Thanks. In the case of Charles Krauthammer, though, I recommend linking to the townhall.com version of his columns so as to deny the WP the hits. Ruck 'em!

Wow!

These people own a lot, don't they?

By "excerpt" from a broadcast source, are you referring to an article posted on a broadcast website?

You're not saying a "news alert" from off the air is forbidden, are you? (Incidentally, once it's 'on air' isn't it 'the people's' airwaves?)

EG: If they broadcast, "Breaking News, John Kerry Found with Head up Keester" then we can post to breaking news "John F (n) Kerry Found with....etc?

It's always seemed a little strange to me that any organization in the news business wants to cut down on the number of their readers.

If you add the word "conservative" before "readers" their motive becomes quited clear.

I don't rtead these publications myself. They're almost always pretty boring.

A question and a comment:

Am I correct when I assume that at least some of the "excerpt only" sites are automatically flagged by our servers and others are not?

A reminder to forum members that these "short excerpts" may be composed of any part of the article content. Many forum members simply excerpt the first paragraph or two, losing much of the meaning of the article when they could instead selectively excerpt passages that contain the essential information.

Thanks for the reminder and the "updated" database.

That wouldn't be breaking news, it's a fact. But, you're correct otherwise. ;)

Question: Are you good folks going to have to go through the archives and remove/edit all other posts containing articles from these companies?

If yes, I have a lot of copy and pasting to do. I can't tell you how many times I've taken apart a lefty using a FR search.

Yes, I don't know the coding limitations though.

Shouldn't you add the Independent to the newspaper list?

If they broadcast ...

I would find it from a different site then. Just type in the keywords on news.google.com and pull it from a friendly site.

It may be high time for an "auto-excerpt" feature, unfortunately.

It's listed at the top, directly under the links. They asked us after the original thread was posted.

I wasn't very clear. I meant that when someone posts an exerpt from a Krauthammer column, he or she should put the link to the non-WP source in the "URL" block on the posting page. Example:
Source: townhall.com (not Washington Post)

Source URL: http://www.townhall.com/blahblahblah (not the Washington Post URL)

That way townhall.com gets the hits on their website, not the WP.

Yes, thanks! I realize I can post them that way.

I also understand the desire to keep a record here because so many news sources archive but I note the list of objecting sites is getting longer and will probably continue to grow.

Guess, I'll just play it safe.

I agree, I'd rather see townhall get hits that WP. It's all up to how you want to do it.

Is it correct, that when we see an article which may be in another newspaper, which is not on the above list, but it's a copy of say a Washington Post article, we need to excerpt that too -- basically anything which references any of the companies listed above?

E.g. Charles Krauthammer articles appear in townhall.com, but it mentions it's from the WP, then we need to excerpt it, right, because it shows at the bottom of the article, that it's copywrited by the WP.

Yeah, but it's still better to excerpt from Townhall than WP, so that we don't have to log in when chasing the link.

Also, I've noticed on a few occasions that if a WP article is posted from the "Printer ready" version at the WP site, their anti-FR filter doesn't seem to catch the redirect, and you don't have to log in.

Instead of having the users bookmark this, perhaps you could link it as a reference from the FR homepage. That way the new users could know this information too.
