Last summer, Rebecca Vance talked with her family about a dream she’d had: She wanted to live in a land disconnected from the world, which she viewed as chaotic and dangerous. She told her stepsister, Trevala Jara, that she could grow and gather her own food in a remote place, that she and her teenage son could be happy and safe away from the news, the viruses, the politics of modern-day America. “I’m going to worry about you,” Jara told her stepsister. But Vance was resolute. “I’m going to live off the land,” she replied. Her decision proved to be...

Snow is on tap for places such as Denver as the week progresses, but the Arctic cold that will accompany the winter precipitation is expected to be even more noteworthy. The cold might end up being even more notable than the snow itself, according to AccuWeather forecasters. Many locales could challenge record overnight lows and record low afternoon high temperatures late this week as Arctic air spills in from Canada. High temperatures from Idaho to northern Texas will be more reminiscent of overnight lows for this time of year as the mercury may reach only the teens to the upper 20s...

The Hartford Yard Goats are rewriting the lyrics to “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” after announcing earlier this month its Dunkin’ Donuts Park will be peanut-free. The Yard Goats, Double-A affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, are believed to be the first team to ban peanuts for an entire season. Peanuts are prevalent at baseball stadiums, making it difficult for children with peanut allergies to attend games. The Yard Goats held two peanut-free games last year where the park banned the item and did a deep clean of the stadium.

Colorado Rockies right-hander Chad Bettis is taking a break from baseball to undergo chemotherapy after discovering that his testicular cancer has spread. The Rockies said Bettis, who had a testicle removed Nov. 29, would undergo cancer treatment “over the next several weeks” in Arizona. There is no timetable for his return. Bettis said his oncologist found inflamed lymph nodes during a routine checkup last week and a biopsy showed “that my testicular cancer has unexpectedly spread, and I will begin a regimen of chemotherapy in the very near future.”

A Colorado man says he was kicked out of a baseball game after he tossed a home run ball back onto the field. Brandon Sanchez told KDVR that he, his wife and stepsons were enjoying the Colorado Rockies-San Francisco Giants game Tuesday night when the Giants hit a home run. The home run ball landed in Sanchez's hands. Although his stepsons were excited, Sanchez said he couldn't care less. “I threw the ball back just because it was San Francisco’s home run and I wanted the Story home run ball,” he said, referring to Rockies rookie shortstop Trevor Story. Moments...

MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Major League Baseball player Jose Reyes, the shortstop for the Colorado Rockies, was arrested on Halloween after allegedly assaulting his wife in their Maui hotel room, sources say. Reyes and his wife, Katherine, were allegedly arguing in their Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea room that afternoon. His wife told responding officers that Reyes grabbed her off the bed and shoved her. Sources say she also told police that he grabbed her throat and shoved her into the sliding glass balcony door. Security called police and Reyes was arrested for abuse of a family or household member....

WASHINGTON - As far as Molly Ryan knew, she was headed to Coors Field in Denver with her family to see the Rockies take on the Arizona Diamondbacks. Ryan's parents and her boyfriend, Kenny Lovelace, knew this was more than just a family outing. This was the night Lovelace was going to ask Ryan to become his wife. ... Ryan said "yes" and fans nearby cheered for the couple -- everyone but the older couple, that is. They continued to look unamused by the event. In fact, unbeknownst to Mullins, another woman who was there with them retrieved a security...

The fallout from Jason Biggs' misogynistic Tweets against the wives of the GOP presidential ticket reached a Mile High pitch today. The Colorado Rockies had planned to hold a "Nickelodeon Day" at Denver's Coors Field Sept. 23. That didn't sit well with some Colorado residents who were aghast that Biggs, who voices Leonardo in the upcoming Nickelodeon show "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," would say demeaning things about both Ann Romney and Janna Ryan. The Rockies franchise initially refused to bend to public pressure. Today, the baseball team listened to its fan base.

DENVER -- Jamie Moyer turned in a vintage performance in becoming the oldest pitcher to ever win a major league game. The 49-year-old Moyer threw seven masterful innings and Dexter Fowler hit a two-run homer, helping the Colorado Rockies hold on for a 5-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night. Moyer (1-2) was sharp all evening as he picked up his 268th career win, tying him with Hall of Famer Jim Palmer for 34th on the career list. Relying on a consistent cutter and mixing in a 78-mph fastball, the cunning lefty gave up just six hits...

For a generation American manufacturing has been widely seen as a “declining sport.” Yet its demise has been largely overplayed. Despite the many jobs this sector has lost in the past generation, manufacturing remains remarkably resilient, with a global market share similar to that of the 1970s. More recently, the U.S. industrial base has been on a powerful upswing, with employment climbing steadily since 2009. Boosted by productivity gains and higher costs in competitors, including China, U.S. manufacturing exports have grown at their fastest rate since the late 1980s. In 2011 American manufacturing continued to expand, while Germany, Japan and...

The late musician John Denver’s love of wilderness is driving an effort to name a peak on a prominent western Colorado mountain after him. But as it turns out, the peak’s location in a wilderness area poses a Rocky-Mountain-high obstacle to the undertaking’s success. Littleton resident J.P. McDaniel’s effort to get the eastern of the twin summits of Mount Sopris south of Carbondale named for Denver, who moved to the Aspen area as a young man, has drawn widespread media and online attention in recent weeks. The buzz has boosted McDaniel’s petition drive signatures by a couple thousand. It also...

DENVER -- A 27-year-old man who lost control while sliding down a railing at Coors Field during a Tuesday afternoon Rockies game has died, Denver police said. Police spokesman Sonny Jackson said the man was hospitalized in critical condition after falling about 20 feet onto concrete during the seventh inning of the opening game of a doubleheader. Jackson said that witnesses say the man was trying to slide down the staircase railing, lost his balance, fell and struck his head.

During Monday night's St. Louis Cardinals loss to the last-place (and worst record in baseball) Pittsburgh Pirates, Albert Pujols was 3-for-5 with a double, raising his batting average to .322. I know this stat is not important to saber heads (please bear with us), but for this argument it is imperative. Meanwhile, on the west coast, Cincinnati's Joey Votto went 1-for-4 in a 13-5 drubbing by the now offensively resurgent San Francisco Giants. That effort dropped Votto's season average to .323, a single point above Pujols. With Pujols ahead in the National League in home runs (33) and RBI (92),...

So I saw this scene, and I wondered -- can I find Ship Rock at this resolution? (Click the little picture to see the full-size 250m resolution image, which is about 5 MB, if that's a problem.) Turns out that I could. Can you? Here's Ship Rock from the ground; a place I'd like to visit someday. Likewise click for full-size. Now, here's another volcanic feature that's also in the image; on my last flight to the West Coast, I flew over it.
