Obama amputates our nuclear arms

Under President Obama’s new policy, however, if the state that has just attacked us with biological or chemical weapons is “in compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty,” explained Gates, then “the U.S. pledges not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against it.”
Imagine the scenario: Hundreds of thousands are lying dead in the streets of Boston after a massive anthrax or nerve gas attack. The president immediately calls in the lawyers to determine whether the attacking state is in compliance with the NPT. If it turns out that the attacker is up-to-date with its latest IAEA inspections, well, it gets immunity from nuclear retaliation. (Our response is then restricted to bullets, bombs and other conventional munitions.)
However, if the lawyers tell the president that the attacking state is NPT noncompliant, we are free to blow the bastards to nuclear kingdom come.
This is quite insane. It’s like saying that if a terrorist deliberately uses his car to mow down a hundred people waiting at a bus stop, the decision as to whether he gets hanged or 100 hours of community service hinges entirely on whether his car had passed emissions inspections.
Apart from being morally bizarre, the Obama policy is strategically loopy. Does anyone believe that North Korea or Iran will be more persuaded to abjure nuclear weapons because they could then carry out a biological or chemical attack on the United States without fear of nuclear retaliation?
The naivete is stunning.

Egypt is turning the screws on Hamas, with the reported arrest of one of the
organisation’s top security commanders in Gaza.
“Mohammed Khamis Dababesh, head of the Hamas-run General Security service
was arrested on his arrival in Cairo from Damascus late last week,” Egyptian
daily Al Ahram is reporting.
The news is being confirmed by reports in Gaza. Hamas is reportedly angry
and concerned by the news. As head of internal security he will know a lot
of secrets.

U.S. intelligence cites ‘three-way’ terror axis: Iran-North Korea-Syria
WASHINGTON - Despite growing reconciliation with the United States, Syria
was expected to maintain strategic relations with Iran and North Korea.
U.S. intelligence analysts said the regime of President Bashar Assad would
not sever or reduce ties with Iran or North Korea. The analysts said the
U.S. decision to return its ambassador to Damascus would not hamper Syria’s
military and nuclear program.
“The Syrians continue to make it crystal clear that they have no intention
of dropping their alliances,” Tony Badran, a research fellow at the
Foundation for Defense of Democracies, said.
In February 2010, Syria was reported to have received advanced military
technology from North Korea. The Japanese news agency Nikkei reported that
North Korea has helped Syria assemble a production line for maraging steel,
a key component for ballistic missiles, chemical warheads and gas
centrifuges.
“There is a three-way strategic relationship with Iran providing the
financing; North Korea and Teheran, the technology; and Syria the means for
weapons of mass destruction that Iran does not want found inside its
territory,” an intelligence analyst said.

Egypt sees Iran, Hamas behind terror network in Sinai
CAIRO - Egypt has determined that Iran was financing a Hamas-led insurgency
network in the Sinai Peninsula.
Egyptian sources said the intelligence community has concluded that Iran was
using Hamas as a proxy to organize an insurgency network in Sinai. They said
the network comprised of Bedouins, Palestinians and Israeli smugglers
directed to facilitate the shipment of Iranian weapons through Sinai to the
Gaza Strip.
“This clearly marks a new policy by Hamas,” an Egyptian source said.
[On Sept. 7, Egypt captured another shipment of surface-to-air missiles in
Sinai. Security sources said this marked the second SAM seizure in Sinai in
less than a week.]

At this point, the Egyptian sources said, Hamas’s military leadership was
believed to have approved the rocket strikes from Sinai. They said the
strikes were linked to Hamas military commander in Rafah, Raid Atar,
identified as directing the Sinai network.
The sources said Iran was working with Hamas to expand operations into Egypt
and Jordan. They said the effort was approved by Hamas military chief Ahmed
Jabari and the head of Hamas’s political bureau, Khaled Masha’al.
“Nothing is done without Jabari’s permission,” the source said.

U.S. intel: Al Qaida for the Arabian Peninsula has network in U.S.
WASHINGTON - Al Qaida’s network in the Gulf was believed to have established
a presence in the United States.
The U.S. intelligence community has assessed that Al Qaida in the Arabian
Peninsula has established a network in the United States. In a report, the
community was believed to have determined that the network could recruit
Americans for attacks in the United States and other countries.
“And, by working through its local allies, the group has now allowed them to
co-opt American citizens in the broader global Al Qaida battlefield,” the
Bipartisan Policy Center said. “Considering individual jihadist groups will
help illuminate trends about the changing threat faced by the Obama
administration.”
The report, based on interviews with scores of U.S. intelligence and other
officials, said AQAP was joined by other Al Qaida networks in the United
States. This was said to have included Al Qaida agents from Pakistan and
Somalia.
“Al Qaida and its Pakistani, Somali, and Yemeni allies arguably have been
able to accomplish the unthinkable - establishing at least an embryonic
terrorist recruitment, radicalization, and operational infrastructure in the
United States with effects both at home and abroad,” the report, titled
“Assessing the Terrorist Threat,” said.

A Northwest Side man has been charged with plotting to bomb a strip of crowded Wrigleyville night spots around the time people were leaving a Dave Matthews concert at the ballpark over the weekend.
Sami Samir Hassoun, 22, of the 4700 block of North Kedzie Avenue, was arrested as he placed a backpack containing what he thought were high-explosives in a trash can in front of Sluggers on Clark Street, about a block south of Wrigley Field, according to the FBI. (Read the federal complaint HERE.)
The bomb was a fake provided by an undercover federal agent. “At no time was the public in danger during this investigation,” the FBI said.
Houssoun had also discussed other violent plots in Chicago, including a biological attack on the city, poisoning Lake Michigan, attacking police officers, bombing the Willis Tower and assassinating Mayor Richard Daley, the FBI said.
But he is so far charged only with attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted use of an explosive device in connection with attempted bombing near Wrigley Field. The FBI said there was no indication any foreign or domestic terror group was connected to the plot.
“He was acting alone,” said Robert Grant, head of the FBI’s office in Chicago. “He was not, I would say, highly skilled but definitely desirous of finding the material he needed to carry out his attack.
“His intent was to kill as many people as he could in an area of town that was highly populated, in an effort to cause as much destruction as possible,” Grant said.
Hassoun, who is a Lebanese citizen and a permanent U.S. resident, told an “associate” in June that he wanted to commit acts of violence to make money and cause “political transformation in Chicago,” the FBI said.

Was Stuxnet Built to Attack Iran’s Nuclear Program?

A highly sophisticated computer worm that has spread through Iran, Indonesia
and India was built to destroy operations at one target: possibly Iran’s
Bushehr nuclear reactor.

That’s the emerging consensus of security experts who have examined the
Stuxnet worm. In recent weeks, they’ve broken the cryptographic code behind
the software and taken a look at how the worm operates in test environments.
Researchers studying the worm all agree that Stuxnet was built by a very
sophisticated and capable attacker — possibly a nation state — and it was
designed to destroy something big.
Though it was first developed more than a year ago, Stuxnet was discovered
in July 2010, when a Belarus-based security company discovered the worm on
computers belonging to an Iranian client. Since then it has been the subject
of ongoing study by security researchers who say they’ve never seen anything
like it before. Now, after months of private speculation, some of the
