Sleep Train & the Betrayal of Rush Limbaugh
my brain ^ | march 4th, 2012 | me

Posted on 03/03/2012 8:43:31 PM PST by gaijin

Dale Carlsen was about 24 years old and had been merely selling mattresses, but finally Dale got frustrated and went into the biz for himself. He was coming up on having to make a payment on the loan for his new, tiny mattress company.

He didn't have much money, and this loan was at over 20% interest, ok?

Worse was that Dale had chosen the location of his first mattress store in gritty South Sacramento, near Sac State, alongside some train tracks, next to a flea market. He'd thought the flea market foot traffic would bring customers, but in fact flea market afficianados are not huge mattress spenders, right?

And in fact that first Sleep Train location had lots of drug dealers and SLUTS nearby --I'm serious.

So in fact young Dale was looking at a major business failure for his little struggling company. But next door to his little disheveled mattress dump was a pizza place, and that's where Dale, the CEO of the erstwhile tiny Sleep Train, Inc. would eat:

A drummer had taken time off from touring with his band to sell radio ads for KFBK, a Sacramento radio station, simply cuz his buddy worked there. So this drummer had gotten this gig as an, "Account Exec" and he would eat at the pizza place next to Dale's tiny, dumpy mattress store:

One day Dejected Dale is staring off into space over an oily pool in a piece of pepperoni, muttering about not being able to sell mattresses to sluts (a bit like that Georgetown feminazi from hell, except that these really were pro sluts). Meanwhile sitting next to him was Mr. Radio Account Exec, drumming his hands on the table, and he chirps back to Dale's, to cheer him up a bit, "Well there's a new guy at KFBK who just moved into town, and he needs a mattress..."

Dale goes, "OK well send him by..."

Maybe you have figured out that this guy who needed a mattress was Rush Limbaugh...?

OK well, poor fat Rush (who by that time had been fired 7 times and was 42 or so) waddles into Dale's place to buy his mattress for his tiny and empty apartment in none other than Rio Linda (which was the only place poor Rush could afford to live in Sacramento, at the time).

Rush bought a mattress, and being a natural salesman also convinced Dale to consider advertising on his show, on KFBK.

And Dale did exactly that, he took out ads on the show of fat, poor Rush Limbaugh, the unknown whose career would shoot skyward like a P51, and completely transform AM radio from an empty backwater for kooks and weather afficianados into a hotbed of politics and a, "Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy".

And Rush turned on the charm, and talked up Dale's mattresses so much that they drove from miles and miles around, saying, "I want the same mattress Rush sleeps on..."

And so with that thunderclap of Rush-mediated publicity it turned out that Dale could make the payment on his +20% interest loan --he survived. And soon after he opened up a branch adjoining the parking lot of Rush's station, so intimate was the link between the growing success of each man.

And now Dale Carlsen has over 250 stores, in Sleep Train, making 1/3 of a billion dollars yearly.

But then something happened:

Dale fired Rush, the saleman extraordinaire, who'd saved Dale decades before.

Why?

--> Because Rush insulted dishonest feminist who thinks the government should pay for contraceptives. < --

"Do companies like Carbonite actually think liberals are going buy what they are selling?"

Carbonite does a lot of advertising on the progressive station where I live. I think they know how valuable all the info on those liberal laptops cluttering Starbucks is assumed to be.

I like Rush. I have listen to his show since about 1999.
I will continue to so do because I share a lot of views with him and I appreciate his ability to voice his opinions.
I also have noticed over the years that one hell of a lot of people are unable to appreciate the subtlety of his comments quite often.

A lot of times...whats he's saying is not really what he is saying.

“Agreeing” is not “idolizing.”

You wanna play paddy-cake with these people, you go ahead. Don’t expect those of us that could articulate conservative values before Rush showed up to drink your koolaid.

They did not look at the logic independently. They ass-u-me’d that if Rush was calling Fluke a personal slut then the logic added up, without following it themselves. Nothing has turned up to suggest Fluke had, or personally claimed to have, the kind of love life in school that would have called for a $3000 budget.

Great story; thx for sharing. I could ‘see’ everything in my mind’s eye; so that is good writing.

You are trying to parse what “is” is.

No, I am following the dictionary definition of “be.” “To sympathize” does not come under “to be.”

Good God! What that man posted is the truth. I know. I lived there in Sacto. It was like a JFK assassination or 911 moment. New to town. Eating lunch in my car. Listening to radio.

When I got home I could not wait to tell my wife. "Honey, there is a guy on the radio that you will swear is me or my twin brother.

Only after a brief absence before he went national, I have listened each day. Not because I agree with him. Because he agrees WITH ME.

I felt the issue was a diversion from the beginning, so I never got tied into knots about it.

Yes, Fluke’s statements are indeed outrageous, but just another distraction from the economy.

If we want the Country back, we, the candidates, the talkers all need to be disciplined about focusing our attention on the winning issues. Am I saying Social issues are unimportant, and should be deferred? No, absolutely not. Let’s just make sure we take the lead on the issues we want to bring forward instead of being reactionaries to the diversions planted by the Left.

To put this into context, the issue of abortion is far more egregious than Fluke’s salvo, and yet we can argue on behalf of nascent life without losing our balance.

Let’s give Rush the chance to work through this.

If you don't think a shameless display like Fluke's was a “winning issue” for us, you don't know what you're looking at.

Flukes was a total “Maire Antoinette.”

As Rush often says... they'll tell you what they are afraid of...and they were terrified of this one judging by their efforts to punish him for talking about it.

WILD THEORY

Is it conceivable that Rush was set up?

I dont know about his daily pre-show prep. I know he’s had Issa on the show before. And - Fluke has been in the news since last Friday (Feb 23) - So Rush had to have some indication of who she was and what she might be saying (if she had testified on Feb 23)

Perhaps theres a mole at EIB who KNEW Rush was going to use the slut thing last week...(and didnt since she did not testify.)

Pelosi - gets tipped off by the mole. - Nervous about the Sherrif Joe investigation - she calls the “informal” hearing - as bait - because she already knows what Rush is planning. Completely overshadows Joe - and causes negative publicity for Conservatives...and EIB.

>> If it had been me I might have been even more to the point and said sorry for calling Fluke personally a “slut”

It can be difficult to maintain personal regard for one’s political adversaries. And the Left knows this intentionally deploying the issues that challenge the civility, the peace, the perception of Conservatives.

Team Obama has been baiting the Right since day one. Its psy-ops portfolio is no doubt bulging with plans to derail the our chances for 2012. Given the results, I’m concerned.

- - -

We’re still engaged in Operation Fluke. Let’s not disassemble.

I seriously doubt that this would have been the end of the Rush Limbaugh show. I tend to think there are sponsors waiting for ads on his program. Right now it is enmeshed with political spots. There are only so many advertising spots available around a show - I used to sell ads for a local radio show, so, I know what I’m talking about.
