One way to judge the likely effectiveness of Chairman Lamar Smith's national mandatory E-Verify bill is the panic it has caused among the nation's biggest promoters of illegal immigration. They attack Rep. Smith's bill because they say it will take the incomes away from large swaths of America's illegal population. Well, I guess that's the point isn't it, because those incomes will now go to unemployed American citizens and legal immigrants who already are here.
The big pro-amnesty coalition called Reform Immigration FOR America screamed in its mass email:
Mass firings, mass deportations

PING
You really do need to plan on another Eric Holder in the mix so it will be necessary to keep the states in the enforcement loop.
Some have charged Smith with knowing that and in fact planning on a federal failure to enforce ~ thereby keeping his major donors well supplied with slave labor.
This is the bill reported to have been negotiated between Lamar Smith and the Chamber of Commerce. Earlier reports have said that it would preempt states from taking many of the legal actions included in most of the new laws now being passed in several states.
I hope pro-enforcement legislators take a hard look at this legislation because some think it will again gather most all immigration enforcement back to the feds who will not enforce immigration law as long as Obama is in power, so why would they enforce some federal requirement that all states use E-Verify?
E-Verify requires a complete data base be kept of every American, and for every American to get approval from the bureaucratic keepers of that list to work.
Our political "leaders" have failed to do their job, as per the Constitution, to protect the states from invasion. And in exchange for their dereliction of duty we're asked to give up our liberty. How far have we sunk when this is considered to be a good idea by those who call themselves conservative?
Sounds like good news for Americans.
YOU beat me to it and thank you very much Fed-Run E-Verify is very tickle me with a feather. IT MUST BE UNDER LOCAL/STATE CONTROL!!!!!!
Not sure if Grassley’s bill will trash recent SCOTUS victory or not. I am livid with NUMBERS FOR PUSHING THIS BILL!
Facetious argument ~ every employer already keeps such a data base FOR IRS as well as FOR THE STATE TAX PEOPLE.
PIK YUR POISON. gobbled up by illegals or one more data base....
Unfortunately, many anti-amnesty groups are ALSO panicking over it - because of concerns it will neuter tough states like AZ, while permitting the Feds to go soft on enforcement.
Isn't the E-Verify system already in place (though needing improvement) and utilizing the existing Social Security data base?
This isn’t an employer data base. It’s a federal data base of everyone who they say is qualified to work. If they don’t say you’re okay, no work.
In my opinion, the founders of this free republic would have been appalled at such a notion. It’s so far beyond the pale of what a free people should put up with that it’s almost beyond description.
Just what constitutional authority can you point to for such vast over-reaching power?
Yes, and it's riddled with errors.
It was sold as being voluntary. But some of us have pointed out the obvious all along: It was always meant to become mandatory.
I'd remind everyone too that the Social Security numbering system was sold to the American people with the oft-repeated promise that it would never be used for anything but Social Security. What a laugh.
If someone offers me two glasses of poison and tells me to pick one I always say, "no, thanks."
You’re much too concerned about government records, most of which have already been around for decades. There is no way to ever enforce immigration law without some records on all people in the US and some form of required ID.
The records and required IDs already exist and just need to be improved to provide more accurate verification of someone’s status in the US.
Here is the problem. Even if Obama doesn’t veto it, with Napolitano’s help, he will find a way to not enforce it.
Liberty-loving people will rue the day they perfect their "system." Mark my words.
Government records are a matter of life. Without them, it’s not possible to keep track of simple things like who is authorized to drive, who’s the legal owner of a given piece of property etc.
So long as there is a simple mechanism to correct the database being used (for example, show your US passport or birth certificate to prove you’re eligible to work), we should move forward with a sensible bill like this.
Driver’s records and property ownership records have never been the province of the national government. Those functions have been exercised at the state and county level.
Can you point me to any portion of the U.S. Constitution which empowers Congress to pass laws dictating who may or may not work?
