Clues to Lost Prehistoric Code Discovered in Mesopotamia

Researchers studying clay balls from Mesopotamia have discovered clues to a lost code that was used for record-keeping about 200 years before writing was invented.
The clay balls may represent the world's "very first data storage system," at least the first that scientists know of, said Christopher Woods, a professor at the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute, in a lecture at Toronto's Royal Ontario Museum, where he presented initial findings.

I don’t know why this is news. We have known for years that the Sumerians used clay balls containing tokens to keep track of business records, before they figured out it was easier to draw pictures of the tokens on a piece of clay; that is how writing was invented.
Look at how many "experts" have looked at the shroud of Turin...and still no one is sure....and it's an absolute certainty that no one can EVER prove it was Jesus'. That's a real money maker.
Clay Balls? Maybe an early version of Enigma. That used discs instead of balls, so maybe these were from a primitive IBM Selectric.

I read a lot of achaeology news and such and it never ceases to amaze me how "they just need more money or...all is lost", "eventhough there is no money to be had, without more, this critical dig will shutdown.

They could shell out the cash or use credit to buy the tools and pay for tests, maybe get their buddies at the lab that are also in the "without more funding..." drama to conduct tests for free.

You summed it up pretty well. I can think of similar examples like environmental projects that never end and which always ask for more donations. Funny how their facilities, staffs and parking lots grow ever bigger over time.
Also, makes you wonder what good their efforts are doing when, after decades of spending money, they are still using alarmist tactics to try to squeeze money out of the public to fund their “clean up” efforts. Why is it that things are worse after years of “working” on the problem?
