DNA discovery identifies living descendants of Biblical Canaanites

DNA research is shining new light on the Biblical Canaanite civilization, which existed thousands of years ago in the Middle East.

The ancient civilization, which created the first alphabet and is mentioned frequently in the Bible, has long fascinated historians. LiveScience reports that, because the Canaanites kept their records on papyrus, rather than clay, relatively little is known about them.

Now, however, scientists have found a genetic ‘trail’ back to the Canaanites’ ancient world.

By sequencing the genomes of five Canaanites that lived 4,000 years ago with genomes from 99 people living in modern day Lebanon, researchers identified a strong genetic link to the mysterious civilization.

The results surprised the scientists, whose work was supported by U.K. biomedical research charity The Wellcome Trust.

I wonder if they have compared DNA from current Lebanese with Libyans. They should be similar.

Of course North Africa has had numerous invaders since the Phoenicians.

My DNA test showed I was 18% Sub-Sahara where Jews lived and where Noah came from. And yes, I’m Jewish.

Canaanites once lived in what we now recognize as Israel, the Palestinian territories, Lebanon, Syria and Jordan. The remains of the five ancient Canaanites studied as part of the DNA research were recovered in the modern-day Lebanese city of Sidon.

Who could have seen that coming?

5, 4, 3, 2, 1... Arabs on the West Bank and in Gaza are the direct descendants of the Canaanites. You know that's next.

This will be a basis for the Arabs on the West Bank and in Gaza demanding Israel vacate it's land.

That is interesting SkyDancer.

It is amazing how much of that survived in bloodlines like your Hungarian. :)

I have never done a DNA test, I am mostly Polish. I wonder if I have some Sub-Saharan genes.

Us Polish Jews are still Jews.

Pretty interesting. But the Canaanites were supposed to be large and fierce. When I think of the Lebanese I think of Danny Thomas.

Didn’t God tell Joshua that the Canaanites would be a thorn in his side after Joshua didn’t wipe them out?

There was this online outfit that sent you the materials. It consisted of two vials and four cotton swabs. What you did was take two samples from inside each cheek, put them in the vial and send them off. They paid for the FedEx. Took a couple of months to get the results. The other DNA was 80% European and 2%Asian. I guess some ancestor got a bit frisky after those long voyages.

Send me five bucks and a cheek swab and I will trace you back to Adam.

His daughter is not too large, but she’s plenty fierce on the left side of the aisle! ;)

The Magyars came out of the Tibetan steppes way back when who are the base for Hungarians. The language is Ugo-Finnish (go figger that one out).

This reminds me of a silly song we heard in church back in the ‘50s and ‘60s:

THE HORNET SONG

When the Canaanites hardened their hearts against God,
And grieved Him because of their sin,
God sent along hornets to bring them to terms,
And to help His own people to win.

Chorus
God does not compel us to go, oh, no!
He never compels us to go.
God does not compel us to go against our will,
But He just makes us willing to go.

It’s silly, but cute. There are a few verses.

I’m sure these researchers used the best methods, but we should be wary of drugstore DNA kits:

Where do people come up with this nonsense that the Israelites completely wiped out the Canaanites? They were to be driven out a little at time, some made treaties with the Israelites, but they were never wiped out.
Even at the time of David there were still original Canaanites in the land.
