MIRAMAR— Barney Brown was 13 years into his life sentence when parole officials in 1983 decided to give him a taste of freedom. But three months after he returned home, Brown was in trouble with the law again, according to parole records. Brown was arrested in Alachua County on June 19, 1983, less than a quarter-mile from a car that had been stolen the day before in Broward County, according to the records. The victim of that robbery was a Hollywood car salesman who reported two men stole the car, his wallet, a necklace and his 1976 World Series Ring.

Her wardrobe choices have been making headlines for all the wrong reasons. And now Michelle Obama has hit back at the critics who reacted with anger after she chose to wear a British design to a White House formal dinner. In an interview with Good Morning America, the First Lady insisted she will continue to dress in the clothes that make her comfortable - regardless of the label. She said: 'Look, women, wear what you love. 'That's all I can say. That's my motto. I wear what I like because...I gotta be in the dress, so...' Michelle dazzled at the...

The New York Yankees this year had a payroll of $206 million. The San Diego Padres had a payroll of $37 million — and neither team won its division. So who had the better year? I think it was Paul McCartney who once said, “I don’t care too much for money ‘cause money can’t buy you a World Series championship, although it can pretty consistently get you into the playoffs.” He’s right. Lance Berkman is making $14.5 million this year. That’s more than the combined salaries of the Indians’ entire starting lineup in their last game of the season —...

Also watching at home on television were at least five whistle-blowers who noted that the Reds were violating Ohio's indoor-smoking ban. They called Cincinnati's health department to report the team and now the Cincinnati Enquirer reports the club is under investigation.

The city of Cincinnati Health Department will investigate the Reds for a violation of the state smoking ban after members of the team were seen smoking cigars during the celebration of the team's playoff berth. A departmental spokesman told the Cincinnati Enquirer that five people called a hotline after members of the Reds were seen puffing on stogies handed out by team owner Bob Castellini. Castellini will be notified of the alleged violation via letter.

To some extent, Ed Miliband has spent much of the first 40 years of his life in the shadow of his older, better-known brother David, the former foreign secretary. During the leadership contest, both Miliband brothers made much of the fact they went to an ordinary North London comprehensive school. And while this is true, their childhood will probably have been a little more colourful, and certainly more intellectually stimulating, than that of the average North London schoolboy. Their father, Ralph, a Polish Jew who fled the Nazi invasion of Belgium in 1940, was one of the leading Marxist theorists...

On Saturday, the Cincinnati Reds celebrated the 25th anniversary of Pete Rose's 4,192d hit, which broke Ty Cobb's career hits record. Later that night, at a roast of Rose at a casino in Indiana, Rose broke down and cried as he made a heartfelt apology for his involvement in betting on baseball. "I disrespected the game of baseball," Rose said. "When you do that, you disrespect your teammates, the game and your family."
  • The One Man Who Can Stop Albert Pujols From Winning the Triple Crown (not Votto of Cincinnati)

During Monday night's St. Louis Cardinals loss to the last-place (and worst record in baseball) Pittsburgh Pirates, Albert Pujols was 3-for-5 with a double, raising his batting average to .322. I know this stat is not important to saber heads (please bear with us), but for this argument it is imperative. Meanwhile, on the west coast, Cincinnati's Joey Votto went 1-for-4 in a 13-5 drubbing by the now offensively resurgent San Francisco Giants. That effort dropped Votto's season average to .323, a single point above Pujols. With Pujols ahead in the National League in home runs (33) and RBI (92),...

Hey, better late than never. John Fay: The Reds have secured permission to honor Pete Rose on the 25th anniversary of him breaking Ty Cobb's all-time hit record. In an ironic twist, Rose's first official appearance on the field in Cincinnati since his ban from baseball for gambling in 1989 isn't likely to come on the actual anniversary of his greatest achievement as a player. Rose has commitments to Hollywood Casino in Lawrenceburg, Ind., on Sept. 11, which is 25 years to the day he passed Ty Cobb with hit No. 4,192. The Reds likely will move the celebration to...

NAIROBI, Kenya — Two explosions ripped through a park in Kenya's capital during a packed political rally late Sunday, killing five people and wounding 75, officials said. The rally was held to protest a draft constitution the country will vote on in August. The country's president and prime minister support it, but several prominent political leaders do not. Prime Minister Raila Odinga said that officials don't know the cause of the blasts but that they wounded 75 people. Dr. Charles Kabetu of Kenya's national hospital said five people had died. "I want to say clearly that the government will do...

Have you ever been to the Website of the Communist Party USA? It's worth studying, if only to compare the policy positions taken by the Communists with your own. Are you a fellow traveler? Are you a friend or ally of the left? Perhaps, up until now, you have been following the party line unwittingly. And what, pray tell, is the party line? "A better world is possible," says the Communist Party USA, "a world where people come before profits. That's socialism. That's our vision." The Communists also want us to support the elimination of America's nuclear arsenal through the...

A proposal to divide the United States into two countries I post this article with a sense of ambivalence, since, notwithstanding the author's boldness and originality of thought, his proposal presents grave practical difficulties which in my view he deals with only superficially. However, as I myself have said, with the passage of the health care bill America has now become in effect two mutually irreconcilable peoples (they want to impose unlimited state power on us, which we don't want to be imposed), and the only two logical resolutions to the conflict are that one side crush and dominate the...

OTTAWA—Security officials have scrubbed American right-winger Ann Coulter’s speech at the University of Ottawa after a boisterous protest prompted concerns for her safety. A spokesman for the group that organized the event said there were fears for Coulter’s well-being after about two thousand people gathered outside the venue to protest her presence there. Coulter is a darling of the U.S. right-wing who uses incendiary language to sell millions of books as well as her syndicated column. She sparked more controversy during a speech at University of Western Ontario Monday night when she told a 17-year-old Muslim student to “take a...
