Jockeys hint at Kentucky Derby boycott By BETH HARRIS, AP Sports Writer April 28, 2004 LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Jockeys John Velazquez and Jose Santos said Wednesday they might not ride in the Kentucky Derby if a federal judge bars them from wearing ads during the race. A group of jockeys challenged the state law banning them from wearing any advertising, promotional or cartoon symbols. The jockeys argued the law violates the First Amendment. In a second suit, the jockeys argued they should also be allowed to wear a patch with the name of their union, the 1,100-member Jockeys' Guild....

Dear Member, Thank you for contacting Blockbuster. Your inquiry asked about a possible sponsorship by BLOCKBUSTER for the upcoming Ronald Reagan mini-series on CBS. Please note that Blockbuster has nothing to do with that project, and we have no plans to advertise on the program. CBS is responsible for the development, production and broadcasting of the mini-series, and any comments you may have should be directed to CBS at audsvcs@cbs.com. We hope this answers the question you have raised, and we look forward to seeing you in one of our stores soon. Regards, Blockbuster Care --Original Message-- From: [pabianice] Date:...

Chevrolet and Hallmark (if the latter’s involvement was finally confirmed by the internet sleuths at forums like Free Republic) apparently got ... the ... message. They contacted executives at CBS, it seems, and pointed out that their commercial support of liberalism in America stops at the point where fifty million people announce that if they see those commercials they are going to cease buying their cars and their cards. There is these days, I am happy to report, a certain risk when a corporation decides to finance a “literary” version of a DNC campaign attack commercial. As storm winds blow...

In the ever-expanding universe of network, cable and satellite television, there is a similarly expanding need to compete, resulting in a growing number of programs described in terms ranging from edgy and racy, to sleazy and bordering on pornographic. Some shows, like the ABC police drama NYPD Blue, routinely include graphic language while other programs like Skin on the Fox Network and Nip/Tuck on the FX cable channel include sexual themes regarded as inappropriate for children. While such programming has resulted in complaints from consumers over the years, corporate advertisers and the companies that make media buying decisions for...

The head of a Washington, DC based media watchdog group is asking that advertisers demand to preview a planned CBS mini series on former President Ronald Reagan before sponsoring the program. Media Reasearch Center President L. Brent Bozell Tuesday sent a letter to each of the nations top 100 advertisers urging them to preview the movie before making a sponsorship decision because it is what Bozell called 'a partisan attack against one of Americas most beloved Presidents.'A review of the script by New York Times writer Jim Reutenberg noted the two part mini series, scheduled for later this month, makes...

CBS is in jeopardy of a cruel reality check that could and should cost some executives their jobs. The two-part miniseries that CBS apparently intends to run during the crucial November sweeps may well have the opposite effect of network programmers’ desire. Traditionally, networks try to walk the razor’s edge in offering programming that pushes the envelope while concurrently remaining ‘sensitive’ to those whom they offend. The ultimate objective is to acquire the largest audience. Audience, after all, is REALLY the product … not the program or the star. It is the audience that is sold to sponsors. Sponsors are...

http://www.cbs.com/info/user_services/fb_global_form.shtml I believe that it is important to not only explain our displeasure to cBS (required) but to politely explain that as many people as possible will be targeting... I mean, explain our displeasure with their sponsors. Write this to them. Maybe small, but if we find current sponsors, email them, and let cBS know that we will boycott their sponsors, and let their sponsors KNOW that we let cBS know, it may create friction between them. I find it doubtful that this will result in their pulling the flick, but we need to keep up the pressure.

A fellow FReeper posed an interesting legal question: "I'm not a lawyer, but it occurs to me that there may be another avenue for legal recourse and I'd like your opinion. Suppose the CEO of one of the sponsors of this slime attack learns that the program is controversial and could lead to a boycott of his product or service. Doesn't he have a fiduciary responsibility to the shareholders to assure that advertising expenditures support his business goals and not detract from them ? Could a shareholder's suit be brought ? If the company proceeds, could the FEC rule that...

Is there a sponsor list yet for this show? I’m sure they’d love to hear how people will respond if they are sponsoring a hit piece on President Reagan and his family. As I understand the libel and slander laws Reagan is a public figure as such in order to recover damages you have to prove that CBS, the Producers, etc knew the info was false and went ahead and recklessly with the false info. What can be done to maximize CBS's exposure to the Reagan’s and others successful libel case?

Schools consider business sponsors Strapped area districts looking at individual, corporate donors to raise funds Wednesday, October 22, 2003 BY PATTY MAHER News Staff Reporter It may not be too long before public school baseball games are "brought to you" by corporate sponsors, or plaques recognizing major individual donors are unveiled at ribbon cuttings for new public school buildings. School district officials say they are tired of federal and state budget reductions like the potential $200-per-student cut the state announced last week. They say they may start looking to private businesses and individuals to fill in the gaps. Dexter's board...

(Talon News) -- Anheuser-Busch, the brewer of Budweiser beer, is sponsoring a taped telephone ad urging voters to "vote NO on recall, YES on Bustamante." The speaker on the recording identifies himself as former Vice President Al Gore. First reported by Mickey Kaus on Slate.com, the message begins with the former vice president urging voters to vote no on the recall. "Gray Davis has been a solid progressive governor and deserves to finish out his term," Gore says in the telephone message. "We simply cannot let the right wing Republicans roll back the progress California has been making under Governor...

Reel Believer Beer companies keep hanging big bucks in front of pro fisherman Jimmy Houston, but he isn't about to take the bait. By Eric Tiansay Well-known fishing pro Jimmy Houston does believe in prayer, but the Baptist deacon says he didn't need to talk to God when faced with a career dilemma. Considered by many as America's most famous fisherman and host of the ESPN2 TV series Jimmy Houston Outdoors and Jimmy's Outdoor World, Houston was banned this year from top fishing prizes because he refused to wear a Busch beer apparel patch and refused to add the beer...

Bryant Takes Important Shot "He kept shaking his head, licking his lips, and working his jaw muscles against the grain of the moment. Kobe Bryant did not have the ball. He had the world's attention, but not the ball, when he measured his racing heart, his burning lungs and his leaking eyes before taking the biggest shot of his life. "I'm innocent," Bryant said Friday night. He said it four times. Bryant adjusted the news conference mike, faced the cameras, and swore he was only guilty of being a man. A weak, flawed, adulterous man. He stitched Hester Prynne's scarlet...

I am a young, conservative high-school sophomore who is very interested in politics. Both of my parents are registered democrats; in South NJ, you must be a democrat if you want to get something accomplished. I have recently found out about the Congressional Page program, and I am very interested in it. I understand that prospective candidates must have a Congressman or Senator sponsor them. My problem is finding sponsership; my Representative is a Democrat (Andrews), and so are both senators. Will my political affiliation kill my chances? If so, is there any other way for me to get sponsorship...

MSNBC is standing by Savage as some sponsors fleeBy Gail ShisterInquirer Columnist Despite national sponsors bailing, MSNBC says it's sticking with right-wing radio ranter Michael Savage. Procter & Gamble, Dell Computer Corp., Sharper Image, and three other national companies that sponsored Saturday's debut of Savage Nation have withdrawn from the show, MSNBC confirmed yesterday. The advertisers left because Savage's rhetoric doesn't meet their standards and commitment to diversity, according to statements from companies quoted on the Web site for the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). Still, the struggling cable network is "very comfortable" with Savage, "and we expect...
