Media coverage of a public protest in front of Bishop Loverde's office might be an idea worth considering.

...probably after he demolishes any dissent on genuflecting during Holy Communion.
From the GIRM 2000, paragraph 160:

160 The priest then takes the paten or a vessel and goes to the communicants, who, as a rule, approach in a procession.

The faithful are not permitted to take up the consecrated bread or the sacred chalice themselves, and still less hand them on to one another. The faithful may communicate either standing or kneeling, as established by the Conference of Bishops. However, when they communicate standing, it is recommended that they make an appropriate gesture of reverence, to be laid down in the same norms, before receiving the Sacrament.

However, our pastor told us that we should bow our heads which is the "appropriate" sign of reverence before receiving Communion, instead of genuflecting (for the sake of unity).

Do you think Bishop Loverde fired him because the other bishops wanted Gould punished for his coverage on EWTN of the last USCCB debacle in Dallas?

I believe he was fired long before his coverage of the USCCB conference. I could be wrong. Can anyone else confirm this?

This story is quite distressing. Here are a few other items to consider:
"Bishop Paul Loverde (Arlington Diocese of Virginia) removed Vocations Director Fr. James Gould from his job. Loverde reportedly did so because Gould allegedly opposed allowing a man with a long history of homosexuality into the seminary. Bp. Loverde has not denied this report. Loverde also supported a homosexual 'civil rights' bill in Connecticut in 1991. That law allows homosexuals to adopt children and act as foster parents. The law 'also permits the state to impose quotas for homosexuals on employers,' reported RCF. Loverde is a bishop in 'good standing.'"

If these things are true, it is our recommendation that the parishioners of Arlington write to the Papal Nuncio in Washington D.C., and to the Vatican, requesting the removal of Bishop Paul Loverde; the restoration of Father Haley's right as a Catholic priest to offer mass and the sacraments; and a thorough independent investigation (not under the auspices of Bishop Loverde) into the allegations of homosexuality and other sexual perversions occurring in the rectories of the Arlington Diocese.

I will be writing a letter to Bishop Loverde concerning these scandals. I have already sent a letter to him concerning the horrible treatment Del. Richard Black received from Fr. Irace at St. Thomas More Cathedral. Del. Black, as you may recall, knelt to receive Communion but was denied reception by an irate Fr. Irace. I have yet to receive a response from Bishop Loverde. I won't hold my breath.

Now that the Republicans are in complete control, will they stop my tax dollars from going to this group that not only hates the unborn, but hates the GOP?

Not likely, especially when Republican leaders, like pro-abort Tom Davis, are willing to fund pro-abort Republican candidates, i.e., Rayes of Maine, who lost to a pro-life democrat (http://www.sunjournal.com/story.asp?slg=091502Abortion).

And read, ‘GOP warned to take it easy - Right-wing wish list cited as danger to party’ – Chicago Tribune (must register to read article - http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0211100503nov10.story). Here is an excerpt:

By Jill Zuckman Washington Bureau Published November 10, 2002

WASHINGTON -- Now that Republicans will control the House, Senate and White House, everyone from religious conservatives to anti-tax activists to business leaders has begun urging the GOP to push ahead on their pet causes, demanding results as a reward for their loyalty.

But some conservative activists and Republicans are worried that the pressure to quickly satisfy important but narrow GOP constituencies could result in political harm to their party and ultimately their cause.

The last thing the party needs looking toward the next election in 2004 is an extremist image that could prompt voters to turn back to the Democrats, they said…

I hope and pray that Bush does the right thing. We must put pressure on Republicans to defend their party’s platform:
That is why we say the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed... We oppose using public revenues for abortion and will not fund organizations which advocate it." - http://www.rnc.org/GOPInfo/Platform/2000platform4.htm

There is nothing in there that states that abortion is a "sacrament" to Wiccans.

