Withabout one third of the bowl games complete, the results show the Western Athletic Conference's claims to be competitive do not hold water.

One year ago this month, I opined about taxpayers footing the bill for several college football bowl games. Today, I decided to revisit the college football bowl scene and find out who's sponsoring this year's post-season gridiron clashes.

I was checking the latest BCS poll and I noticed all the matchups involve top 10 teams. I wonder if this is the first time this has happned. Usually a "less deserving" team gets in because of the automatic conference entry, a la ACC or Big East, or Notre Dame or a bowl game will pick a team with a bigger draw. Sportswriters Show They Are Not Bright Lights College football is a game -- a very profitable game -- played by unpaid college kids. The kids play for pride and a chance to go onto the pros. The universities, the television networks like ESPN, the bowl organizations and others reap the profits by exploiting them. So lets stop the annual whining about ...

Ohio State and Texas both had dreams of playing for a BCS National Championship this season. The Longhorns were ranked No. 1 in the country for three weeks this season, until losing at Texas Tech 39-33 on Michael Crabtree's winning touchdown catch with one second to play Nov. 1 at Jones AT&T Stadium in Lubbock, Texas. Even after that loss, Texas believed it still deserved to play for the Big 12 championship because of its 45-35 victory over Big 12 South foe Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry in Dallas on Oct. 11. Instead, the Sooners won the Big 12...

Texas Coach Mack Brown has a theory about bowl games. "If the teams are fairly even, the team that wants to be there the most and has the edge and is more motivated usually wins," Brown said. Third-ranked Texas would much rather be in Miami preparing to face Florida for the Bowl Championship Series title. But the Longhorns still have plenty of motivation against No. 10 Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl tonight in Glendale, Ariz. "Really, what's going through our minds is, 'Let's just put on a show, basically,' " Texas defensive end Brian Orakpo said. --snip--

1. Utah ... national champion?! Why not? I still don't believe this is the best team in America, but without a playoff, it's all about the résumé. This wasn't a fluky win and this wasn't a case of Alabama coming out flat. Utah straight-up whipped the Tide on both sides of the ball, and remember, this was against a team that was No. 1 for most of the year and was a quarter away from playing for the national title. This was a great, great 'Bama team, and Utah beat it like a drum. This isn't 1984 BYU; that Cougars...

It's all but over now. Linebacker Stevenson Sylvester recovered a fumble for the Utah Utes with 5:13 remaining against Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on Friday night, all but assuring an eighth straight bowl victory for the Utes - and a second straight in a prestigious Bowl Championship Series meeting with one of the legendary programs in college football history. The Utes have sacked quarterback John Parker Wilson seven times at the Louisiana Superdome, forced two turnovers, and held the Crimson Tide to 226 yards of offense.

GMAC may be in financial trouble, but that isn’t stopping the auto lender-turned-bank holding company from maintaining its corporate sponsorships. In October, GMAC changed its legal status so that it would be eligible for TARP funds passed by Congress. Late last month, GMAC was approved to receive a $5 billion lifeline from the U.S. government. However, the company is still maintaining its sponsorship of a collegiate bowl game set for Jan. 6 in Mobile, Ala. “There’s about 34 bowl games, 30 of which are sponsored in one way or the other,” Fox Business Network’s Jenna Lee said Jan. 2 on...

Take one part Norman Rockwell, add a dash of glitz and presto ... It's the perfect Beef Bowl recipe. A tradition for 53 years (older than 30 of the 34 actual bowl games), Lawry's hosts each of the Rose Bowl teams on consecutive nights for a pregame feast of prime rib, salad, mashed potatoes, creamed corn and apple pie. Cameras flash and video crews pass around mikes. The last two years, Illinois and Penn State players have come into the legendary Beverly Hills restaurant with their eyes as wide as the giant slabs of meat.

The regular season in college football has come to an end, wild and woolly as it was. Some would like to use it as a legitimate excuse for a playoff system, some modification for the BCS system, or just something to discuss on 3rd dates. Other people, like Norm Chow, have said (and I paraphrase) "I'm against a playoff system. I wouldn't have wanted to see our '84 (byU national championship) team have to prove it on the field." (In case you were wondering, yes, I have waited almost two weeks to post that). :) (One more parenthetical note: the...

First and foremost, I need to offer up a confession. The last time I spit out my bowl game predictions - they stunk. Those things reeked worse than LSU's and Texas Tech's defense combined. Bad. Awful. Sorry, even. But... the past is the past. THIS time, I think I got it right. (And I don't have any teams playing in more than one bowl!) So... without further ado... my updated bowl game projections for games played through November 22, 2008.
