Years ago, I'd post a quarterly thread asking Freepers what they were reading now. I made mention of the fact that I thought Freepers had to have been some of the more well-read people on the 'Net. I have decided to resume that post.
What are you reading? It can be a best seller, a trashy pulp novel, a biography - heck even a technical journal. Just don't answer the post by saying "I'm Reading This Thread". It lost its originality a really long long time ago.
I'll start. I'm reading a classic biography from 1970. It's called "Huey Long" by T Harry Williams. It's a large and very well-documented bio about one of the more controversial figures in American politics. The author did extensive research and it shows in the book. I'd highly recommend it - and I'm only about 1/4 of the way thru it.

I’ll second that. The surprise is that he wrote it for his children, not for publication, but because they were curious to know what he had experienced in WWII. And now everyone who watched “The Pacific” knows.

The great Forrest McDonald. Best conservative historian that there has ever been.
Next in my reading stack is The Autobigraphy of Maclolm X as told to Alex Haley. Looking forward to that one!

That’s long out of print, or was the last I looked. I read it probably 25 years ago. Good stuff.

Both cover colonial wars against Muslims in primitive conditions. Both are quick reads, as they were originally serial newspaper dispatches from the front. Both should have been required post-9/11 reading for our entire officer and NCO corps and the State Department, or at these the parts of it dealing with the Middle East.
