Hungarian archaeologist discovers tablet mentioning Masada's destroyer

In 73 CE, the Roman governor of Judea, Flavius Silva, laid siege to Masada with Legion X Fretensis. When the walls were broken down by a battering ram, the Romans found the fortress' defenders had set fire to all the structures and preferred mass suicide to captivity or defeat. Masada has since become part of Jewish mythology, as has the name Silva, who Josephus Flavius mentions in his writings. It is therefore no great surprise that Hungarian archaeologist Dr. Tibor Grull, studying in Israel three years ago, was excited to discover a stone tablet during a visit to the Temple Mount with a Latin inscription of the name of Masada's destroyer. Grull asked officials of the Waqf, the Muslim trust for the Temple Mount, where the tablet came from, and they explained it had been found in the large hole dug in the mount in 1999 when the entrance to Solomon's Stables was opened. The Hungarian archaeologist received rare permission to photograph and document the finding. In October 2005, Grull published the discovery in the journal of the W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research... Grull's photographs of the stone tablet are first being published in Haaretz. The five-line monumental inscription is 97 centimeters by 75 centimeters. The text itself is damaged. Barkai, relying on Grull, says the inscription is undoubtedly the dedication carved into a victory arch, and it includes the Latin word for "arch" ...says the inscription memorializes Flavius Silva, the conqueror of Masada and governor of Judea from 73 to 80 CE.

Excellent find. I am sure there are more that the Muslims are hiding and/or destroying.

The Waqf, which is opposed to archaeological digging on the Temple Mount, apparently has the tablet itself.

Sorry to keep asking these questions, but apparently organizing a webpage is very difficult. If http://www.freerepublic.com/~jedimasterpikachu/ is very disorganized on your screen, can you freepmail?

This stone, however, is placed accidentally upside down, so that the writing has to be read reversed. It would appear that formerly there stood on this spot a monument, to which this stone was affixed; and as it fell down at a later period, the Mahomedans found this large stone when they rebuilt or repaired the city and temple mount wall, and placed it in its present position in the clumsy manner we find it, without troubling themselves about the inscription.

Hadrian also caused a wall to be built around Jerusalem, and allowed no Jews to come even within the environs of the city (Lamen. 5:2). It was only at a later period that they were permitted to go to the surrounding mountains, probably the Mount of Olives, to cast a mournful, sorrowing look towards the seat of their ancient glory. Later yet, they purchased from the Greek and Roman garrison the permission to enter its precincts once a year, on the day of its destruction, the 9th of Ab (August), in order to weep there for their mournful fate, and the fall and dispersion of Israel.

Thank you for this interesting article.

To revisionist Islam I say... "Unless the Lord builds the house,
its builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city,
the watchmen stand guard in vain. Psalm 127:1

I expect that by this time the quote should read:

" The Waqf, which is opposed to archaeological digging on the Temple Mount, apparently has mysteriously lost the tablet itself.

What the hell is "CE"?

CE is Christian Era, as opposed to BC -- Before Christ.

I'm confused - BC is 'Before Christ'. AD is 'Anno Domini', or AD. Is CE the new AD?

And what's BC now - BCE?

I musta skipped school that day, 60 years ago................FRegards

C.E. is Common (or Christian, depending on the scholar) era, B.C.E. is Before Common (or, again, Christian) Era.

A little balm for non-Christian scholars, makes it easier for everyone to get passed the non-issues and talk about actual scholarship.
