MIRAMAR— Barney Brown was 13 years into his life sentence when parole officials in 1983 decided to give him a taste of freedom. But three months after he returned home, Brown was in trouble with the law again, according to parole records. Brown was arrested in Alachua County on June 19, 1983, less than a quarter-mile from a car that had been stolen the day before in Broward County, according to the records. The victim of that robbery was a Hollywood car salesman who reported two men stole the car, his wallet, a necklace and his 1976 World Series Ring.

DETROIT — Former Detroit Tigers manager Sparky Anderson has been placed in hospice care at his Thousands Oaks, Calif. home for complications resulting from dementia. The city of Cincinnati Health Department will investigate the Reds for a violation of the state smoking ban after members of the team were seen smoking cigars during the celebration of the team's playoff berth. A departmental spokesman told the Cincinnati Enquirer that five people called a hotline after members of the Reds were seen puffing on stogies handed out by team owner Bob Castellini. Castellini will be notified of the alleged violation via letter.
