Obama amputates our nuclear arms

By: Charles Krauthammer

...snippet...

Under President Obama’s new policy, however, if the state that has just attacked us with biological or chemical weapons is “in compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty,” explained Gates, then “the U.S. pledges not to use or threaten to use nuclear weapons against it.”

Imagine the scenario: Hundreds of thousands are lying dead in the streets of Boston after a massive anthrax or nerve gas attack. The president immediately calls in the lawyers to determine whether the attacking state is in compliance with the NPT. If it turns out that the attacker is up-to-date with its latest IAEA inspections, well, it gets immunity from nuclear retaliation. (Our response is then restricted to bullets, bombs and other conventional munitions.)

However, if the lawyers tell the president that the attacking state is NPT noncompliant, we are free to blow the bastards to nuclear kingdom come.

This is quite insane. It’s like saying that if a terrorist deliberately uses his car to mow down a hundred people waiting at a bus stop, the decision as to whether he gets hanged or 100 hours of community service hinges entirely on whether his car had passed emissions inspections.

Apart from being morally bizarre, the Obama policy is strategically loopy. Does anyone believe that North Korea or Iran will be more persuaded to abjure nuclear weapons because they could then carry out a biological or chemical attack on the United States without fear of nuclear retaliation?

The naivete is stunning.

For The Record - The IPT Blog

“Senators: Designate Pakistani Taliban a Foreign Terrorist Organization”
by IPT News • May 12, 2010 at 9:19 am

SNIPPET: “In the wake of the failed car bombing in Times Square, the State Department is pursuing avenues to blacklist the terrorist group behind the attack.

On Sunday, Attorney General Eric Holder announced that there was conclusive evidence that Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (Pakistani Taliban) was to blame for the attack carried out by Faisal Shahzad:

“We know that they helped facilitate it. We know that they probably helped finance it. And that he was working at their direction.””

SNIPPET: “Designating the Pakistani Taliban as an FTO would have the effect of making the group persona non grata in the international community—imposing severe travel and financial sanctions on members. It also would make it illegal to provide any assistance to the group.”

Afghan Constitution, Women’s Rights, and the TalibanResponsible for Equality And Liberty (R.E.A.L.)

http://www.realcourage.org/2010/05/afghan-constitution-and-taliban/

On May 12, 2010, in Washington DC, arguably the most powerful man in the world, United States President Barack Obama, publicly supported the efforts of Afghanistan President Karzai for reconciliation with those supporting the Taliban supremacist ideology.

The basis for such a planned surrender to defiance against supporters of the Taliban, which have been amongst the most notorious human rights violators in history, was based on two points:

*1. The Taliban are not all really the Taliban.* President Karzai and President Obama argue that many Taliban supporters do not support the Taliban ideology .

President Karzai states that “there are thousands of the Taliban who are not ideologically oriented,” and President Obama states that “the Taliban is a loose term for a wide range of different networks, groups, fighters, with different motivations.” In fact, the word “Taliban” means “students,” and many of their original recruits came from madrassas supporting their ideology.

CONTINUES.

TRAVEL WARNING [NIGER]
TRAVEL.STATE.GOV - United States Department of State - Bureau of Consular Affairs ^ | May 11, 2010 | n/a

SNIPPET - quote:

Travel Warning United States Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs Washington, DC 20520

This information is current as of today, Wed May 12 2010 23:23:37 GMT-0700 (PDT).

NIGER

May 11, 2010

The Department of State warns U.S. citizens of the risks of travel to Niger and recommends against all travel to the north of the country due to kidnapping threats against Westerners.

Al-Qaida in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), a terrorist group, continues its attempts to kidnap Westerners, including U.S. citizens in Niger, and has been successful in kidnapping Europeans in the region. On April 20, a French citizen was kidnapped by a group affiliated with AQIM in a location west of Agadez. In November 2009, heavily armed individuals attempted to kidnap U.S. embassy officials in Tahoua.

Due to these ongoing security threats, Embassy Niamey continues to restrict the travel of U.S. government employees and official visitors in areas north of Niamey, and warns U.S. citizens to exercise extreme caution and remain vigilant.

Although the U.S. government places the highest priority on the safe recovery of kidnapped U.S. citizens, it is U.S. policy not to make concessions to kidnappers.

All U.S. citizens residing or traveling in Niger are urged to register with the Department of State or the U.S. Embassy in Niamey through the State Department’s travel registration website.

Iran eases grip on al Qaeda

Adam Goldman and Matt Apuzzo ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) — Al Qaeda operatives who have been detained for years in Iran have been making their way quietly in and out of the country, raising the prospect that Iran is loosening its grip on the terror group so it can replenish its ranks, former and current U.S. intelligence officials say.

This movement could indicate that Iran is re-examining its murky relationship with al Qaeda at a time when the U.S. is stepping up drone attacks in Pakistan and weakening the group’s leadership. Any influx of manpower could hand al Qaeda a boost in morale and expertise and threaten to disrupt stability in the region.

U.S. officials say intelligence points to a worrisome increase in movement lately.

Details about al Qaeda’s movements and U.S. efforts to monitor them were outlined to the Associated Press in more than a dozen interviews with current and former intelligence and counterterrorism officials,

“Pakistani Terrorism Suspect Jailed In Chile”
WRITTEN BY STEVE ANDERSON
TUESDAY, 11 MAY 2010 11:48

SNIPPET: “A young Pakistani male studying in Chile was detected with traces of TNT while visiting the U.S. Embassy in Santiago on Monday to seek a work visa to the United Status.

