MH370: Hopes dashed as orange objects turn out to be fishing equipment
CNN News ^ | 03/31/2014 | By Faith Karimi and KJ Kwon

Potential leads on the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 keep coming. So do the setbacks and frustrations.

Monday's search ended without finding anything significant, Australian officials said. Four orange objects spotted by search aircraft and earlier described as promising turned out be nothing more than old fishing gear, they said.

Underscoring the difficulty of the search, U.S. Navy officials loaded underwater locating gear aboard an Australian naval support vessel and set out to sea Monday evening, but won't be able to make use of the equipment until searchers narrow the search zone.

U.S. Navy Cmdr. William Marks told CNN's "State of the Union" that his team needs a conclusive piece of debris to narrow down the search area before deploying the equipment.

"We have to be careful not to send it in the wrong place," he said. "But we also wanted to get it out there as close as we can to what we believe is the right place."

The gear includes a pinger locator that's towed behind a ship and scans for the sound of the locator beacon attached to the plane's flight data recorder. Also on board is a remotely operated submersible that can look for wreckage on the ocean floor.

It will take the ship, the Ocean Shield, three days just to get to the search zone, leaving precious little time to locate the plane's flight data recorders before the batteries on its locator beacon run out. The batteries are designed to last 30 days; the plane has been missing 23 days.

Under favorable sea conditions, the pingers can be heard 2 nautical miles away. But high seas, background noise, wreckage or silt can all make pingers harder to detect.

In this case, searchers barely know where to look at all.

Every time a piece of “Debris” is found CNN has it as “Breaking News” doesn’t take a genius to figure out the difference between actual plane wreckage and a paper cup but hey, as long as it takes the focus off of Obama the media will keep reporting on garbage being found in the Indian Ocean

“2 nautical miles away”.

That’s a figure I’ve been waiting to hear. Now, is that 2 nautical miles going to work where the ocean is more than 2 miles deep? I dunno.

Anyway, if you forget about depth, and do spherical packing of 2 mile spheres on the ocean map, you can see it’s a real needle-in-the-haystack search. It’s no wonder they are jumping on the flimsiest sightings of sea garbage as the black box battery life winds down.

How many people think they are looking in the wrong place and that this is all just a distraction?

The oceans are full of trash and derelict fishing gear and that is most likely what you will find if you go looking for objects on the surface just about anywhere.

I’m amazed at how CNN can take a 30 second daily update and stretch it to 24 hours.

This story is almost done. And in a few days, so will this “list” be done. I don’t think we’ll hear much more since the Chinese have come out so strongly that they’re all dead! This will join DB Cooper in the mystery hall of fame.

I made this point before. Originally they were covering a search are about the size of Ohio. Then it expanded to two areas about the size of Texas. Now they seem to be back to searching an area the size of North America. That's like looking for a 1/2 carrot diamond on a dry sandy beach.

Am starting to lean more and more toward pakistan or yemen as a touchdown point or iran. Maybe someone just wanted a plane for the saudi royal for free. If something is not found soon, it is going to make someone look ignorant in the extreme with their calculations. Everyday is the same ole same ole ... nothing but trash in the Indian Ocean.

Lol. I used to think those clowns that told us the government was spying on us were the tin-foil-hat crowd. I might still have egg on my face, but I won't go the "black hole" route yet. :o)

The Malaysian Govt might have shot this plane down..they wouldn’t want to admit that because it would cause an international incident with China that is the last thing they want to have happen..they know what happened to this plane, either it got shot down or it landed somewhere, I doubt the passengers are alive because where do you keep 239 people for 3 weeks

All you have to do is pick a spot and wait. These ships know the flow and they know it is in "paths".

Obviously, this is a hopeless hunt.

Maybe check some other places....like Pakistan.