    Hello kiltmaker,

Doing a quick search on “abortion” and “sacrament” led me to some excerpts from The Sacrament of Abortion by Ginette Paris:

"Artemis had a reputation for liking bloody sacrifices, including human ones ... a practice that has given paganism such a bad name.... The story of Artemis claiming Iphigena as a sacrifice can be told and understood in more than one way ... in one, Iphigenia is a victim, offered in sacrifice on the altar of Artemis; in the other Iphigenia becomes a heroine, and sacrifice takes on a different meaning. Since abortion is a kind of sacrifice, I believe an exploration of this myth may open up fresh avenues of thought." (p. 34)

"Our culture needs new rituals as well as laws to restore abortion to its sacred dimension, which is both terrible and necessary." (p. 92)

"Abortion is a sacrifice to Artemis. Abortion as a sacrament for the gift of life to remain pure." (p. 107)

    Source: http://www.forerunner.com/champion/X0004_Paris_Sacrament.html

It’s a mistake to make general statements about anyone’s beliefs so, would it be fairer to state that some, if not most Wiccans believe that abortion is a sacrament – you are, as a pro-life pagan, obviously an exception to this statement.

Since Tom Davis had no problems funding pro-abort Rayes, I too, am glad that the pro-life democrat won.
... Maine has a large number of independent voters, Davis said, while recently stumping for Raye in Auburn. “The choice issue, abortion, is huge up here. Michaud is contrary to his party on that. It’s going to cost him.” ... Read article here
BTW, my father, Frank Creel got 17% of the votes in his run for Congress against Tom Davis. Not too shabby for three months of campaigning, $5000, a handful of volunteers and no name recognition. For such an "uncompetitive" race, Davis spent a whopping $1.15M.

    Hello ffrancone,

In 5 days, if voters in Virginia's 11th Congressional District want a real conservative, they should vote for Frank Creel for Congress.

Democrats have not fielded a candidate for this race -- and why should they? Tom Davis is close enough to perfect for them. See my post (#26) above.

    Tom Davis (R-VA-11):
    • Voted NO on the pro-life "Mexico City Policy" which prohibits population assistance funds from being made available to foreign organizations that perform or promote abortions in foreign countries.
    • Voted YES on the DeLauro Amendment which would have allowed funds in the bill to be used to pay for abortions, or the administrative expenses in connection with any health plan under the Federal employees health benefit program which provides any benefits or coverage for abortions.
    • Voted YES on the proposed Lofgren Amendment to the Unborn Victims of Violence Act which would have provided punishments for persons who, while committing violent crimes, cause "interruption to the normal course of the pregnancy" -- but without recognizing the unborn child as a victim of the crime.
    • Voted YES on H.R. 2490 (7/15/99) which would have required taxpayers to indirectly pay for the cost of abortions performed on Federal employees, via their government-subsidized health insurance
    • Voted NO on the Coburn amendment which prohibits any funds to be used by the FDA for the testing, development, or approval (including approval of production, manufacturing, or distribution) of any drug for the chemical inducement of abortion.
    • Voted NO on the Istook amendment which requires parental consent before federally funded agencies (including Planned Parenthood) can dispense contraceptives to teenagers.
    • Voted NO on the amendment by Tom Coburn (R-OK) to prohibit the FDA from approving abortion-inducing drugs like RU-486.

Unfortunately, this is shameful but not surprising. My father has, for the most part, been snubbed by our local parishes. In fact, at several annual parish picnics, even though we weren't passing out literature, we were often told that "we'd rather not have you here at all" -- even at my own parish.

Since the House failed to pass the House of Worship Political Speech Protection Act, fear of losing that almighty "tax exempt status" will continue to keep most of our churches silent. In all the years I've lived in the Arlington Diocese, I have yet to hear anything even similar to this wonderful "Election Homily".

What is the significance of kneeling or standing during communion?

Phil 2:10 - that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth

If at the very name of Jesus "every knee should bow", then kneeling before Him makes perfect sense (at least for the @30% of Catholics who still believe Our Lord is present, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity in the Most Holy Eucharist).
