Do you think it is appropriate for the GOP to raffle off a Glock 23 handgun in Pima County? Yes, No
-
A late August newsletter from the Pima County Republican Party plugged an upcoming raffle with a questionable prize: a Glock handgun, not unlike the one Jared Loughner used to kill six people and wound thirteen others, including Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, in January. "Get yourself a new Glock 23 .40 cal handgun for just 10 bucks — if your name is drawn. That's right, for just 10 dollars this gun could be yours," reads the announcement, which comes complete with a picture of the shiny, black gun. There's also a reminder to act now: "Tickets will go quick for this firearm!"...

(CNN) -- This week in Germantown, Maryland, it took less than a minute for a flash mob of teenagers to descend on a 7-Eleven, ransack shelves and make off with hundreds of dollars worth of stuff. It's going to take much longer for police in Montgomery County to figure out how to prevent it from happening again.

America's violent far right would have no difficulty recognizing the tell-tale signatures of Friday's killing spree in Norway — and not just because they would see the confessed perpetrator, Anders Behring Breivik, as an ideological soul mate who, like their own heroes, thought he could trigger a white-supremacist revolution with bombs and bullets. Breivik appears to have been more than simply inspired by American predecessors such as Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber: The materials he used, the way he planned and carried out his attacks, and his own writings all suggest he was deeply familiar with the actions of...

Four year old Aiden Mehlbauer was hit with a bullet in the stomach and died last Wednesday. Police say Aiden Mehlbauer and his twin brother, Mason were in the basement of their home playing around 4 p.m. that afternoon. The NYPD's reluctance to take the lead in seeking to ban sales of high- capacity gun magazines to civilians is a disappointment. As is Mayor Bloomberg's ambivalence to the notion. As we noted yesterday, the 30-round magazine that Jared Lee Loughner employed to create so much carnage last Saturday has no civilian utility. And Glock simply shouldn't be selling them. Period. Thus it makes perfect sense for the NYPD and other urban police departments to simply stop buying Glock sidearms until the company pulls them off the market.
-
Why Loughner -- who'd been rejected by the military for his past drug use and arrested on drug charges -- was free to buy a 30-round magazine is a mystery. Almost as much a mystery, frankly, as why Glock even markets them: They have no discernible civilian efficacy -- and damned little military utility. Yet sales of the magazines reportedly are way up around the country in the wake of the Tucson massacre. Here's an opportunity for the NYPD -- and every big-city police department in the nation -- to help turn this around by sending Glock a simple message:...

After a Glock-wielding gunman killed six people at a Tucson shopping center on Jan. 8, Greg Wolff, the owner of two Arizona gun shops, told his manager to get ready for a stampede of new customers. Wolff was right. Instead of hurting sales, the massacre had the $499 semi-automatic pistols -- popular with police, sport shooters and gangsters -- flying out the doors of his Glockmeister stores in Mesa and Phoenix. "We're at double our volume over what we usually do," Wolff said two days after the shooting spree that also left 14 wounded, including Democratic Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who...

Sales of semi-automatic Glock handguns have surged since Jared Loughner gunned down six and injured 14 more, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords on the weekend. According to Bloomberg, one-day sales of pistols in Arizona leapt 60% on January 10 - the Monday after the shooting, compared to the previous week. The owner of two Arizona gun shops told Bloomberg the store was "at double our volume over what we usually do.”

Giffords Shooter Jared Loughner Used a Glock 19 Posted on January 8, 2011 by Robert Farago The Washington Post is reporting that TTAG’s Brad Kozak was right to say the media was wrong when they rushed to report that Rep. Gabrielle Giffords shooter Jared Loughner used an “automatic rifle” to carry-out his heinous crime. As Brad and I discussed, mortality is limited when you spray a large group of people with a full-auto rifle. Accuracy is difficult as people tend to hit the deck pretty damn quick. Look at the often amazing lack of lethality of drive-by shootings. Loughner had...