Mohamed Saif Ur Rehman (28) has been living in Chile and studying hotel administration for the past four months. About 3 p.m. on Monday he went to the U.S. Embassy to seek work visa. But as he passed through security, an explosives detection devise sounded an alarm.

U.S. security agents then contacted Chilean police officials (Carabinerso) to confirm the existence of suspect residues on Saif ur Rehman. After Chilean police dogs also reacted positively to the smells on the man, Carabineros used their own special analytic devices to confirm possible weapons residues on the man’s hands, his bag, his cell phone and his documents.”

“Pakistani Terrorism Suspect In Chile Was Already Under Suspicion”
WRITTEN BY ALIA ALHAFNY
WEDNESDAY, 12 MAY 2010 23:24

“Mohammed Saif Ur Rehman Khan’s name was on Washington’s terrorist watch list”

SNIPPET: “U.S. officials confirmed Wednesday that Pakistani national and suspected terrorist Mohammed Saif Ur Rehman Khan – arrested Tuesday at the U.S. embassy in Chile after traces of TNT were detected on his belongings – was already on the United States’ radar.

U.S. State Department spokesman Phillip Crowley told La Tercera that the U.S. already had information on the suspect, who has been living in Chile for four months studying Spanish and Hotel Management.

Crowley said the young Pakistani had been invited to the embassy to clear up suspicions. Ur Rehman Khan, who had planned to return to the US (he had previously lived in Texas for three years), was about to have his U.S. visa revoked because of Washington’s fears about his activities. On his arrival to the embassy, traces of explosives were found on his clothes, bag, and cellphone. The traces of chemical residues were of a military-use explosive, it was reported.

The Pakistani has been working as a receptionist in a hotel in Santiago’s Providencia neighborhood since January, completing an internship. His resume stated that he was seeking to find a professional internship in tourism as a means of personal development. He received a degree in computer hardware engineering as well as languages (English and Urdu) from the University of Punjab, in Islamabad. He has also completed studies in Islamic ethics, economics, philosophy and astronomy. He reputedly comes from a well-off, well-known family in Pakistan.

Ur Rehman Khan could be found every Friday (the Muslim holy day) in Santiago’s As-Salam mosque, praying for close to four hours. Mosque spokesperson Mohammed Said Rumie said the suspect was introverted and didn’t interact with others at the mosque. “

Suspicious Incidents on VRE

May 13, 2010

The Post’s Jennifer Buske asked a VRE spokesman Thursday afternoon for more detail. Spokesman Mark Roeber said there was an incident of a black bag left by a passenger on a train, which was later claimed.

Other incidents involved suspicious behavior, he said.

snipped.

Original post: Virginia Railway Express just sent out an update in its Train Talk newsletter that warns riders that there have been ‘several incidents that have been suspicious in nature. As a result, please increase vigilance in watching activities onboard trains and near stations.’

Well, isn’t that just peachy... I think we’ve all figured this was coming for a while now. Wish I could find that article I read years ago about an interview with a man who lived in Israel (can’t recall who - was in a political publication)...

Anyway, he was giving tips on what Israelis do as far as emergency preparedness for one’s family if one is in an urban area likely to be targeted (and even if you aren’t).

He spoke about carrying water on your person, or in your bag. Also a clean handkerchief - to act as a filter for your lungs in case of smoke and debris. (poor water on handkerchief and hold it up to nose and mouth).

He also spoke of having a meeting place in the city if there is an attack and you get separated for whatever reason.

There were other recommendations, but I can’t recall them all now... I might have time to try and find it tomorrow morning.

“Obama was suspected target of Indonesian jihadists: expert”
Telly Nathalia
JAKARTA
Fri May 14, 2010 1:13am EDT

(Reuters) -

SNIPPET: “Police have arrested and killed several suspected jihadists during a series of raids across Indonesia since February when they discovered a militant training camp in the Sumatran province of Aceh.”

SNIPPET: “Mardigu said other suspected targets included President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, police officials, ministers, oil depots and electricity infrastructure, dams, and liberal Muslims, in order to destabilize the government.

“This we know from what they said and also we got from their laptops and documents. As for when, however, we do not know,” Mardigu said.

He added that the information was gathered mostly from documents taken during a series of raids in Solo this week, as well as in Jakarta, Medan, and Aceh in recent weeks.”

ON THE INTERNET:

WASHINGTON INSTITUTE.org (POLITCO): "Preparing for the Next Terrorist" by Matthew Levitt (SNIPPET: "Michael Downing, deputy chief for counterterrorism and criminal intelligence with the Los Angeles Police Department, has noted that while U.S. counterterrorism efforts have greatly improved when it comes to information about foreign terrorist threats, homeland intelligence collection "remains inadequate."") (May 10, 2010)

THREATS WATCH.org - RapidRecon - blog: "...in a World Defined by Jihad" by Jay Fraser (SNIPPET: "Fighting terrorism in the new World as defined by the jihad requires different thinking. Is it profiling to make it more difficult for people of certain suspect countries to become a naturalized American? Shahzad provides an answer to that one. Given the asymmetric threats and tactics employed by our enemies, our International & counterterrorism policies need to become more aggressive and proactive. It may not make everyone happy, but our peace and safety could well require the will to take "irregular steps" against known threats. A few final thoughts... "If you aren't pre-emptive, you could be pre-empted." So, a concern over political correctness could get a lot of Americans killed. Our Founding Fathers never contemplated having to deal with a Global Jihad. Lastly, as we learned in Times Square last weekend when Duane Jackson, a Vietnam veteran saw something and alerted law enforcement, if you see something that "Doesn't look right" report it.")
