Black lawmakers are urging black football recruits to reconsider playing for the University of South Carolina because the school may lose its lone African-American trustee. Top black state legislators said Wednesday that members of the black community are calling recruits. Black caucus chairman Rep. David Weeks says they should know some people in the state want black people to play sports but not serve as trustees. The flap involves an African-American board member whose election next month by the legislature is in doubt, according to the Associated Press. Leah B. Moody is up for re-election next month against Alton Hyatt,...

The next Tiger Woods? The next Lebron James? Everyone is always looking for the next phenom. And that's why you might want to learn the name David Sills. He is a seventh grader who just gave a verbal commitment to the University of Southern California to be their quarterback - in 2015. The six-foot-tall 13-year-old is a wunderkind in the eyes of his personal coach Steve Clarkson, who has mentored top college quarterbacks Jimmy Clausen and current USC star Matt Barkley. The shocking commitment of such a young player is more common in sports that are less physically demanding than...

Lane Kiffin will be the next USC coach, Rivals.com has confirmed. Kiffin will replace Pete Carroll, who left to take the Seattle Seahawks head coaching job. Kiffin coached Tennessee for one year, leading the Vols to a 7-6 record a trip to the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

Pete Carroll is off to the NFL He will meet today with USC players and then begin his transition back to pro football, where he last coached in 1999. I spoke with Carroll early this morning about his decision to leave USC and his new job with the Seattle Seahawks. On the possibility of landing what he considered a perfect NFL opportunity: “I had given up on it, but it came out of nowhere.” On whether he left because of possible NCAA sanctions: “Not in any way. Because I know where we stand. It’s just a process we have to...

Seattle Seahawks coach Jim Mora has been fired, the first coach in team history to be let go after one season, and league sources say longtime USC coach Pete Carroll is being targeted as Mora's replacement. Mora attended a meeting Friday morning with management, at which time he was told by Seahawks CEO Tod Leiweke that he did not win enough games to save his job. The Seahawks ended the season on a four-game losing streak to finish 5-11. Mora was shocked by his dismissal, believing that when he was called to Lieweke's office that he they would be in...

If the sign of a great artist is not what you can do with a brush, a palette and the French countryside, but with a set of finger paints, then consider Pete Carroll and Rick Neuheisel the second coming of Monet and Manet. Talk about impressionists. Carroll and Neuheisel took one of the most mundane games in a storied rivalry, one that for much of the country was played into the wee hours of Sunday morning and had nothing at stake except perhaps a berth in the Poinsettia Bowl, and made sure it wouldn't be forgotten. There were 17 penalties, five...

LOS ANGELES -- Malcolm Smith returned one of Southern California's three interceptions 62 yards for an early touchdown, and the Trojans (No. 20 ESPN/USA Today, No. 24 AP) regained their defensive pride while maintaining their city dominance with a 28-7 victory over UCLA on Saturday night. Matt Barkley's 48-yard touchdown pass to Damian Williams with 44 seconds left led to an ebullient USC celebration that nearly set off an all-out fight between the teams in their 79th crosstown showdown.

BRAVO STANFORD, you guys laid waste to the Trojans today, WELL DONE!

LOS ANGELES — Matt Barkley's first pass at USC went for minus-2 yards. His first four series with the Trojans resulted in two fumbles, two punts and a 3-0 deficit to San Jose State. A typical freshman quarterback surely would have tensed up at this burgeoning Coliseum calamity. Instead, Barkley showed why coach Pete Carroll insists there's nothing ordinary about his teenage starter — although the Trojans will find out a whole lot more next week at Ohio State. Barkley passed for 233 yards after a slow start to his USC debut, and the No. 4 Trojans' fleet of tailbacks...

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The second suspect in the hit-and-run crash that killed a USC student is out on jail. "At this point I do not understand our justice system," said Carmen Bachan, mother. Carmen Bachan is grieving and frustrated. Her 18-year-old daughter, Adrianna, was killed in a heinous hit-and-run. Fellow USC student Marcus Garfinkle was critically injured. Now just one of the suspect's who was just arrested is free on bail.

Katie Couric’s Curveballs & Softballs by: Malcolm A. Kline, April 22, 2009 The University of Southern California likes broadcast journalist Katie Couric’s pitches, provided that the CBS anchor lobs hardballs at conservatives and softballs at liberals. Specifically, Couric baited Alaska Governor Sarah Palin on her foreign policy experience when the Republican was John McCain’s running mate in his unsuccessful quest for the U. S. presidency. Couric’s colleagues lionized her for the exchange when they had previously dismissed the former Today anchor as a lightweight. Still, none questioned her failure, in an interview with Palin’s opposite number, then-U. S. Senator Joe...

Los Angeles, CA (AP) -- A man suspected of pulling a badly injured USC student off a car windshield after a deadly hit-and-run accident was arrested while trying to cross back into the United States from Mexico, police said Saturday. Josue (HOH'-sway) Luna, 32, of Los Angeles, was detained by federal agents at the San Ysidro border crossing at about 5:30 p.m. Friday after his name prompted a computer alert that he was wanted in Los Angeles, LAPD Officer April Harding said. Freedom of Speech is under attack by liberal America! Filmmaker John Ziegler went to USC during an award ceremony for Katie Couric’s interview of Sarah Palin to ask questions and offer a differing point of view regarding her performance. And speaking of the quality of this interview, it is unimaginable that anyone with any kind of journalistic talent could deem Ms. Couric’s handling of this interview worthy of an award.
