House Passes Public Expression Of Religion Act (Bill To Stop ACLU Tax Funding): 244 to 173
Stop The ACLU ^ | 26-Sep-06 | John Stephenson

Well, we are half way there! Now the legislation needs to pass the Senate. This will be more difficult to do, so we continue to need all of the support we can get. The roll call is in from the House and its not good news for the ACLU! The bill, H.R. 2679, would deny legal fees and out-of-pocket expenses to be taken from taxpayers and given put into the pockets of groups like the ACLU when they successfully sue against references to God and religion in public settings, has passed by a vote of 244-173! This is good news, but it isn't the end of the battle. The legislation still needs to pass the Senate and for that to happen we will need all the support we can get. Keep contacting your Senators and let them know you support it!

Americans United for Seperation of Church and State are quite upset!

The Rev. Barry W. Lynn, executive director of Americans United, said the House leadership is obsessed with playing to powerful Religious Right lobbying groups that have been pressing for the legislation.

In case someone has not already asked, why does the House have to pass legislation to ensure what is already guaranteed by our Constitution?

That ancient thing? The Constitution was sufficient back in the olden days but today it serves merely as a guideline; the Constitution is a living, breathing document that evolves with the passing of time to conform with the chic political correctness of the day.

The ACLU is only trying to help.

Well, it's plain on the face of it. If the ACLU is party to lawsuits or legislation prohibiting the free expression of religion they shall be overruled by our courts, and rightly so. They certainly should not enjoy the support of taxpayers by any means. This is a no brainer, except (apparently) for the House. And the Courts.

Really. I had no idea the ACLU was a taxpayer-funded organization. Let's pull the taxpayer plug on NPR while we're at it.

What did it for me, was the trouble that began when the ACLU-San Diego and a homosexual legal group demanded that the city kick the Scouts off the public park land they’ve occupied since World War II. The the San Diego City Council was strongarmed and announced it would pay the ACLU nearly $1 million to settle out of court and pledged to void the Scouts’ lease and stop defending them in court. The vote against the Scouts was taken behind closed doors and wasn’t announced until a month later. It was done in secret, because gay activists know that “in private, the money and the radical organizations can prevail, but in public they cannot.” Many of the gay and lesbian city council members argued in the days leading to the settlement vote that the city would jeopardize public funds if it defended the Scouts in a case “we’re ultimately going to lose.”

Elected officials succumbed to these scare tactics. But the city could end up paying much more in fines to the U.S. government and religious groups than it saved by appeasing the ACLU.

Therefore, any monies kept from the coffers of the ACLU are funds not perpetrated on the destruction of other moral institutions.

I really like your idea! We are told repeatedly in Proverbs that to rebuke a scoffer is folly, for he does not love wisdom, but to bless our enemies is righteousness, and what a blessing Christmas cards are - whether they have money in them or not! (;

Who's to say that the Dims will be around forever? In my opinion the once-great Democratic Party is committing suicide, through its behavior since the barking moonbats took over. If they're still around as a national party after 2010, it will be because some spineless Republicans allowed them to win, or otherwise threw them a line.

In Seminole County, Florida, where I lived until recently, the Dims are already a third party; since 1996 the typical local race has pitted a Republican against an Independent, or a Republican against a Libertarian.

Tennesseans-take note the chicken Ford didn't vote. He's a full fledged liberal socialist in mask.

I used to routinely get mad at the American Civil Liberties Union, whenever I heard about their ridiculous antics. In my area, for example, the ACLU's biggest accomplishment to date is the removal of a cross from a water tower! And I knew they weren't really defenders of liberty when they tried to have Walter Polovchak, a Ukrainian teenager, sent back to the Soviet Union. That was totally unexcusable, and Polovchak only got to stay here because his case dragged on until he turned 18. I changed my mind about them, though, after they spoke up in defense of Muammar el-Gaddafi, in the aftermath of the 1986 US bombing of Libya. Now I consider the ACLU the most perfect political barometer yet devised by man. If I don't know where I should stand on an issue, I look at which side the ACLU takes, and take the opposite side. It hasn't failed me yet.

They would have to actually get it passed. The ACLU has been abusing the taxpayer for years- it's time to rein them in.

Whatever the group, conservative or liberal, they should survive on their own merit.

You're free to contribute whatever you wish to their causes. I'm sure they all have "Donate Now" buttons somewhere on their web pages.

If their hands get slapped out of my back pocket and they wither away, then good riddance.
