Astronomy Picture of the Day -- All the Water on Planet Earth
NASA ^ | May 15, 2012 | (see photo credit)

Posted on 05/15/2012 4:39:34 AM PDT by SunkenCiv

Explanation: How much of planet Earth is made of water? Very little, actually. Although oceans of water cover about 70 percent of Earth's surface, these oceans are shallow compared to the Earth's radius. The above illustration shows what would happen is all of the water on or near the surface of the Earth were bunched up into a ball. The radius of this ball would be only about 700 kilometers, less than half the radius of the Earth's Moon, but slightly larger than Saturn's moon Rhea which, like many moons in our outer Solar System, is mostly water ice. How even this much water came to be on the Earth and whether any significant amount is trapped far beneath Earth's surface remain topics of research.

Alright folks, time to put the water back. It’s hurting tourism on beachfronts.

There’s a subterranean sea of sorts somewhere under the Himalayas (for one example); the amount of water pumped by humans — throughout history — doesn’t amount to much.

And as ngat implied, it’s probably meme-building about fracking.

You might enjoy this contrast, then, between your Michigan and Southern California: in all of SoCal, there is exactly one natural lake: Lake Elsinore. All the others were created by man-made catastrophes (Salton Sea) or dams.

If the world’s population was dumped into the middle of the ocean at once, would there be enough displacement to cause a notable rise in the sea level?

No, because you could take the entire population of the world and if they all stood side by side and in a tight ball where all their arms are locked together, they would fit in the city limits of Jacksonville Florida.

So you may get a splash, and some high waves along the shorelines but not much more.

Yer probly right. I’ve been a machinist/engineer all my days so ball bearings being as smooth as possible is the best. You pay really top dollar for for good ones.

Posted this on the other thread:

Their calculations are wrong. The volume of water on the plant which includes all the the water on the earth and in the atmosphere comes out to 1,400,000,000 km^3 which would make a sphere approximately 1400 km in diameter which is twice as large as they show in the pic.

Just most crap out of NASA. They need to go away
