Did We Fix Something That Was Not Broke?(FR)

Why all of a sudden am I loading the Latest articles page?

It used to be clicking on messages in the upper right corner solved the problem. Now, I finally found "Comments" down the right side a bit, but every time ya hit browse now coming out of a thread, I return to latest articles page!

WWWWWHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTZZZZZZZZZ - UUUUP!!??!!!

I have discussed with John Robinson at length about it and he feels handcuffed because of the vocal minority refusing to accept even convenience changes

I have no doubt that upgrading needs to be done. But to change or become the norm as to what others are doing isn’t always the best.

I look at the posted articles pages once in a while. But my basic operating preference on FR is using the latest comments page. The old way you could get on it and refresh it as you wanted. Now you get on it and refresh it and it goes back to the articles pages. Then you have to select comments and let that reload.

The simple solution is to allow those that like to use the latest coments page and refresh it without having to go back to the articles page is to allow a ‘tag’ or whatever is necessary to accomplish that....

Is that unreasonable?

I don't mind changes if they improve functionality. But how about a little advance notice, and some sort FAQ or other documentation on what to expect and why the changes etc.

I think that's probably the biggest complaint. Wake up, and while waiting on coffee, check FR to see what's happened overnight, and things are all changed around.

It's very confusing when your eyes are half open and your brain is looking for its caffeine jolt.

Here's a new one.....I clicked on a thread that's up now titled "Obama Heals Hundreds"".

Seeking to post one of my usual pithy comments, I saw there was no "reply" box. Only "report abuse" and "bookmark". So the Freeper Kingdom is tragically diminished by my not being able to post a comment.

As far as the poster above who said he's loading ok now, he's lucky. Loading is so slow for me that I'm cutting out now and will be back periodically to see if there's any improvement. No time on a Sunday for patience games.

I just mean from navigation. Its all over the board. I think half the design is just to save bandwidth when that shouldnt be much of a problem these days. Very 1999 thinking. So many options out there for chaching optimization. Though I know next to nothing with perl which is what FR is written in.

Can you cite the specific improvements we’re seeing this morning? I mean, those we’re seeing when the server doesn’t time out?

Let’s put it this way. If a hacker broke into the FR software and wanted to piss off every member, make the forum largely unusable, and send everyone to church instead of putting up with a mess, a hacker would have done this.

All that’s missing is the porn.

Looks like a change to a tag centric method of displaying "forums". Making it more dynamic perhaps? Personally, no changes are worth it until they redesign the whole top area.

I think this change was meant for infrastructure and John threw caution to the wind. Looks like the change is causing some unexpected technical issues.

Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.

The proxy server could not handle the request GET /tag/articles:latest/.

Reason: Error reading from remote server

Yep, things are going great right now.

Yep, for me to now but that wasn’t how it was earlier..... The fix got implemented. I knew it shouldn’t take much as if you can fix it to stay on ‘latest articles or active articles’ then you can fix it to stay with ‘latest comments’ when you refresh....

It will take a little while to get the operation back to a smooth state.

Found it:

Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request GET /tag/articles:latest/.

Reason: Error reading from remote server

My Entry Link for FR has been Free Republic | latest articles -- but now that gives the above Proxy error, and instead puts this address:- http://www.freerepublic.com/tag/articles:latest/ into the Address Bar.

Plus the Side Bar Links open in the 'Same' window instead of a 'Slave' under that link.

Change gives me agita!!

Rumor has it, John Robinson years ago, started out with a slighlty stripper down and modified guest book. Over the years, changes here and there and a few beta's threw in the mix, they have themselves a unique setup here. Many have tried to copy, but most choose the forum hosting formats out there.

There is just something about writing your own code that drives some. Although not very active, I wrote my own code, takin from the likes of FR about 8 years ago... I recently put it back up. It works well for a rookie programmers first attempt!
