Congress May Bring Back The Draft
The Partisan ^ | Nick

On July 15, 2010, Democrat Charles Rangle introduced a piece of legislation into Congress that would basically reinstate the draft (compulsory military service). H.R. 5741 will give the President of the United States the power to require all American citizens between the ages of 18 and 42 to perform either military service or civilian service in the interests of "national defense and homeland security." It would also give him the power to require citizens to join the military during wartime to meet the manpower needs of the military.

In February 2009, President Barack Obama asked Congress to send him a bipartisan bill in favor of "national service." Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel outline a plan similar to H.R. 5741 in his book The Plan.

Under this new legislation, nearly every American will be forced into two years of military or security service. Even conscientious objectors will be unable to avoid this new draft. Instead, they would have to choose noncombatant or civilian service, which will be defined by the President.

Rep. Charles Rangel introduced a bill in Congress Tuesday to reinstate the military draft, saying fighting forces should more closely reflect the economic makeup of the nation.

Yeah that's one version of the verbiage he has used in the past. Another is along the lines that if rich white men have to send their kids off to war along with the people of color who can't get into college they'll be less likely to start wars or some such drivel....

The 18 - 24 age group is already losing that magical feeling, if this goes through it will be a full fledged Indian Uprising

it’ll be for Mr. Obama’s Civilian National Security Force.

Exactly right.. and I'm sure they have designs of putting our men and women under Interpol command as they try to enforce Fascist multiculturalism and flat earth environmentalism. The truth is the real leftist yearns for and would love to join a brown shirt squad.

No, Rangel will introduce a bill which if passed would bring back the draft. He's done this a number of times in past sessions, and the bill goes nowhere. This one will do the same.

Exactly. The military doesn't even have the machinations in place to deal with an army of conscripts. The entire process of how the military trains, motivates and leads soldiers would have to be retooled from the top down to deal effectively with legions of draftees that don't want to be there.

And would the military even want conscripts? Short answer, they don't. Even with an all-volunteer service, the military is today turning away prospective recruits. The ranks are full.

LOL

I once dated a girl that served the airforce. Her entire responsibility...YOU WILL NEVER GUESS.

She designed programs and invitations to retiring officer parties. Oh, and also weddings.

This bill is not a request born out of need, or even want, on the side of the military. It’s born out of jealousy and malice so Rangel can force “the rich kids” into the military.

And Rangel is going to find himself an "Army of One" trying to get this through congress.

It's never going to happen.

That’s a good take on it. A lot of common sense.

Rangel introduces this legislation every session. It never gets out of committee.

The only way this is going to work out is if it is a scam to get more people on the dole. As in acorn type community organizing disguised as a civilian military. Just another way to funnel more money to the underground marxist organizations.

What is wrong with bringing back the draft?

It’s the only thing Obama may do that’s right.

Or do you think the burden of defending America should fall on the same 0.3% of the population while the rest of us are at the mall?

Don’t be fooled by this. Your understanding of the draft is quite different than theirs..................

I still have mine. I even used it to buy beer once about 20 years ago one weekend when I couldn’t find my wallet. That was funny. I had to go through 4 people at the grocery store before I found someone that even knew what I was showing them.

The draft is another form of a tax. Dems will vote in the draft because they can push other forms of taxes any higher right now.

Yes. The volunteers. The patriots.

I would never want to serve with draftees. I enlisted the first time because I was young and full of stuff and vinegar. 18 years later, I re-enlisted after I lost a friend in the Pentagon crash. You remember that, it was September 11, 2001.

I didn't exactly volunteer the second time around as much as lawyer my way in, based on my age. I got my waiver, I got to serve.

Big difference between someone that feels like that, and someone forced at gunpoint to serve.

The problem with the draft is its involuntary. I support our troops 100% but I do not believe the gov. should force you to join the military.

I was drafted into the service and had to go to Vietnam and carry a rifle next to the DMZ (be a target). Why should my four kids be drafted now and go to a hell hole like Afghanistan to get their butts shot off for this President? Get us out of Afghanistan and get us a new President!
