Itd be hard for him to say no. Romney, Pawlenty, and Huntsman will split the centrist vote, so theres an opportunity on the right for a prominent conservative to swoop in and consolidate the base. Thats what Palins going to try to do, leveraging her higher name recognition to swamp Bachmann and Cain in Iowa, but Perry would be a major challenge for her. In fact, given his record on jobs, he may even pull some votes from the centrists.
Coming soon to a debate near you?
With conservatives aching for more choices in the approaching 2012 Republican primary, Perry declined Tuesday to rule out a White House bid during a press conference about a new anti-abortion measure. Also Tuesday, his top strategist told the Tribune that the governor is, naturally, thinking about it given the flattering comments made recently by some in the GOP, although he doesnt see any change in his direction.
The Perry camp is still telegraphing the notion that the default position is not to run, but its safe to say they have cracked the door open, at least a little bit, over the last week. Specific wording matters a lot in these speculative political matters
Obviously, its flattering to have everybody, Rush Limbaugh and all these other conservative, right-of-center leaders, talk about you, urging you to think about it, urging you to run, saying they support you. But I dont see any difference in terms of the governors thinking, [Perry strategist Dave] Carney said.
Im sure hes thinking about it because its just human nature when you have Rush Limbaugh spend 20 minutes talking about you and have all these other people mention you, that you dont sort of think thats flattering and think about it.

According to PSD sufferers, Sarah couldn't possibly run because she hasn't courted Iowa and it's too late.
I take it Rick has been all over Iowa?
All other things being equal, I think there would be a backlash against another Texas governor.
Do it. You may be the only one who can take out the Obamanation.
More day-dreaming from the “Anybody But Palin” crowd.
ROFLOL, you first need to be running to swamp anybody in IOWA.
Perry has been to Iowa several times.
Palin...she can’t win it. She’s just in there for attention.
That reality show was pretty much the last nail. If she has any sense, that she already knows that. She wins the primary (unlikely), and it is 4 more years of the vactioner in chief who just insulted a queen and thousands of families affected by storms in our nation’s heartland.
What, specifically, is Perry’s stance on illegal immigration and the border fence? If he’s even made a few waffly comments about amnesty or a ‘guest-worker program’ he’s out. We don’t need another ‘moderate’ disappointing us on one of the most important issues. If he’s “alligators in the moat” about it, I might give him a listen.
Romney is no centrist. He’s an abortionist, big government statist. See his actual record as governor of Massachusetts.
He's not quite the RINO that some here have made him out to be, but he is not the guy that can get microphone ambushed and survive either.
To explain the conservative truth to the unwashed masses, we've got to find somebody that at least ‘approaches’ Reagan's communication skills.
Rick Perry has pocketed lots of money from the homebuilders that employ the illegals...nuff said.
I’d vote for Perry if Palin doesn’t run. Or if Cain doesn’t get any traction in the primaries.
FYI..Perry was on Greta’s show yesterday. LIVE from the US Border. He excoriated Obama..he was very impressive..suggest you see if it’s on YouTube or the FOX website..I was very impressed..he comes across like Jim Arness on Gunsmoke..strong, competent..
Here’s one Texan who wouldn’t vote for him.....no way
I could support Rick Perry.
Rick Perry is the anti-Bush, a real Conservative, from what I can tell out here in the hinterlands.
He’s my #1 choice because he has a long, strong, conservative track record of executive experience.
I’ll take Rick Perry all day long. I don’t know all his warts yet, and I’m sure he has some. But even compared to Sarah (who I love), Rick is a more likely winner, I think.
That could certainly be a problem, but if he has a good record that he can point to, it would likely mitigate such a backlash. He would be politically well served to distance himself a little from Bush on the grounds of Bush's liberalism.
Rick Perry will not get my vote. He’s just another RINO in disguise. I’ve had my fill of these establishment types.
Yep.
Why?
I’d like to hear his negatives.
