The first largescale study of ancient DNA from early American people has confirmed the devastating impact of European colonisation on the Indigenous American populations of the time.
Led by the University of Adelaide's Australian Centre for Ancient DNA (ACAD), the researchers have reconstructed a genetic history of Indigenous American populations by looking directly into the DNA of 92 pre-Columbian mummies and skeletons, between 500 and 8600 years old.
Published today in Science Advances, the study reveals a striking absence of the pre-Columbian genetic lineages in modern Indigenous Americans; showing extinction of these lineages with the arrival of the Spaniards.
"Surprisingly, none of the genetic lineages we found in almost 100 ancient humans were present, or showed evidence of descendants, in today's Indigenous populations," says joint lead author Dr Bastien Llamas, Senior Research Associate with ACAD. "This separation appears to have been established as early as 9000 years ago and was completely unexpected, so we examined many demographic scenarios to try and explain the pattern."

The ancient genetic signals also provide a more precise timing of the first people entering the Americas--via the Beringian land bridge that connected Asia and the north-western tip of North America during the last Ice Age.
"Our genetic reconstruction confirms that the first Americans entered around 16,000 years ago via the Pacific coast, skirting around the massive ice sheets that blocked an inland corridor route which only opened much later," says Professor Alan Cooper, Director of ACAD. "They spread southward remarkably swiftly, reaching southern Chile by 14,600 years ago."

Amazing ...
Over the centuries, more Indians were killed by other tribes than the Europeans ever did.
Not really. What they are saying is that folks who died out 500 or so years ago didn’t leave modern ancestors
See? The Spanish arrival led to the total extinction of the genetic lines found in PreColumbian remains, and in 500 years is all — but this means that the ancestors of all PreColumbian populations entered the Americas across the Bering Strait 16K years ago, AND NOT BEFORE!!!
Ridiculous.
What it says is, in a few centuries, an entire population can be effectively erased from the surviving DNA pool — even though, obviously, they are descended from PreColumbian ancestors.
The same process eliminates most of each of our ancestors — we have 46 genetic family trees (at most; this is apart from unusual situations such as Down Syndrome)
Populations which were in the Americas prior to 16K years ago, or prior to the ingress of any new waves of people, could just as easily have been erased from the DNA of later people.

Oh, dear - those Naughty Europeans.
Again.
“Furthermore, Llamas says, ancient specimens that the researchers can extract DNA from are limited. In this study, most of the ancient individuals are from Bolivia, Chile, and Peru. So, he says, “there may have been some kind of bias in our sampling.”
As such, “The conclusions that we have drawn from this dataset may change in the future when we gather more data,” he says. “It's an ongoing story.”
Also, they studied only mitochondrial DNA, which is referenced only once, and not emphasized, at the Eureka link.
Here's the CSM link:
I have always been very skeptical that European diseases wiped out 90% of Native Americans.
The journalists at Eureka and CSM seem to be more concerned about supporting that politically correct hypothesis than about carefully interpreting the data from this recent study.
Holy sh8t, you’ve gone cynical.
and the photo of the girl mummy? She was a human sacrifice. Gosh, I wonder why her genetic line didn’t survive? It’s a freakin’ mystery... :’)
Just trying to show how surf music is part of the whole racist, imperialist, genocidal white privilege milieu. /s
:’) I’ve searched for years and have never found my modern ancestors. ;’)

How do you or anybody get people to actually care?
Tell them something they didn’t know?
They couldn’t care less.
Ask them why they “believe” or “ Feel” a certain way?
Good luck.
