Scientist: Oldest American skull found

The "Peņon Woman III" skeleton was found near Mexico City International Airport.

But perhaps more significant than the bones' age, researchers said, is that they were found while digging a well near Mexico City International Airport. Because the remains were discovered outside the United States, scientists will be able to study the DNA and structure of the skeleton without the objection of Native American groups, who can claim and rebury ancestral remains under a 1990 U.S. law.

Because the remains were discovered outside the United States, scientists will be able to study the DNA and structure of the skeleton without the objection of Native American groups, who can claim and rebury ancestral remains under a 1990 U.S. law.

The oldest skull up to now, believed to be that of "Buhl Woman," was found in 1989 at a gravel quarry in Idaho. Scientists said it dates back from 10,500 to 11,000 years. But researchers scarcely studied those bones before the Shoshone-Bannock tribe claimed and reburried them.

I can sympathize with our Amerindian / aboriginal citizens over their past mistreatments, but this is an area where a badly written law has blocked scientific progress. Any competent anthropologist can tell you that the odds of any tribe remaining in the same place for 10k years is miniscule. To be able to claim and control ancestral remains from several hundred years back is one thing, to do so for such above as well as the Kenewick Man pushes the envelope beyond logic.

"If this proves right, it's going to be quite contentious," said Gonzalez, who teaches at John Moores University in England and received a grant last week from the British government to conduct her research. "We're going to say to Native Americans, 'Maybe there were some people in the Americas before you, who are not related to you.' "

Well of course! I am surprised that someone admitted the truth about the biggest lie in north american anthropology and it just goes to show you how politicized the scientific community has become. Its why any remains are immediately re-buried or cremated so that any anthropoligical evidence that points to anything other than indians being of victimhood class.

Dude, you gotta see this:

Emboldened by her finding, Gonzalez will try to prove her theory that the bones of the Peñon Woman belong not to Native Americans, but to descendants of the Ainu people of Japan.

So they've found Helen Thomas. That's why she's been absent from those White House briefings. She's dead.

I think that all you can say about the modern Ainu is that they have more Caucasian characteristics than non-Ainu Japanese who are closer to the Koreans in genetic ancestry.

A more intriguing thought is the steppe mummies found in western China who have no visible oriental features and blonde hair. It brings to question what are the races except for semi-convenient terms of recent ancestry. Since there is no fertility problems, using the word 'race' for such is really a mis-use of the word except that there is no other working term for the results of the 'expression' of dominant genetic characteristics.

The irony for such racial purists as the Nazis and such is that the Arayan[sp?] profile of blue eyes and blonde hair is recessive in almost any hybridization. In other words, it appears that they are the weaker genes.

Nah, she only shows up when she can harrang Ari. I heard and saw her ugly puss within the past several days doing just that on Fox News. The desire to reach through the TV Screen to whack her one is almost irresistable! Yank her press pass already.

So much for the La Raza rant about the white man "stealing my ancestoral land". Ya gotta wonder how they are going to react to the charges of "brown-skinned invaders stole Mexico from my white ancestors" charges, though. I mean, what with them being all for "historical justice",and all.I wonder how much back rent they are willing to pay?

"We're going to say to Native Americans, 'Maybe there were some people in the Americas before you, who are not related to you.' "

"Native American" isn't really a term that identifes race. I'd say it's quite likely that BOTH groups of people were here at the same time. Hell, one or both could have originated here, and the while ones migrated to what is not Japan."The Americas" is one big-ass piece of real estage.

I wouldn't worry too much about the 1990 law...a lot of scientists now believe that 'if' they happen to come upon a skull dating several thousand years...they simply are going to take it and perform all the analysis necessary...and then report the discovery to the authorities after their tests. The Indians still get their skull...but the scietists believe the law was a silly thing to put into place. It assumes that everyone you find in America is Indian and cannot possibly be European in nature. There are numerous thoughts now that some Spanish or Portuguese natives who did somehow make it over 10,000 years ago, which really disrupts all of the political strength of the current Indian migration...that they only came from Asia. Once you prove a European did make it over....the Indians began to really question their entire history.

As we discovered with Columbus and the vikings...there is always more to the story than what was originally thought. The American Indians need to start preparing themselves for that day. And it may not be that far off.

Thanks CobaltBlue. Okay, the older one (Blam's) got pulled due to a copyright complaint, and soooo, I'm not too sure it was pinged. The saved versions I've seen lack both our GGG keywords and the ping message. So, I'm taking the chance. My apologies to all for whom five or so messages in a short space is too many. I'm going to bed now, so you'll be safe for a day or more.

Unbelievable that a law predecides the race of any bones that may be found. A good illustration of the practical limits of government.

Some Japanese look surprisingly European. I worked with a guy who was American born but 100% Japanese ancestry. He had black hair and I thought was from some Eastern European stock.

I guess the fact that his last name was Ishi should have been a giveaway but for some reason it wasn't. After he told me, it was obvious he was Japanese but still he could have fooled me before I knew it.
