Years ago, I'd post a quarterly thread asking Freepers what they were reading now. I made mention of the fact that I thought Freepers had to have been some of the more well-read people on the 'Net. I have decided to resume that post.
What are you reading? It can be a best seller, a trashy pulp novel, a biography - heck even a technical journal. Just don't answer the post by saying "I'm Reading This Thread". It lost its originality a really long long time ago.
I'll start. I'm reading a classic biography from 1970. It's called "Huey Long" by T Harry Williams. It's a large and very well-documented bio about one of the more controversial figures in American politics. The author did extensive research and it shows in the book. I'd highly recommend it - and I'm only about 1/4 of the way thru it.
Well, what are you reading now?
” With the Old Breed E. B. Sledge”
I’ll second that. The surprise is that he wrote it for his children, not for publication, but because they were curious to know what he had experienced in WWII. And now everyone who watched “The Pacific” knows.
” Empire and Nation, Forrest McDonald”
The great Forrest McDonald. Best conservative historian that there has ever been.
Next in my reading stack is The Autobigraphy of Maclolm X as told to Alex Haley. Looking forward to that one!
Enjoyed (several times) the Ender series!
“Explaining Postmodernism” by Stephen R.C. Hicks and “Dandelion Wine” by Ray Bradbury.
What Are You Reading Now?
My Oncology report and my will.
Laz? What’s going on?
The Art of the Deal and The Art of War.
Trump and Sun Tzu.
I just finished the Dark Tower series by Stephen King.
Thanks, I didnt know about that title from VDH. Will read that when I get a couple other things out of the way.
I assume youve read Carnage and Culture?
Thats long out of print, or was the last I looked. I read it probably 25 years ago. Good stuff.
Oh, and further on Churchill, I strongly recommend his war correspondent books, free from Project Gutenberg.
The River War: An Account of the Reconquest of the Sudan
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/4943
The Story of the Malakand Field Force: An Episode of Frontier War
http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/9404
Both cover colonial wars against Muslims in primitive conditions. Both are quick reads, as they were originally serial newspaper dispatches from the front. Both should have been required post-9/11 reading for our entire officer and NCO corps and the State Department, or at these the parts of it dealing with the Middle East.
Leckie, Robert; Challenge for the Pacific: Guadalcanal: The Turning Point of the War; Bantam, 2010 (Reprint edition).
Julian May’s Many-Colored Land tetrology.
The Spellsong Cycle books by L.E. Modesitt, Jr.
American Rifleman magazine from NRA
One Second After (for the umpteenth time :)
Next up: Empire by Scott Card
An Army at Dawn by Rick Atkinson
I am reading this article this instant. Otherwise, as far as a book,The Bible.
