N.Y. Catholics: Dems Trying to Bankrupt Church
NewsMax.com ^ | February 28, 2009 | Richard Lawrence Poe

Democrats have declared war on the Catholic Church, with new laws that threaten to bankrupt Catholic schools, hospitals, charities and parishes. Thus far, the worst attacks have come in New York.

“We’ve taken a lot of hits this year,” Dennis Poust, spokesman for the New York State Catholic Conference, tells Newsmax. “Outside the government, the Catholic Church is the largest provider of health, human services and education in [New York]. But some legislators are so driven by malice that they’re willing to see our charities and schools go under.”

I don't think the Dems are doing this to punish Catholics for their votes. As you note, most Catholics voted Dem (so say the exit polls, at any rate).

Rather, I think they are doing this, at least partly, because Catholic schools, hospitals and charities provide a private alternative to government services. Therefore they must be eliminated.

From the link:

“The Empire State’s Democrats are attacking on three fronts.

A proposal to require all hospitals to perform abortions, or lose their state license would put Catholic hospitals out of business.”

How demonic can you get to require prolife hospitals to perform abortions or go out of the business.

And FOCA will do this nationally to prolife doctors, et al regardless of their religion.

Aside from life issues, the Pope himself is pretty much a globalist economic socialist.

Socialist? Really? You might want to read Pope Leo XIII's encyclical Rerum Novarum:

Hence, it is clear that the main tenet of socialism, community of goods, must be utterly rejected, since it only injures those whom it would seem meant to benefit, is directly contrary to the natural rights of mankind, and would introduce confusion and disorder into the commonweal. The first and most fundamental principle, therefore, if one would undertake to alleviate the condition of the masses, must be the inviolability of private property.
This is Catholic doctrine. You think the Pope doesn't know this?

I work directly for the Knights of Columbus, our order came out STRONGLY AGAINST Obama. We took out full page ads stating that we were opposed to pro-abortion candidates.

Do not let some fringe memember speak for the order!

I know many Italian and Irish Catholics in the North who still vote Demonrat because “my grandfather and father were Union Democrats and I’ll diea Democrat too” types.

Somebody needs to tell them FDR is dead,...

Not in the least. What Pope Benedict does support is strong ethis in market place. He has denounced socialism: http://conservativecolloquium.wordpress.com/2008/02/02/pope-dissects-and-denounces-socialism/

55% of Roman Catholics voted for 0

That figure is for CINOs. Weekly Mass-going Catholics went 55%-43% for McCain.

That’s right. In their Catholic-bashing mode, they are forgetting the big picture, and shame on them!

If this is true, then perhaps it is poetic justice for the Catholics who have been voting Democrat all of these years. Or, perhaps I am wrong?

The figure is meaningless. Exit polls are not scientific.

It’s just convenient non-data useful as a weapon in the hands of anti-Catholic bigots.

The Catholic Church/BXVI have a job cut out for themselves. They were either silent or complicit in much of the change in our social fabric for 40 years. I wish them all the success in the world.

It's a plausible explanation. I'm sure they figure there won't be any consequences.

What happened to that Dem moniker about ‘Separation of Church and State’? Oh but I’m sure the ACLU will come to the defense of the Catholic Charities.... /sc

I guess slander is the order of the day on this thread.

55% of Roman Catholics voted for 0, why attack your base?

That's the beauty of this irony. It will also happen to others in the base. But, they won't see it coming and will wonder what the heck happened. Obama's fascism will eventually destroy everything if not stopped.

Life issues are very important to the Dems, and particularly to this President.

Recall that Obama took a hard, thumbs-down position on the Terry Schiavo case.

A significantly lower number of weekly mass attending Catholics voted for Obama, and the majority of those were Hispanics, who unfortunately live in parishes where the Dem party is more important than the religion. The non-Hispanic weekly-mass attending Catholic vote was less than 30% of the theoretically Catholic vote.

This means that most of the Catholics who voted for Obama were ethnic Catholics (that is, Irish-American union members who always vote Dem, never go to mass, but claim to be Catholic based on their grandparents’ religion) or Hispanics, who have been totally sucked in by the Dem party and their lousy “liberation theology” Anglo priests.

BTW, a majority of mainstream Evangelicals voted for the 0. Only conservative non-Hispanic Catholics and very conservative Evangelicals did not vote for him.
