The situation in New Orleans continues to deteriorate due to rising water levels and desperation. Search and rescue continues via boat and air. Authorities have announced the goal to evacuate all the remaining residents of NOLA. The New Orleans Mayor has reported numerous gas leaks throughout the city. Sporadic fires occurring. Attempts to evacuate hundreds of hospital patients from Charity Hospital and Tulane Medical Center are in process. Patients are being transported to other hospitals as far away as Florida.

The Army Corps of Engineers is at the NOLA levee breaks with current plans to drop 3000 lb sand bags in an effort to stop the flow of water. NOLA hospital evacuations continue for thousands of patients. Reports indicate all evacuees are being taken to the SuperDome, which is now surrounded by water. The generators at the Dome are now in jeopardy. The Governor of Louisiana has called for a day of prayer tomorrow...

Elsewhere, search and rescue continue in Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi reports indicate catastrophic damage.

I posted that before, several hours ago, downthread.

WWL said that well before noon, the military was starting to airdrop supplies in to highways, the SuperDome, clusters of survivors, etc., etc.

Bush can't do any good in LA. His place is in DC, and he's there.

Bush didn't do any good at Ground Zero, either, except to rally the responders and show the nation he would lead us through the crisis. I'm sure he'll go down there sometime the next few days, but I think he made a mistake by just flying over in Air Force One.

Most of the people shot as looters following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire were not looters. Estimates are that about 2/3 of the victims weren't looters, and 1/3 were.

Shooting looters, just for being looters, would be a particularly dumb thing to do in this situation. Lots of people are scavenging things just to survive. Hospital staff have to scavenge for diesel to run emergency generators.

Sure there are lots of real looters - possibly more than half of the purported looters are the real thing.

But ALL of the property being looted is a write-off anyway. New Orleans is GONE. It will be months before residents are allowed to return. At most some of the new structures in less flooded areas can be salvaged.

Criminal violence against people merits action. But not theft of abandoned property, and whatever can't be personally carried out of the flooded areas is or will be abandoned property, and in particular isn't worth taking action about while more important things like saving lives can be done.

NOt to mention that most of the abandoned property still above water will soon be destroyed by flooding or rain, rot & mildew over the next few months.

Exit 235 Eastbound on the Freeway. There are hundreds of people with no water for two and a half days. No water and no shelter. Small babies. This is critical! THIS IS LIFE THREATENING! MOVE NOW!

From that link (http://neworleans.metblogs.com/):
Inspiring....

....to see our nation's chief executive cutting his vacation short to fly to New Orleans, land in Air Force One and stroll to a waiting helicopter WHILE CARRYING HIS DOG.

...while, on the split screen, we're seeing literally dozens of stranded folks waving from apartment windows near Napoleon and S. Claiborne, including one family on the roof with a handmade sign that says, "Help Us."

Put the animal down, my man -- you got work to do. Doesn't he have someone hired to handle this kinda thing? But I won't get political -- we'll hear what he has to say later in the afternoon.

Mayor Nagin says "hundreds, maybe thousands" are dead. While water flow seems to have stabilized a bit, the flow still hasn't been cut off. And the chief of Acadian Ambulance goes on CNN to plead for federal troops to deal with the looters and other scum who have turned Hot New Orleans nights into the New Mogadishu.

Help is beginning to flow in. I'm just hoping it's fast enough.

Ahh. The press is picking the pictures that make the President look bad and the local blog focuses on that. They'd be better off to focus on their local officials who for the most part have dropped the ball or at the very least do not inspire confidence.

These were people who arrived after the Dome was closed and after the storm arrived.

Gives a new perspective to Noah & the Ark. BTW,why is there a moat around a sports arena? Those poor people!

That is amazing.

Do you have any pictures yet of how New Orleans and the other areas have changed since the storm?

Posse comitatus is already decided, the "Incident Of National Significance" trumps it ...

That's all pomp and circumstance, FWIW. Federal force is always available, with the extent of reaction being based on extent of need, with no violation of Posse comitatus. Go through the right formal motions, and US military can be on any street, with the only limitation being logistics.

If the experts from LSU on CNN is right, it would mean there are tens of thousands dead in New Orleans.

Is that the exit that shep is at??

If it is, at the end of the segment Shep said that someone had informed people where to go for assistance.

It looks like some just are not capable to going any further however.
