Obama: ‘I’m Not Going to Take Your Guns Away’
Wall Street Journal ^ | September 5, 2008 | Christopher Cooper

The Obama campaign talks a lot about new ideas and expanding the political map, but in the swing state of Pennsylvania, which the campaign has focused on almost exclusively since the Democratic convention, old-school issues still rise to the fore.

The latest example came Friday during a small political event at SCHOTT North America Inc., a glass factory in Duryea, Pa., where even a hand-picked crowd threw Barack Obama a curve ball.

A woman in the crowd told Obama she had “heard a rumor” that he might be planning some sort of gun ban upon being elected president. Obama trotted out his standard policy stance, that he had a deep respect for the “traditions of gun ownership” but favored measures in big cities to keep guns out of the hands of “gang bangers and drug dealers’’ in big cities “who already have them and are shooting people.”

Good idea. I would add, “the man who married Mr. and Mrs. Obama and baptized their children”.

So if he plays politics to get those votes in Congress and makes some appointments to SCOTUS he will take your guns away.

Obama on small towns: cling to their guns, religion and their bias

You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them...And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.

And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

“Even if I want to take them away, I don’t have the votes in Congress,’’ he said. “This can’t be the reason not to vote for me. Can everyone hear me in the back? I see a couple of sportsmen back there. I’m not going to take away your guns.’’

If someone says they're not going to hurt you, they're going to hurt you. If someone says, "It's not about the money", it's about the money. If someone says, "you can trust me", you can't. When Obama says he's not going to take away our guns, he's gonna do it.

"... “If you’ve got a gun in your house, I’m not taking it,’’ Obama said. But the Illinois senator could still see skeptics in the crowd, particularly on the faces of several men at the back of the room.

So he tried again. “Even if I want to take them away, I don’t have the votes in Congress,’’ he said. “This can’t be the reason not to vote for me. Can everyone hear me in the back? I see a couple of sportsmen back there. I’m not going to take away your guns.’’

Just amazing. "This CAN'T be the reason not to vote for me!"

Totally obtuse. I really thought he was smarter than this. I don't think he's ever really seen the United States of America outside of Maui, South Chicago, and Washington DC.

He's touring the USA like an American with only one week of vacation tours Europe: Well, here's Belgium! Look at all the flowers. Is that a, er ah, a germanaranium, or whatever they call it? Hell, I dunno. Back in the car kids! We're late for Portugal!

I fear he'll win the Presidency, but I'm really starting to think he'll get his ass kicked worse than John Kerry in 2004.

just as Reverend Wright predicted he would, “saying what he has to to get elected.”

Well, the old racist Rev. Wright has known him longer than any of us...

Said he’s not going to take your guns away. Didn’t say he wouldn’t prevent you from buying any new ones though.

He specifically said he was going to take away AK-47s in his speech in Denver....it sounded ad libbed to me, because it didnt fit into anything else he was talking about at the time.

He didn't say anything about not taking away your bullets, either.

He’s hoping he can get all his buddies in congress this coming election.

We have to see that doesn’t happen.

I am starting to think he is going to turn out to be a bigger fizzle than that comet Kohoutek way back when.

It was a bust for sure, but not before Journey wrote a song about it.
