JERUSALEM – Israel's antiquities authority says archaeologists have discovered a rare 3,000-year-old inscription of a name mentioned in the Bible. The name "Eshbaal Ben Beda" appears on a large ceramic jar. Eshbaal of the Bible was a son of King Saul.

Archaeologists Yosef Garfinkel and Saar Ganor say the jar belonged to a different Eshbaal, likely the owner of an agricultural estate. They said Tuesday it is the first time the name was discovered in an ancient inscription. It is one of only four inscriptions discovered from the biblical 10th century B.C. Kingdom of Judah, when King David is said to have reigned.

Archaeologists pieced together the inscription from pottery shards found at a 2012 excavation in the Valley of Elah in central Israel...

Psalms 85: 11 Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven.

The more that the world contests Jewish/Israeli ownership of the land of Israel, the more ancient proof of this very fact that is excavated from the ground. The Lord said that in the last days, he would bring back the Nation of Israel to the mountains of Israel, Judea, and Samaria and plant them. They will not be uprooted!

there is no army in the middle east that could defeat Israel.

The problem is the nut in the white house giving Iran time to make a nuke.

i wonder if this potentially pushes back the archaelogical chronological confirmation of the OT since i believe the previous earliest record involved David.

I have been there twice! It is a great land and perhaps when Jesus comes back I will live there. Ultimately, all Israel will be saved when they cry out to their Messiah Jesus Christ, however prior to that there are some great judgments coming on the land because of abortion, homosexuality, and unbelief (Zechariah 14)

Me too! However, prior to Jesus coming back, there are some great judgments coming on Israel because of abortion, homosexuality, and unbelief (Zechariah 14). If you did, you may end up living at Petra for a while (Revelation 12:14) until Jesus comes back (Isaiah 63)

Does anyone think this is the reason the Islamists are destroying artifacts and entire cities to hide this biblical evidence. I sure do.

Do you think we will avoid that wrath here in North America? After all, Israel is populated by jews today because of the United States. And we have some influence on them. The mighty hand of God reaches far and wide.

No, judgment is coming to ALL nations. I am hoping for “rapture” of believers prior to judgment. I am just saying that Israel is guilty of the same sins...;-(

It would have been stranger if the text had read “Eshbosheth.”

In the Book of Samuel, Saul's sons are listed as Jonathan and Ish-boshet. "Ish-bosheth" means "man of shame," and it is highly unlikely that anyone, let alone a king, would name their son that. In I Chronicles 8:33, there is a long list of geneologies, in which we learn that Saul's younger son was named "Ish-baal," meaning "man of Ba'al."

The names now make sense; Saul the politician was appealing to the two religious camps in his country, naming his elder son "Jonathan" ("Gift of Yahweh") and his younger son Man of Ba'al.

The scribes who copied the Book of Samuel were literally ashamed to admit Saul's gesture to his pagan subjects, so changed the name to "man of shame."

You probably know this...Godly men often named their children after Baal, a name for God. Baal eventually morphed into a separate entity like Allah, the moon god. The translators of the Bible were concerned about Baal being a separate god and changed the names to “ bosheth” rather than -baal

I think I disagree...David named one of his children with the -Baal name. This would show that Baal was another name for God originally, then morphed into a false one, like allah...and El...and Adoni...etc

Or maybe the word ba’al to mean master or owner (as in the Hebrew ba’al habayit) came before it was used as the name of a god.

I don't think there is a single place in the Hebrew Bible where God (i.e., the One True God) is referred to as "ba'al." On the other hand, there is much evidence that Canaanites were worshiping gods called "Ba'al" long before Joshua led the Israelites into Canaan.

IMHO, what it shows is that Ba'al worship was rife in ancient Israel, despite efforts of the Judges and Prophets to stamp it out (the Bible confirms this fact repeatedly), and that kings were sometimes willing to placate that segment of their subjects.
