U.S. history courses at American colleges and universities downplay the nation's economic, military, and political history and dramatically overemphasize the role of race. So finds a new study by the Texas Association of Scholars (TAS) and Center for the Study of the Curriculum at the National Association of Scholars (NAS). The study focused on the University of Texas at Austin and Texas A&M as representative institutions because Texas law requires all students at public universities to take a year of American history and for universities to post course syllabi and faculty credentials online. The researchers found that many important topics...

Do you remember what the mainstream media mainly talked about as the country careened toward the fiscal cliff? Did they talk about the harmful economic effects of impending tax increases? Did they talk about which tax increases would be worse than others? Did they talk about the need to get rid of waste in government without causing economic harm? No. None of that. The taking heads and opinion writers focused like a laser on one and only one question: who was going to get the blame if we went over the cliff. Up next will be the debt ceiling deadline...

Editor's Note: This column was co-authored by Bob Morrison. President Obama will take the oath of office later this month “on a stack of Bibles,” the Washington Post tells us. He will place his left hand on Bibles owned by Abraham Lincoln and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Well, that’s a relief. Interestingly, not included in the stack is the Koran, about which Mr. Obama spoke so glowingly in Egypt four years ago. (No Bibles openly displayed there.) Now, swearing on a stack of Bibles ordinarily conveys seriousness of purpose and deeper commitment to carry through on the...

1) Guns for making all those poor innocent criminals break the law. 2) The old, dead white guys who founded America and their ridiculous, outdated Constitution that doesn't mention global warming or limits on soda size even once. 3) Nosy voters who ask questions like, "What kind of change?" and "Forward to where?" 4) Adorable little kids who want to run lemonade stands...WITHOUT A PERMIT! 5) The fact that Sarah Palin is the single best feminist role model in a generation while the Left's #1 feminist role model, Hillary Clinton, built her whole career around marrying the right guy. 6)...

While fellow conservatives bash the president for telling Speaker of the House John Boehner that the country doesn’t have a spending problem, I offer Barack Obama another thank-you. Just when I thought that the GOP’s own ineptitude was going to sink the party, the man-who-would-be-president proved once again that when it comes to being out of touch, you can’t get any better than the First Community Organizer. Led by Barack Obama and the Democrats, Congress passed a budget plan that doesn’t even do what they said it would- keep taxes lower for anyone not a millionaire or billionaire. So, now we...

If you see Kris Kristofferson around, please tell him thanks for writing the line "freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose" in his song "Me and Bobby McGee." That thought is sage and very appropriate for America in the year 2013. In California, Gov. Jerry Brown has signed into law an astounding 876 new mandates. They all took effect last week. Now, in the Golden State, you cannot do the following: --Hunt a bear using trained dogs. Untrained canines are OK, I guess. And how would the authorities be able to tell? Would the dog have to...

Yeah, he really said this: NBC's Ed Schultz Lies About Civilians Disarming Mass Shooters Where did he get this idea? Jack Coleman over at NewsBusters thinks the claim originated from a Mother Jones article written in the wake of the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, but Schultz doesn’t source the statement. The Mother Jones report states: “In the wake of the slaughters this summer at a Colorado movie theater and a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, we set out to track mass shootings in the United States over the last 30 years. We identified and analyzed 62 of them, and one striking...

Biggest snowstorm since 1992 pounds capital, paralyzing transportation and bringing more than 20 cm of precipitation. Thursday’s “storm of the decade” provided the requisite shots for the rare winter storm in Jerusalem: haredim praying at the Western Wall, snow clinging to their black hats. President Shimon Peres built a snowman, and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu was pummeled from the right and the left – with snowballs. But no one could have prepared Jerusalemites for the sheer amount of snow that fell early on Thursday morning. At the peak of the snow, children trampled through more than 20 centimeters of fresh...

HARTFORD -- Gov. Dannel P. Malloy wants thorough background checks on anyone buying any type of gun in Connecticut, expanding the law that now governs only handguns. Malloy said it may be the only way to create tighter gun controls in the face of powerful advocacy groups like the National Rifle Association. "Honestly, what do I really think? I think any time that you go buy a weapon, someone should check," Malloy said. As the General Assembly moves toward forming a task force next week for fast-tracking new gun-control legislation, Malloy said today that it just makes sense to require...

