FR Folding@Home Project Update - Sony Playstation 3 Makes Its Debut!
Fox News Technology ^ | 03/23/2007 | LOU KESTEN, Associated Press Writer

Posted on 03/23/2007 9:31:00 PM PDT by texas booster

_INTO THE FOLD: Despite all the criticism the PlayStation 3 has received, everyone acknowledges it's a powerful piece of hardware. Scientists at Stanford University want to harness that power while you're not using it to play "Virtual Fighter."

The researchers are studying the folding and misfolding of proteins, processes that may lead to diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and many kinds of cancer. It requires a lot of computing power to simulate the processes, so the Folding@home program has set up a global network of computers to handle the calculations.

By the end of this month, Internet-connected PS3 owners will be able to donate time on their machines to the Folding@home project. It's the first "distributed computing" project to take advantage of the PS3's zippy Cell processor, and Sony promises it won't be the last.

FOX News gives the Playstation 3 good marks for utilizing Folding@Home to help cure Alzheimer's, diabetes and cancer. Great publicity, great science.

If you have a PlayStation 3 that is not being gamed on 24 hours a day, please consider going to the Sony Store and downloading the program. Takes just a couple of minutes and you will be part of the reseach that may cure many diseases!

Use 36120 for the team number (FReepers) and your FReep name to start getting credit as the work units roll in.

And PLEASE post here if you have any problems at all.

Folding@Home FAQ for new users:

What is Folding@Home?
A Stanford University project to find out how proteins fold.

Why it's important: Proteins folding wrong causes all kinds of diseases, like Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and forms of cancer. Folding@Home uses novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. Through Folding@home, scientists now have the horsepower to study the mechanics of protein folding. With its ability to share the workload among hundred of thousands of computers economically, Folding@home can help scientists understand how proteins snap, or don't, into their predestined shapes - and may help to explain the origins of diseases such as Alzheimer's and apparently unrelated diseases. We're fueling research that could end all that.

How does it work?: You download a safe, tested program (see link below) that is certified by Stanford University. It gets work from Stanford, runs calculations using your spare computer power, and sends the results back to the University.

Is it safe? Yes! Folding@Home rarely effects computer performance in any way and won't compromise your privacy in any way. It only uses the computing power you aren't using so it doesn't slow down other programs.

How do I get started folding for Team FreeRepublic?:
1.) Download the folding program from Stanford University's folding download page (Folding@home Client Download). Type in your desired username.
2.) Type in 36120 for the team number. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT - if you get the number wrong, you won't be folding for team FreeRepublic!
3.) The third question asks, "Launch automatically at machine startup, installing this as a service?" - We recommend you answer YES. Otherwise you will have to manually start the program after every reboot.

How can my computer help? Even if they were given exclusive access to all of the world's supercomputers, Stanford still wouldn't have as much processing power as they get from the supercluster of people's desktop systems Folding@home relies on. Modern supercomputers are essentially a cluster of hundreds of processors linked by fast networking. But Stanford needed the power of hundreds of thousands of processors, not just hundreds.

There's no reason to not get involved! It's free, easy, and you can know you're helping every minute without lifting a finger.

working on p3040_supervillin-03 GROMACS core

I have been down for a while (my laptop was stolen while I was @ school). Not a real bad thing because I needed a new one anyway and bonus... my car insurance paid for it!

By the way, I bought a new PC and networked my two old ones and put them in my kids rooms. Can I load the folding program into all three of them and use the same user name, or do I need a new one for each computer?

No, use the same team number and name for each system.

When you look at the charts you will see that some of us have a dozen computers folding away. That's how we do it.

You can even us an old folding name if you want to keep the old points.

Not far from the magic petaFLOP barrier, at 4:40 am CST 3/25/07.

It is amazing that 32,000 PS3s are already crunching away. While the PS3 doesn't solve all of the calculations required to fold a protein, it does run the Implicit Water Molecule Solvents amazingly fast.

This stat page compares system throughput and tries to match it up to the supercomputer standard of TFLOPS. It is a comparison that started years ago and is correct in terms of CPU cycles, but not necessarily in terms of effective work completed.

Think of it comparing AMD chips to Intel chips to Cell processors. It is really a marketing concept - all the new chips are really fast.

The last column is the number of systems that have been registered with F@H, at any time in the past. If you have upgraded your system then you have an orphan in that pile.

The middle column is the active CPUs reporting in the last 50 days (less for PS3s and GPUs). The current number is:

Windows .....................153.......160899
PLAYSTATION®3......726.........29618

Keep in mind that the PS3, because of its limited memory, can only fold certain molecules in specific ways. Because the Sony engineers have customized the folding to the strengths of the Cell processor the PS3 folds the molecules that it gets REALLY fast.

Also, the 160,000 Windows systems include everything from a few Windows 95 systems up to the newest bank-busting Quad core Intels. F@H needs the general purpose CPUs to do calculations of a different type than the PS3 or the GPU.

What is your folding name? Also make sure that your team is set to 36120.

It usually takes 8 - 12 hours to complete a work unit, than another 2 - 6 hours to scrub the work unit data and verify the results.

Uploads happen to the stats page every three hours. Look here:

http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/user_list.php?s=&a=2&t=36120

and here:

http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/main.py?qtype=teampage&teamnum=36120

and here:

So far the only new user has been nerdwithamachine who posted his first WU earlier today.

My folding name is the same as my Freeper ID - LanPB01. My PS3 currently shows the running process should be done in about eight hours, and I've entered the proper team number.

Do you have any information on how safe it is to leave the PS3 running for long periods of time? It's my understanding it should be as safe as running a computer, but I haven't found any definitive source for the information.

The PS3 draws about 180 watts when idle, and about 205 watts when folding. During testing for the F@H PS3 beta testers left some consoles on, running F@H, in a closed cabinet for months. No consoles died from overheating at all.

If your electricity is clean then you will have no problems.

There is a procedure to make sure F@H restarts when you restart the console. I'll find it and post it.

To: LanPB01

As long as Zone Alarm allows F@H to access the Stanford servers occasionally then there is no conflict.

Check the processes under the Task Manager. F@H should hog 100% of the CPU cycles unless you set it lower. Zone Alarm should not use any cycles except when scanning.

If you are running the GUI version of F@H, then you will see a little red flower in the system tray. Right click, go to properties and you will be able to adjust the CPU usage with the slider bar in one of the tabs. Drop it down to 75% or 85%.

If you have the console version we have a bit more work to do. You will need to stop the service, then adjust the properties from a command line.

If you have the console version then FReepmail me.

Hey, the updated home page looks great! Just remember to update every now and then as you advance up the charts.

Nerd, you can change the name of your one folding machine to nerdwithamachinegun and just orphan those points. You'll enjoy having a few systems pop in points on a regular basis.

I can't change the short (nerdwithamachine) as it is my PS3.
They capped the string length.
