Newby asks "Ping to 'All'"?

Posted on 06/19/2008 4:45:14 PM PDT by Uncle Ralph

In the 'pings' set in some comments, besides the expected member names, I have seen the word 'All'. Does that 'ping' the message to everyone who already left a comment on that thread? How about those who comment after? And are there other 'special' words, besides 'All'?

Thanks.

Some of us all just had dinner.

Now after dinner drinks are required.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that...

In my family, the running shoes would have to be on the feet first before posting.

And now the F-word:
“Fie!” (pronounced “fy”) is a VERY useful word. A general expression of disgust.
Some examples:
“Oh, Fie!”
“Fie and fie again!”
“Fie upon it!” or “Fie upon that!” or “Fie upon you!”
(They didn’t say “Fie you” though, sorry.)

“Tush!” Used alone (unlike Fie above). Sort of a mild exclamation.
“Tush, sir! Surely you jest!”

“Go to!” Period exclamation often used the way we would answer an astonishing statement from a friend: “Get outta here! Really?”
Example: “The king is coming to this dungheap? Go to!”

I would encourage everyone to pick one they enjoy and get in the habit of saying it. It can become quite automatic after awhile. I use “God’s Teeth” a lot. God’s Teeth! This heat is killing me!”

Does that 'ping' the message to everyone who already left a comment on that thread?

That's a good question! I've been under the impression that it automatically pinged all the folks who had replied on that thread.

Maybe now I'll get an answer to my unasked question...........

When in doubt, do a keyword search on the word lore.

Select the The 2007 FreeRepublic Lexicon (Lingo, Dictionary, Lore Handbook) and all your questions will be answered and then some. The Lexicon committee is waaaaaaaay behind this year.

Or click the links above to read right now! Targets open in a separate window for your viewing pleasure.

Its a lot easier now, but back in the old days, when I joined FR, you first had to lurk for 3 months, then pass a written test, before you were given posting privileges

Y’know, I’m not surprised that one might have the David Hasselhoff animation. What is somehow disturbing that one should have it so near at hand as to be able to post it so quickly ;-)

SPeaking of lore, this bit is a staple of any David Hasselhoff reference. Must reading.

Back in the early days of this forum "all" meant "to everyone on the thread".

We are reduce to discuss “All” since the AP is off limits. This place is getting boring.

I think there should be a “Newby Asks” series, or archive. This is healthy.
