Received another letter from Gannett Publications, publisher of USAToday, and several other newspapers. Due to contractual arrangements they have with third-party content providers, they have denied our request to allow posting of excerpts. They will only allow the posting of titles and links.

Please do not post full text or even excerpts from the following Gannett Web sites:

Thanks, Jim, this will also help us know what pubs not to buy, read, advertise in or even browse online.

And where are the libs whining about monopoly in the media? It's scary how much content Gannett provides.

Or better yet.. just use the little "email this article to a friend" link that most of these sites have

Your on to something. How about an e-mail bot that auto posts articles that have been forwarded to it!

This is even worse. This is only allowing links. It is strange.

Doesn't fair use allow for excerpts?

I feel for the moderators, as they are going to be working full time making sure nothing gets posted from the growing number of sites.

I can understand why Gannett wouldn't want their stuff posted. They are not into debate. They are into unfettered distribution of their opinion only. They are worried that they will be rendered redundant or even (gasp)irrelevent.

Thanks for the info Jim.

In the future, be sure to throw out the USA Today after you read it, to prevent any sort of copyright or fair use violations.

Due to contractual arrangements they have with third-party content providers, they have denied our request to allow posting of excerpts.

So Gannett is blaming a third party? Such as AP, Reuters, and the like? OK and what if I quote from the article from one of these providers that I located on Lexis Nexis? Is that out of bounds too? It would seem that ideological not economic consideration went into the notification you received.

This is getting crazy... is there any (reasonable) way to get a pre-emptive court order to allow for fair-use excerpting? Especially if it can be shown that they're not enforcing the same restrictions against other sites...

Maybe we should all call any of these local papers and tell them we are either canceling our subscription or boycotting their advertisers if they don't allow posting of an excerpt. I KNOW that would wake up some local business people who advertise with these pukes.

Bears repeating.

Either some eccentric billionaire endows FR to take this clear to the Supreme Court or it will become an emasculated shadow of its old self.

Anybody know Richard Mellon Scaife well enough to ask him...

I wonder if FREEPERS WITH TIME could form a task force and investigate this issue.

It's certainly an important issue.

I emailed a large Midwest newspaper about a particular Left-wing website which posts full-text articles from their rag. I pointed out that their copyright policy (which of course they have fully enforced against us) forbade such activity, and provided 3 specific links from within the last month.

Excellent. These people should all be called on the carpet till they either wake up or enforce it equally.

Am beginning to agree.

I wonder if someone could come up with a list of advertisers who are particularly clustered with our list of forbiddens.

I actually rarely read a newspaper any more. FR is far better.

Good idea.

... is there any facility on this site that automatically scans the publication title to make sure the rules are being followed?

I do suspect there've been a lot of messages and anguish about how to cut FR down to nothing on the part of the KOMMIE GLOBALIST TYRANT IDIOTS.

[ ... the new York Times reports "Pentagon sources are plannning Bosnian troop reductions starting in early June..." ]

I think that would not be allowed under their new restrictions, because you have a direct quote there. You would have to paraphrase it:

The NYT reports that some sources in the Pentagon say there will be a decrease in the number of troops in Bosnia in the {»žnning of June.
