Obama amputates our nuclear arms

Under President Obama’s new policy, however, if the state that has just attacked us with biological or chemical weapons is “in compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty,” explained Gates, then “the U.S. pledges not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against it.”
Imagine the scenario: Hundreds of thousands are lying dead in the streets of Boston after a massive anthrax or nerve gas attack. The president immediately calls in the lawyers to determine whether the attacking state is in compliance with the NPT. If it turns out that the attacker is up-to-date with its latest IAEA inspections, well, it gets immunity from nuclear retaliation. (Our response is then restricted to bullets, bombs and other conventional munitions.)
However, if the lawyers tell the president that the attacking state is NPT noncompliant, we are free to blow the bastards to nuclear kingdom come.
This is quite insane. It’s like saying that if a terrorist deliberately uses his car to mow down a hundred people waiting at a bus stop, the decision as to whether he gets hanged or 100 hours of community service hinges entirely on whether his car had passed emissions inspections.
Apart from being morally bizarre, the Obama policy is strategically loopy. Does anyone believe that North Korea or Iran will be more persuaded to abjure nuclear weapons because they could then carry out a biological or chemical attack on the United States without fear of nuclear retaliation?
The naivete is stunning.

Fidel Castro, the dictator who came the closest in history to igniting a
nuclear war, made several public appearances recently to predict an imminent

Cuban TV, when the Israelis and their American cohorts provoke Iran in the
straits of Hormuz.

Fidel Castro has excellent reason to bask in the fond memory of impending
nuclear war. Waxing sentimental on his own role in the infamous Caban
Missile Crisis, Castro revealed to former Secretary of Defense Robert
McNamara in 1992: “Of course I knew the missiles were nuclear-armed. That’s
precisely why I urged Khrushchev to launch them. And of course Cuba would
have been utterly destroyed in the exchange.”
Castro was not alone in his longing for a nuclear conflagration. His fellow
Cuban revolutionaries, Che Guevara and bother Raul Castro, also expressed
the same desire for destruction:
“If the missiles had remained, we would have fired them against the very
heart of the U.S., including New York. The victory of socialism is well
worth millions of atomic victims.” (Che Guevara, November 1962.)
“My dream is to drop three atomic bombs on New York City.” (Raul Castro,
Nov. 1960.)

France declares war against al-Qaida

PARIS - France has declared war on al-Qaida, and matched its fighting words
with a first attack on a base camp of the terror network’s North African
branch, after the terror network killed a French aid worker it took hostage
in April.
The declaration and attack marked a shift in strategy for France, usually
discrete about its behind-the-scenes battle against terrorism.
“We are at war with al-Qaida,” Prime Minister Francois Fillon said Tuesday,
a day after President Nicolas Sarkozy announced the death of 78-year-old
hostage Michel Germaneau.
The humanitarian worker had been abducted April 20 or 22 in Niger by
al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb, and was later taken to Mali, officials
said.
The killers will “not go unpunished,” Sarkozy said in unusually strong
language, given France’s habit of employing quiet cooperation with its
regional allies - Mauritania, Mali, Niger and Algeria - in which the
al-Qaida franchise was spawned amid an Islamist insurgency.

Blast hits Japanese oil tanker near Oman

A Japanese oil tanker has been damaged by an explosion in the Strait of
Hormuz near Oman, causing a minor injury to one crew member.
Japanese officials say the blast might have been caused by an attack,
although piracy in the area is rare.
There are no reports of any oil leaking from the tanker, the M Star.
The Strait of Hormuz links the ports of oil-rich states such as Saudi Arabia
and Kuwait with export markets. It is operating normally, officials say.

Ship Damaged but No Oil Leak Near Mouth of Persian Gulf, U.S. Navy
Investigating Cause
(AP) An explosion, possibly caused by an attack, damaged an oil tanker
Wednesday near the mouth of the Persian Gulf, Japanese shipping company
Mitsui O.S.K. Lines said.
The company said the blast on its tanker M. Star caused one minor injury but
did not cause an oil leak.
The ship was damaged due to “an explosion from a suspected attack from the
outside” in the waters off Oman, near the strategically important Strait of
Hormuz, the company said.

Thanks, Ruth. I’ve been reading about this on another site. Some there are saying the tanker was hit by a freak wave caused by an earthquake. I checked the quake sheet and the last earthquake in Iran was four days ago, a little over a 4. magnitude.

Escalating Violence From the Animal Liberation Front

On July 22, special agents of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the FBI arrested Walter Bond in Denver and charged him with conducting the April 30 arson that destroyed a Glendale, Colo., business, the Sheepskin Factory, which sold a variety of sheepskin products. According to an affidavit completed by a special agent assigned to the Denver ATF field office, Bond used the nom de guerre, “ALF Lone Wolf” and boasted to a confidential informant that he not only torched the Sheepskin Factory but also was responsible for a June 5 fire at a leather factory in Salt Lake City and a July 3 fire at a restaurant in Sandy, Utah.
The Bond case serves as a reminder that activists with organizations such as the Animal Liberation Front (ALF) are still very active — indeed, there have been several firebombing attacks by such activists in the United States this year, not only at businesses but also at the homes of animal researchers. And there have been scores of animal rights-related attacks in other countries, with Mexico being among the most active. The Bond case also provides an opportunity to examine the manner in which the animal liberation movement conducts its leaderless resistance campaign, to draw lessons from the case and to assess the trajectory of the animal rights movement.
