After MSNBC's Chris Matthews bashed Barack Obama a few weeks ago for having "the worst kind of a notion of the presidency," people were wondering if the Hardball host no longer got a thrill up his leg for the Commander-in-Chief. The Rio Theatre is located in east Vancouver, so it is not surprising that yesterday morning the movie theatre opened to broadcast the inauguration of Barack Obama. It's also not surprising that over 300 people in this left-leaning part of town mostly filled the Rio, according to Ethan Baron's column in today's Province newspaper, to watch as Obama was sworn in. I was a little dismayed--but perhaps should not have been surprised, given the sort of coverage the new President has received in the U.S. press--to read this observation from Mr. Baron. Bobby Jackson, who in 1981 became Jersey City's first black city council president, died tonight after collapsing outside a rally for Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. Jackson collapsed at St. Peter's College and was rushed to Jersey City Medical Center at 6:23 p.m., authorities said. He was pronounced dead 10 minutes later, hospital spokesman John McKeegan said.
