Shock: First Animal on Earth Was Surprisingly Complex
Yahoo! ^ | Thursday, April 10, 2008 | LiveScience

Earth's first animal was the ocean-drifting comb jelly, not the simple sponge, according to a new find that has shocked scientists who didn't imagine the earliest critter could be so complex... scientists analyzed massive volumes of genetic data to define the earliest splits at the base of the animal tree of life... The new study surprisingly found that the comb jelly was the first animal to diverge from the base of the tree, not the less complex sponge, which had previously been given the honor... Unlike sponges, comb jellies have connective tissues and a nervous system, and so are more complex. Though squishy and tentacled, they are not, however, true jellyfish as they lack the classic bell-shaped body and characteristic stinging cells. The finding was unexpected because evolutionary biologists had thought that less complex animals split off and evolved separately first... "evolution is not necessarily just a march towards increased complexity," Dunn said.

Yes, I would consider Adam a complex entity. ;-)

Adam was the last of God's creations.

Sea creatures were the first animals according to Genesis 1:20.

20 And God said, "Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky."

21 So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

22 God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth." 23 And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

Comb jelly? Honeycomb! I mean, Horsefeathers! What a hive mind. I'd bee in a jam if this was the best I could do to brush away competing theories. Some of us actually work and don't sponge off taxpayers by publishing such calumnies.

“Adam was the last of God’s creations.”

I thought Eve was.

you offer no evidence beyond the authority of an old book that doesn’t even mention that germs cause disease.

I guess it depends on your perspective.

God spoke everything but Adam into existence. He formed Adam from the dirt with His hands and breathed His breath into Adam's nostrils. Eve was taken from Adam's flesh. I'm not sure about Adam but Eve was not exactly "created."

We might have learned something new we didn't know before.

It contradicts what we thought we knew before.

It probably happened yesterday, too.

It could very well happen again tomorrow.

Maybe to this.

the authority of an old book that doesn’t even mention that germs cause disease.

There is a passage in the Old Testament that promised the Israelites that if they abstained from eating swine, etc. etc. they would have NONE OF THESE DISEASES suffered by neighboring pagans.

There is a book by the title as well. I encourage you to get better acquainted with that Old Book, and especially its Author. (Free Bonus: In Job and in Proverbs are references to the earth being sperical.)

“you offer no evidence beyond the authority of an old book that doesn’t even mention that germs cause disease.”

There is a good joke about the typical evolutionary scientist. They studied hard and finally felt they could create life so they challenged God. Telling him they were as powerful as he and could create life out of dirt. So God told the scientist to show him.

The scientist picked up a handful and dirt and proceeded with his process. God stopped him and said “get your own dirt”.

The point is the universe is more complex than we can imagine. Yet we believe some scientist who gets lost driving across town when they say they understand it all. Hogwash.

I just spoke with the sponge. He’s ok with it.

The comb jelly is really happy to have found such a prominent place in mans understanding of science 2008.

But somehow I think the sponge isn’t revealing all of his inner feelings about this experience, but I’m glad at least publicly he is able to let comb jelly have his day in the sun.

No, the first “animal” evolved from life that was not an animal.

Out of curiosity, how do they know what the first animal was?

I think what might be troubling him is the part about the “simple sponge”.

Since when was he relegated to being plain old “simple”?

Why didn’t all monkeys evolve into human beings?

Answer:
Obviously, some of those monkeys didn’t read Darwin’s book.

>> you offer no evidence beyond the authority of an old book that doesn’t even mention that germs cause disease.

Look up the definition of “disease”.

Germs are not the only cause of human dis-ease (or “disease”, if you prefer), by a LONG shot.

And that only touches on physical disease. Spiritual disease is yet another matter, and even more important.

And once this first honor was bestowed, who has the authority to take it away, just like that?

‘I guess it depends on your perspective.” I don’t really have a perspective, I just read whats in the bible.

Genesis 1;27 NIV
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him;male and female he created them.

2;19 But for Adam [g] no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs [h] and closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib [i] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

“I’m not sure about Adam but Eve was not exactly “created.””

She didn’t exist, God did something, then she did exist. Sounds like God created Eve to me.

Perhaps Eve was a rogue evolutionists lab experiment gone awry? /sarc

I’ll be talking to sponge again soon. Hopefully I’ll be able to calm him back down. But I won’t be mentioning comb jelly to him anytime soon.
