Employees Urged to Seek Wage Rights
Wall Street Journal ^ | 4/6/2010 | Staff

The Labor Department is encouraging low-wage and immigrant workers to turn in employers who are shortchanging their pay, as part of an expanding effort to enforce wage and hour rules.

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis launched a campaign last week called "We Can Help," asking workers in industries from construction to food services to notify the agency of suspected wage and hour violations.

The agency is also relying on tips from worker advocacy groups, widening efforts by the Obama administration to enlist activist groups to help with enforcement in a range of sectors from toy safety to distracted driving.

However, business groups are expressing concern that the Labor Department's effort will generate unfounded complaints.

Ms. Solis, a Hispanic-American, has signaled from early in her tenure that stepping up enforcement of wage and hour rules would be a high priority. The Labor Department's wage and hour division recently hired more than 250 additional investigators—an increase of one third—and is rolling out a publicity campaign that includes bilingual public-service announcements in Spanish and English.

In an ideal reality-based world, they would. In Obamaland, probably not. Because if they did, Pedro would lose his job...therefore, Pedro wouldn’t report his boss, and so the whole question is moot.

Yes, and the attack is through the use of the “Divide and Conquer” technique. Trouble is, absent a miracle, it will probably work. Men against women, spy upon spy, employee against employer, black against white, non-citizen against citizen, Catholic against Protestant, Jew against Christian all designed to produce endless strife without any fear of the citizens uniting. Hell even Aristotle 2400 years ago wrote about keeping the people divided.

Actually, I like this. Us employers will no longer be subsidized for hiring illegals and will start firing them.

I wouldn't mind if the federal government engaged in sting operations to nail employers who are hiring illegals. I am sure there are plenty of American actors of hispanic descent who would be more than happy to help in this effort.

There is no excuse for anyone to hire illegals, and anyone who does should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The only solid resolution that is fair is to have government run business and have every employee work or the government.

Problem solved. /s

No, it won’t. If you use illegals you don’t have to pay matching FICA or unemployment insurance. Just give the illegals what you promised them and most won’t say a word.

“Screw all such employers. They are the entities making staying here so attractive, and are protecting these same illegals in other ways to cover themselves”

I don’t think illegals are any longer hired soley by fringe employers althought I can’t explain how they get hired by places around me like Mcdonalds, state road workers, etc., but they tend to populate jobs where you didn’t see them before, and from their looks and heavy accents, they are definitely fairly border-fresh. I don’t get it.

Labor Secretary Hilda Solis launched a campaign last week called "We Can Help,"

Yes...the worse phrase in the American lexicon: "I'm from the Government and I'm here to help".

This is an all out war against our traditions, our foundation and conservatives.

I kind of agree with this. One way to kill the jobs of illegals is to make them too big of a risk.

...but they're only taking the jobs that liberal trust-fund babies won't do.

.

How can Americans legally reduce their reportable income?

Deal with relatives and trusted friends - that have uniqued skills
Offer to help doing carpentry, etc.

The relative - or - trusted friend - then gives you a “personal loan”

These “personal loans” can be exchanged with others

It will take a bit of fine tuning and keeping “personal loan” records

But it is not illegal to give a relative or a trusted friend a personal loan - with no interest charged

Starve the bastards in DC!

They can not hit you with income taxes if you are below a certain level -

No different actually then the physician swapping services with an attorney or a dentist - or a plumber

A long tradition exists of professionals bartering services or goods

Hey Doc! I got your chicken here - and your car is fixed too!

Can your son do me a favor and stop by and cut my grass next week? Thanks!

They didn’t mention illegals. But I get your concern.
Any employer crazy enough to hire an illegal desires what he gets. But, what if a disgruntled employee claims this happened. Just the legal fees alone would put most people out of Biz.

Do you know how much trouble employers have in determining nationality?

Talk to one some time....

Is there a single industry left in this country that the Obama administration hasn’t set out to destroy?

Lawyers, I haven't seen any "Will sue for food" signs, yet.

And "gubmint" workers are thriving! In fact it is the only segment of the country showing robust growth, all on the backs of American taxpayers. I hope & pray these parasite bastards roast in hell for eternity!

And I especially hope & pray that 0bozo & his fellow commie pig rat bastards are tormented & roasted in hell even tenfold for the destruction & evil they have perpetuated in this country!

Yes...the ones that slaughter babies and the ones that prostitute kids.
