Roman Silver Hoard Discovered in Scotland

Researchers led by Gordon Noble of the University of Aberdeen returned to a farmer’s field in northeastern Scotland where a hand pin, chain, and spiral bangle all made of silver in the fourth or fifth centuries A.D. had been found more than 170 years ago. According to a report in Live Science, on the second day of the investigation, the team, which had the assistance of metal detectorists, found three Roman silver coins, a silver strap end, a piece of a silver bracelet, and pieces of hack silver. Over a period of 18 months, they gathered a total of 100 artifacts, now known as the Gaulcross Hoard. The pieces are thought to have been high-status objects imported from the Roman world. The research team suggests that the items in the hoard had been collect by non-Romans, such as the Picts, through looting, trade, bribes, or as military pay. Noble adds that the chunks of silver may even have served as currency.

(I COULD BE MISTAKEN but)
didn’t the Scots manage to keep the Romans OUT?

[snip] “Several of my friends call me The Magnet.” Metal detectorist Alistair McPherson has a nose for finding treasure. “I seem to have a third sense when it comes to fields”, he said. [/snip]

Wow, a third sense! That would come in handy. ;’)

You surely didn’t think the Scots kicked them out without first keeping the Roman money? These are Scots, after all.

The Romans never bothered to finish up in Caledonia (Roman-era Scotland was Scot-Free) because there was nothing of much value, the climate may not have been to their liking, and there were bigger priorities on the continent. There are various anachronistic modern nationalist myths about resistance to the Romans, generally found in lands that have had two or three new owners since Rome was a going concern in those areas.

[bank manager] so, Miss, you say you're a Pict?
Yes, and I'd like to deposit my savings.
[bank manager] My goodness, all this silver? Did you hoard this all yourself?
No, my sister hoard half of it.

Mr McPherson said: "I've spent a year in this field. I've had 10-hour searches and I'm quite positive there's just nothing left to find."

A "third" sense huh?

Too bad he couldn't double the number of senses. He probably would have been there just for a weekend.

Boadicea. 6 foot tall red haired woman warrior with a nasty disposition. Freaked out the Roman Army. She played a large part on her time.

Aberdeen is north of the Antonine Wall.

The Romans sometimes campaigned further north in Scotland but did not manage to conquer that area. It sounds like this loot is from later.

I've been to Aberdeen, SD, but not to Aberdeen, Scotland. Forced to choose I think I would prefer to live in the Scottish city.

Aberdeen is a lovely stone built city. Sitting pretty on the wealth of the oil industry.
To far North for my liking, especially in Winter.

I’ve heard of the Mongol hordes. First I’ve heard of the Roman hoards.
