s it me, or does the argument that the Republican nomination can be taken from Donald Trump at a contested convention make almost no sense?
It's not that it would be unfeasible for Ted Cruz or some other candidate to win a majority of delegates after the first ballot is cast at the convention. If anything, it seems more and more likely that Cruz, given his shrewdness at delegate selection, would be able to pull this off as early as the second ballot.
However, if Trump arrives in Cleveland having won the most votes, the most contests, and the most delegates -- all of which is very likely -- depriving him of the nomination would be an unprecedented move in the modern political era. And doing so would likely end in disaster not only for the GOP as a whole but its anti-Trump wing in particular.
The argument we're seeing out of the Cruz camp and the Republican National Committee essentially boils down to this: convention delegates choose the nominee, and that this is how it's always been done. This argument has the benefit of being technically true because a majority of delegates do, of course, select the nominee at the convention.

I am for Cruz, but if Trump comes in with the most and the GOP pulls some BS to deny him I have no problem not voting at all and letting Hillary have it. Which maybe the GOPs plan all along, it gives them a target to continue to raise money.
>> However, if Trump arrives in Cleveland having won the most votes, the most contests, and the most delegates — all of which is very likely —
— then he’ll get his fair chance to win a majority amon the voting delegates.
If he can accomplish that, he’ll become the nominee.
If he can’t eventually win a majority of the delegates, then he will not be the nominee.
Simple, and fair.
Yes this writer gets it, and except for an excessive belief in the current polls showing Bernie and Hillary beat Trump in November the article is valid.
Depriving Trump of the nomination because he lost to another candidate is unfair??
Trump logic
Good thing CBS is looking out for conservatives.
“Depriving Trump of the nomination because he lost to another candidate is unfair??”
Your case would be much stronger if Cruz came in within 100 or so delegates of Trump; And if he showed any strength in the NorthEast. Remember, Cruz lost the whole SEC primary and Florida badly.
Use http://www.270towin.com/ and fill in the states after the next 2 weeks. Trump will dominate population centers.

Not having the people of America behind you and losing the primary but using smarmy lawyer ways to secure the nomination is fair.
Cruzer Logic
Any Cruz supporters want to put their money where their mouth is?? I'll bet $500 to the charity of our choice that Ted Cruz will not be on the ballot come November. Any takers?
My case is that if Trump gets the majority of the total delegates he gets the nomination.
Same with the other two.
But naturally Trump is demanding the nomination even if he doesn't get those delegates and someone else does, claiming that not handing it to him is :cheating, unfair, ....
I posted my bet on Mark Levin’s Facebook. Silence from the Great One..big blowhard who used to be solid. TDS crank now.
You might be right.
Maybe Trump's thuggery in threatening to throw the race to his good friend Hillary if he is not handed the nomination, even if he loses by not getting the required delegates, will intimidate the RNC to give in.
If that happens then Hillary creams him in the general, which is probably what Trump wants anyway.
If the RNC/GOP pulls something at the convention to take the nomination from Trump they may be creating more than stay-at-homes, they may be creating something completely new:
Kamikaze Voter
Removing Republicans from every office everywhere
....”then Hillary creams him in the general, which is probably what Trump wants anyway”.....
Well Trump has nothing to loose by handing the election to her and a lot to gain.
“Removing Republicans from every office everywhere”
I agree..my post from yesterday:
He doesnt ... he does not have a chance. All you need to know is how badly he lost to Trump in FL and how badly he is about to get beat in the NorthEast. Florida is the second home of the NorthEast.
What bothers me about Cruz is that he continues to throw NY Values and Mafia arrows at Trump so he can try to scoop another 4 or 5 delegates, not realizing (or caring) that every time he does this he is insulting more and more Florida voters. Instead of stepping down after NY, he will just fill up his bag of hand grenades and continue to blow up potential voters.
Cruz supporters are going to realize what a terrible mistake it was to run this civil war deep into July. Youre going to realize that, just like his bomb throwing in the senate didnt advance any cause, he will have destroyed any unity amongst the same squishy Republicans, Independents and crossover Democrats he is so badly going to need in the swing states. A loss of Floridas 29 electoral votes would require him to win WI and PA just to break even again; then carry the swing states of NC, VA,and OH.
At 8:01 on election night, because the voters he has insulted stay home, Ted Cruz will lose the great sunshine state of Florida, and with that, the election. (and no Wisconsins 10 delegates wont make up for FLs 29)
While youre having a few beers to drown out the loss, you might do well to have a few shots along with it, because the GOP will lose Rubios Senate seat as well.
I am sure that he will be a regular honored guest in the Hillary White House.
....” I have no problem not voting at all and letting Hillary have it”......
Trump does not have the support he needs from the Republican party to win the Republican nomination.....so you’ve already cast your vote for Hillary if you’re not voting and appear quite content doing so.
Although I hope Trump is the nominee, I put nothing past the corrupt GOP and I’m almost tempted to take your bet because I know they are fine losing to Hillary, and would rather have her in than Cruz...and will do anything to deny the chances of Trump beating her...but I don’t believe it enough to put $500 on the line :)
The GOPe is only using Ted to get a contested convention. He will not be selected by them. Anyone the GOPe selects will not win against Hillary. That is the point. They want the status quo of open borders and big government.
