Scottish people's DNA study could 'rewrite nation's history'

Evidence of African, Arabian, south-east Asian and Siberian ancestry in Scotland, says author of book tracing genetic journey

A large scale study of Scottish people's DNA is threatening to "rewrite the nation's history", according to author Alistair Moffat.

Scotland, he told the Edinburgh international book festival, despite a long-held belief that its ethnic make-up was largely Scots, Celtic, Viking and Irish, was in fact "one of the most diverse nations on earth".

"The explanation is simple. We are a people on the edge of beyond; on the end of a massive continent. Peoples were migrating northwest; and they couldn't get any further. We have collected them."....

I seem to recall seeing an SC post about soldiers brought from the far east of the Roman empire to man Hadrian’s Wall who ended up settling there. Can’t remember the name. The letter S keeps floating into my consciousness.

Well regardless of the DNA, just remember that if it’s not Scottish - it’s crap.

The Anglos were ~so~ superior that they needed the Scots to fight for them.

muir_redwoods, this topic started with your disparagement of the morals of our Scottish great-great-great-grandmothers. I responded regarding the women, the morals and the customs of that time -- women were very, very restricted and all punishment for sexual errors fell on them and "ruined" them.

You then quite predictably dug up a citation about contemporary women, which my earlier post noted are post-feminist, post-liberation, post-birth control women. There is simply no comparison. As women have become more equal to men in society, their behavior has started to be more equal as well: women now have almost as many heart attacks as men, they drink as much as men, many earn as much or more, there are now more women in college than men, and finally, women screw around as much as men these days.

But I repeat: we were talking about our great-great-great-grandmothers. That was an entirely different story. History did not start yesterday. At one time, marriage truly was the gold standard for American women and men as well -- around 92% of Americans were married in times before WWII; and divorce was rare. It was that way in Christian Scotland, as well.

There is as yet no citation you have offered regarding sexual infidelity rates by gender over time. Until you do, you are conjecturing. I am a good student of history and literature. Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales and Shakespeare’s “Merry Wives of Windsor” to name just two sources give a good account of morals across quite a span of history.

Humans have always been imperfect and both sexes have always cheated. I suspect that rates have varied over time and perhaps rates for men have been slightly higher but not much

It is well known that the moral pressures for faithfulness are inversely related to property ownership; if there is something to inherit, the child had better be legitimate. The feudal system of Europe made sure that the bulk of the population had nothing to inherit. Legitimacy had far less significance among the lower classes than it did among the very few nobles.

Cite something, I’ll be happy to read it.

The explanation for Haggis is that it tastes good. I eat it regularly (and in fact plan to make if for supper this evening!)

We have a friend who is a sheep farmer so we can get all of the lamb innards we want.

LOL!!

Here's an oldie but goodie:

An Englishman is being shown around a Scottish hospital. At the end of the tour he is shown into a ward with a number of patients who show no signs of injury.

He goes to examine the first man he sees, and the man proclaims,
"Fair fa' yer honest sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the puddin' race!"

The Englishman, somewhat taken aback, goes to the next patient, who immediately launches into:
"Some hae meat, and canna eat, and some wad eat that want it,
But we hae meat and we can eat, and sae the Lord be thankit."

The next patient sits up and declaims:
"Wee sleekit cow'rin tim'rous beastie,
O what a panic's in thy breastie!
Thou need na start awa sae hasty, wi' bickering bl'attle.
I wad be laith to run and chase thee, wi' murdering prattle."

"Well" says the Englishman to his Scottish colleague "I see you saved the psychiatric ward for the last".

"No, no" the Scottish doctor corrects him. "This is the Serious Burns Unit"

“Unfortunately we have have equivalent areas that function
same way: Florida, Texas, California

All the nuts go there and not being able to move any farther
are stuck......”

You may want to rethink the 3 state thing. The correct thinking is that our entire nation is a bunch of nuts that didn't fit in over in old Europe.
