Asian Americans Turn Democratic Their support for President Obama on Nov. 6 caught many political pundits by surprise. By Taeku Lee and Karthick Ramakrishnan November 23, 2012 As the dust settles on the presidential election, there seems to be a new theory daily as to why Mitt Romney lost and what it signals for the future of the Republican Party. Common to nearly all the speculation are the partisan implications of demographic change. The United States is shifting gradually toward a majority-minority electorate, with ever-growing numbers of Latino and Asian American voters. Notably, these groups are increasingly voting as Democrats....

If some fringe theorists have their way, Earth has just over a month to live... While rumors fly online about the Dec. 21 date, Mayan apocalypse believers are hardly the first to imagine the world ending. Here are some of the inventive and terrifying post-apocalyptic futures ever portrayed in literature and film...

Survival Diva here to discuss an important, life-saving tactic that too many Preppers leave out of their preparedness plan. We may think we have everything covered for survival, but what if we’ve prepared for six months or a year when a crisis comes that lingers for years? Few of us have the resources to put three, four, or five years of food storage and preparedness goods aside, but depending upon the emergency, we may need to figure out how to make it through a breakdown in infrastructure lasting that long. As David has said before, the “stuff” that you store...

Where is the Occupy Wall Street movement headed? It’s not back to long term camping in the parks. Their explicit goal for the next step of the movement is the destruction of the United States financial system. Anyone doubting this isn’t listening, because not only have leading leftist thinkers like Francis Fox Piven laid out this strategy, but the Occupy Wall Street movement has even written the instruction manual. First, the theory. In the last section of the Stephen K. Bannon film Occupy Unmasked, viewers are warned that the Occupy movement is just beginning. One of the left’s most revered...

Abolishing celibacy for priests would encourage more to take up the cloth, Alois Glück, president of the central committee for German Catholics argued on Friday. … But Glück admitted that since the Vatican was unlikely to change its stance on the issue in the foreseeable future, lay Catholics would hopefully play a bigger role in local parishes. “Women will have to take up more responsibilities,” he said. …

Here’s a super quick tip for those of you who use liquid laundry detergent. Did you know those jugs, once they’re empty, are great for storing wash water in? You can rinse them out a couple of times (usually I do that into my last load of laundry from that jug anyway) or just fill them up and let the bubbles settle and you’ve got a jug of water that’s great for using to wash clothes, floors, etc. It already has some soap in it!

GERMANTOWN, TN - (WMC-TV) - An extreme couponer claims she was attacked at a dollar store when she said the manager refused to honor her coupons. The entire ordeal was caught on camera. The sign at the store states coupons are accepted at Dollar Tree but a shopper is now nursing a busted lip and popped blood vessels in her eye after she says the manager refused to deal with her "wad of coupons". She said she was attacked while leaving the store. Missy Monzo-Marte says she was shopping at the Dollar Tree in Germantown with a friend, both of...

Report: White House considering corporate donors for inaugurationBy Alexandra Jaffe - 11/23/12 09:47 AM ET President Obama is considering allowing corporate donors to help fund his inauguration in 2013, the Wall Street Journal reports. Such a move would be a reversal of Obama's 2009 ban on such donations, which was then meant as a symbolic gesture. In 2009, the president raised over $50 million from donors, sans any contributions from corporate donors, to fund his inauguration. But he did not pursue corporate donors, "a gesture meant to show that well-heeled interests wouldn't have undue influence in his administration," according to...

I don't understand why either side would want to do this. Actually, wait, that's not true: I kind of understand why Democrats would want to do it. If it happens, it'll be a heavy bludgeon to use against Republicans in the next election cycle. One possible change would tax the entire salary earned by those making more than a certain level — $400,000 or so — at the top rate of 35 percent rather than allowing them to pay lower rates before they reach the target, as is the standard formula. That plan would allow Republicans to say they did...

German companies should receive a subsidy if they take on the long-term unemployed, state governments are set to propose on Friday. Up to 75 percent of the new salary should be paid by the state, if necessary for several years. As many as 200,000 people across Germany could get a job via the new scheme, the Brandenburg Labor Ministry estimated. It is to present the idea—along with five other states—to the upper house of the German parliament on Friday, the Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper reported. … The proposal would see companies receive the wage subsidy if they employ someone who “cannot...

A New Zealand volcano that featured as Mount Doom in "The Lord of the Rings" movies is in danger of erupting as pressure builds in a subterranean vent, officials have said. The Department of Conservation (DOC) warned hikers to avoid the summit of Mount Ruapehu, saying that temperature readings by scientists indicated there was an increased risk of eruption at New Zealand's largest active volcano. "The current situation can't continue, Ruapehu is so active that the temperatures have been going up and down a lot," DOC volcanic risk manager Harry Keys told Radio New Zealand... We in the blue states hear from the talking heads on Fox News and MSNBC that many of you in the red states are so distressed about the outcome of the elections that you would like to secede from the Union. Now, it seems that at least six of you -- Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina -- have submitted enough signatures (25,000) on petitions to the White House website to merit a formal response, with more petitions on the way. We wish you the best of luck with this. We feel your pain. If we can speak...

Iran Thrilled Over Obama Re-Election By Reza Kahlili November 23, 2012 In his first news conference after re-election, President Obama said there was still time for a diplomatic solution on Iran’s nuclear program and that Iran could enjoy “peaceful nuclear power” if it meets international obligations. Diplomacy has failed and international sanctions, though having some effect, have not persuaded the radicals ruling Iran to stop their illicit nuclear program. The economic screws must be tightened. Iranian leaders did not hide their satisfaction in Mr. Obama’s re-election and the prospect of more negotiations, which, in their view, will buy them more...

Emboldened Gay-Marriage Supporters Now Want More By Cheryl Wetzstein November 22, 2012 Bolstered by their recent wins at the ballot box, gay-marriage activists say they are looking to build on their newfound momentum at the ballot box and in the courtroom. Having broken a long losing string at the polls Nov. 6, gay marriage backers already have targeted several states for statewide voting drives, even as they await an imminent announcement from the Supreme Court that could reignite the battle over same-sex marriage in California. Among the states being primed for marriage battles are New Jersey, one of just two...

Evidence of the miserable life lived by the Maya during the Spanish conquest of the 16th century has emerged in an ancient settlement of Mexico's east coast, as archaeologists unearthed dozens of infant skeletons with signs of malnutrition and acute anemia. Found in the recently opened archaeological site of San Miguelito, in the middle of the hotel chain area of Quintana Roo, near Cancun, the human burials were excavated within 11 housing buildings dating to the Late Postclassic Mayan Period (1200 - 1550). Archaeologists of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) estimate that at least 30 burials belong...

The transcript for a debate which took place in the British parliament yesterday makes for sobering reading. The debate took place in the wake of the vote by the General Synod of the Church of England not to pass the measure which would have brought in women bishops. One of the remarks made by Sir Tony Baldry, the Second Church Estates Commissioner is particularly noteworthy. He said: As a consequence of the decision by the General Synod, the Church of England no longer looks like a national Church; it simply looks like a sect, like any other sect. If it...