Boston Mayor Thomas M.
Menino says heÂ’s putting his full faith in Vice President Joe BidenÂ’s gun control task force to recommend a ban on assault weapons, require background checks for all firearms purchases and make new laws designed to push prosecution of gun-running rings. Menino, a fervent supporter of stronger gun control laws, told
the Herald heÂ’d hardly be disÂappointed if BidenÂ’s group, comÂÂ-
missioned in response to the school massacre in Newtown, Conn., comes out with a proposal simÂ-
ilar to the Biden-backed 1994
federal assault weapons ban. “Biden pushed the 1994 ban. Why not?” Menino said yesterday in a...

MONTPELIER, Ohio — Janitors at Montpelier Exempted Village Schools are equipped with brooms, sponges, and dustpans to keep classrooms, corridors, and bathrooms clean and tidy. Within the next several months, the custodial staff will be toting handguns as they carry out their daily duties in the school district buildings. In reaction to last month’s deadly shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, the board of education of this Williams County school district Wednesday night unanimously voted for four janitors to carry handguns on the K-12 campus. School officials say having armed personnel, which may be a first for...

Government forces in Mali say they have regained territory from Islamist militants following air strikes by the French military. Malian officials said they had taken back the strategic central town of Konna, which rebels had secured just a day earlier as they pushed south. The news came hours after France announced it had begun military operations in support of Mali's army. Armed groups, some linked to al-Qaeda, took control of northern Mali in April.

A campus safety conversation during a parent forum Thursday night at Union Hill School included talk of arming teachers to avoid a mass shooting such as the December tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn. .... Nevada County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Tim Werner personally advocated Thursday night in favor of arming teachers with guns to the approval of some nodding parents seated inside the school’s gymnasium. “Arming teachers is way above the pay grade, but I personally think it’s a great idea,” Werner said to an audience of about 50 attendees. “But there are education codes, which prohibit that...

President Barack Obama will deliver this year's State of the Union Address on February 12, which is the same day as Abraham Lincoln's birthday. "Our nation continues to face immense challenges, and the American people expect us to work together in the new year to find meaningful solutions," House speaker John Boehner writes in a letter to Obama, inviting him to deliver the address. "This will require a willingness to seek common ground as well as presidential leadership. For that reason, the Congress and the Nation would welcome an opportunity to hear your plan and specific solutions for addressing America’s...

Sen. Chuck Grassley, a conservative Republican from Iowa, suggested Friday he may be open to a limited form of gun control - restricting the size of gun magazines - if that legislation does not violate the Constitutional protection of gun rights. "I think that's a whole different issue and it can maybe be dealt with without violating the Second Amendment, but I want to see the legislation," Grassley told Iowa Public Television in an interview Friday. But he reaffirmed his opposition to reinstating the assault weapons ban that Congress passed in 1994. Asked if he would support limiting the capacity...

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Law enforcement officials will join families and activists Saturday to draw attention to gun violence outside an arms show at the Saratoga Springs City Center. Albany County District Attorney David Soares and Saratoga Springs Public Safety Commissioner Chris Mathiesen are among those expected to discuss solutions to gun violence at a "speak out" organized by MoveOn.org members. The event will cap a day of scheduled protests along Broadway. Starting at 10 a.m. outside the city center, members of Saratogians Against Gun Violence, led by Charlie Samuels, plan to hold cut-out angels and read the names of Americans...

America, Prepare For A Century Of Drought Rob WileJan. 11, 2013, 6:21 PM Corn and wheat prices surged today. The immediate reason appeared to be the year-end USDA report, that showed supplies were lower than projected. But concurrent with that report was the release of the Commerce Department's National Climate Assessment Development Advisory Committee National Climate Assessment survey. One of the findings: we can expect up to a century of drought. Here's a chart from the report projecting percent of the country in drought conditions in the coming years.Commerce/NOAA The red line is based on observed temperature and precipitation. The...
