The Lost Ship in the Desert: Sonora Desert
Desert Sun ^ | between 1996 and 2022 | Bob Difley

How could a ship come to rest on desert sands so far from salt water? One explanation holds that an exceptionally large tide from the Gulf of California may have collided with an exceptionally heavy runoff from the Colorado River at the delta, producing a flood which broke through the land barrier to the Salton Sea. The cresting waters could have carried a ship over the natural dam and down into the Salton Sea basin. The flood would have then retreated, leaving the vessel stranded.

I am not sure 'Civ. Could be.

When I read them through the 3rd time, I'll let you know. :-)

In googling around for a clue, I did find this info about the lost ship legend. It's been written about since the 1800s...

It is amazing all the info that's been written.

How did a campus police car (complete with flashing lights and a box of donuts on the seat) end up on top of MIT's Building 10 Great Dome?

I’ve looked for a few of these (not very hard. just hiked in the general areas). There’s darn good reasons they are lost treasures.

People *do* like a lost treasure story, particularly if there’s some kind of secret map or death clues or something like that involved. :^)

Read the book...it’s much better than gun-grabber Matthew McConaughey’s movie. The reason for the ironclad being in Africa was covered. When Cussler writes a book, you start reading and you go “What?”. But all is known by the end.

So this whole article is speculation about an idea for which they cite no evidence whatever? It reminds me of the ancient Christian writer Augustine. Asked to comment on what was apparently a debated topic of the time, namely whether creatures like centaurs and satyrs had souls, he opined that he would defer that whole question until it was established that said creatures actually existed.
