO...

Yeah, I think someone there is about to get a *really* nasty surprise.

Probably a quarter of a million will settle in Texas, many with family, most starting over.

Would be a good time for Gov. Perry or President Bush(or more likely Congress pushing him) to proclaim that as the situation has changed, the border must be closed to illegal immigrants. Document sweeps of construction companies. On the national level pass a law mandating that all reconstruction and relocation housing contracts bid out using fed funds for the next year must use 10, 20, 30%(whatever is practical) registered refugees. Gives those refugees a chance to earn income(any fit male under 40 or so can do construction, I've done it), instead of costlier welfare payments, and reduces rebuilding/relocation costs. Or maybe structure it as a bid bonus for each refugee hired. No sense in illegals doing this work, we're going to have plenty of able bodied male refugees. Obviously those or just rough ideas that may or may not be a realistic option, but something to think about.

Glad to hear you're okay. I know it is terribly frustrating watching all of the suffeing, but do you really think it's a good idea to drop food and water? I thought about this myself, but it seems to me people would get killed in the ensuing stampede or in fights over the food and water. I mean, the situation on the ground looks pretty volatile.

I blasted CNN - thanks for the link. I specifically noted the demonstrable hatred and bias led by Miles O'Brien and Jack Cafferty.

Once again, CNN is the most DISTRUSTED name in the news. And I told them so in exactly those words.

I think dropping water or food by air would be VERY dangerous. People would be killed in the stampede.

They are dying of thirst and starvation right now.

Yes--I posted on it a while back. He scoffed at Congress for coming back to vote on Terry Schiavo in one night, and then said it's taking them a week to get back to vote on funds for hurricane victims.

The loathing in his demeanor for this administration was palpable! Nothing biased in his reporting!!!

The news should be good. Ponchatoula is in Tangipahoa Parish. According to WWL-TV:

9:15 A.M. - Gordon Burgess, Tangipahoa President: Some electrical power throughout the parish…North Oaks Hospital is operating, part of Pontchatula is working, but Amite has no power…No loss of life due to the storm…Advises residents to stay out of the parish to allow all relief effort to go unimpeded...A curfew is established.

I believe she is talking about the Superdome situation before they came over...apparently her brother was briefed about what went on.

I can't imagine the same stuff going on at the astrodome.

Her e-mail was written campus-wide and written vaguely enough, I am not quite sure WHICH dome she was referring to that the rapes and murders occurred in. I believe she meant the Super Dome in NO. It is just that her brother is now trying to keep control at the Astrodome.

National Guard shoving water off the backs of trucks. They're just pushing it off without stopping, people don't even know it's there at first -- they drop it on the side in debris, there's no sign or distribution point -- people are scared to go near it at first, because the drop points are guarded by troops or federal agents with assault rifles who don't let people come near them, which scares people off. It is a mess. When people actually get to the water, they are in such a rush to get it that one family left their small child behind and forget about him until Sig carried him back to the family.

but she said that when they tried to get out, all flights were canceled due to weather so they were stuck in the Ritz.

She said that a little too quick, didn't she?

I'm betting she thought it was gonna turn.

She had all day Friday and Saturday and Sunday to find a way out.

YES, PEOPLE HAVE SUGGESTED THAT PEOPLE ARE RANDOMLY SHOT FOR "LOOTING" WITHOUT A TRIAL OR JURY - IN A STATE OF UTTER CONFUSION WHERE PEOPLES VERY SURVIVAL IS BEING THREATENED. YES, YOU NEED TO RE-READ THIS THREAD AND MANY OTHERS IF YOU HAVEN'T NOTICED THAT...

When martial law is declared (and it has been declared), normal civil right are suspended. You can be shot for looting.
